‎COLOR PRINTING 18TH CENTURY. FLORIAN JEAN PIERRE CLARIS DE‎

‎GALATE ROMAN PASTORAL; IMIT DE CERVANTES . . . DITION ORNE DE FIGURES EN COULEURS D'APRS LES DESSINS DE M. MONSIAU‎

‎Paris: Defer de Maisonneuve 1793. First Edition with these Illustrations. 333 x 247 mm. 13 x 9 3/4". 125 pp. First Edition with these Illustrations. Pleasing contemporary black half roan over black paper boards smooth spine gilt in panels with vase or patera centerpiece. Original somewhat worn but solid board slipcase. FOUR FINE STIPPLE-ENGRAVED PLATES by Colibert and Cazenave after Monsiau PRINTED IN COLORS original tissue guards. Front pastedown with ex-libris of Jean Furstenberg. Cohen-de Ricci 400; Furstenberg 122; Lewine p. 188; Maggs 1930 Catalogue of French Illustrated Books 84; Ray p. 145. Corners a little bumped a few hardly noticeable blemishes on covers but the binding not just solid but with only trivial wear. A breath of foxing here and there but extremely fresh and clean internally with vast margins. AN EXTREMELY FINE CONTEMPORARY COPY. This edition of Florian's pastoral romance in imitation of Cervantes is one of the grander French books to be printed in colors when the vogue for such productions took hold during the last years of the 18th century. Ours is one of six such books all printed after 1786 that Ray singles out for praise as "handsome and imposing volumes." A noted painter of both classical and modern subjects Monsiau 1754-1837 was also an illustrator whose "abundant and interesting work in this line" is underrated even though it has the merits of being simple natural lively and piquant. Ray Monsiau's obscurity says Ray may be owing to the fact that he most often worked as a secondary collaborator on major illustrated works; the present book is one of the few he did on his own and it is among his best. Publisher Defer de Maisonneuve did not develop the technique of stipple engraving on copper plates but he did perfect the process which allowed for gradual tonal changes in hues and intensities of color rather than the "stained glass" effect of separately printed patches of color. The Maggs catalogue states that this work is very rarely found in a full binding "as it appeared at a troubled time when purchasers refrained from having books bound expensively. Normally copies are found in boards or at the best in half-bindings." Our copy has the engraver's name just visible beneath the plates so perhaps it does not qualify as "avant la lettre" but it is obviously printed on thick luxury paper and with extremely ample margins. The volume comes from the renowned library of Jean or Hans Furstenberg who wrote several books on 18th-century French book illustration. Defer de Maisonneuve unknown‎

‎GENESIS PRINTED IN COLORS. SHOWING THE ORIGINAL SOURCES FROM WHICH IT IS SUPPOSED TO HAVE BEEN COMPILED‎

‎Hartford Conn: Belknap & Warfield 1892. FIRST EDITION. 248 x 168 mm. 9 3/4 x 6 1/2". xv 1 59 pp. FIRST EDITION. Publisher's brown cloth covers with blind-stamped borders gilt titling smooth spine. Text printed in black blue green orange yellow brown and red. Extremities lightly rubbed two small stains to lower cover a touch of browning to edges of leaves isolated faint foxing but a fine copy clean and fresh internally with colors undimmed by time in a well-preserved binding. This curious volume represents an effort by Congregational minister and biblical scholar Edwin Bissell 1832-94 to make the multiple sources of the Book of Genesis clear to readers at a glance. In the introduction he explains the various documents from which the text was compiled and assigns them colors. For example the two sources that used the name "Jehovah" for God are in black and orange while the one that used the name "Elohim" is in red. Chapter 14 of Genesis which appears in only one source is in yellow editorial additions are in green and materials from the laws of Moses known as the Priests' Code are in blue. The text of the volume is limited to Genesis due to cost considerations; color printing was not a cheap undertaking at this time. Belknap & Warfield unknown‎

‎IDES D'UN MILITAIRE POUR LA DISPOSITION DES TROUPES CONFIES AUX JEUNES OFFICIERS DANS LA DFENSE ET L'ATTAQUE DES PETITS POSTES‎

‎Paris: Franois Ambroise Didot l'ain 1783. FIRST EDITION. 315 x 235 mm. 12 3/8 x 9 1/8". 5 p.l. including half title 116 60 pp. 14 leaves. FIRST EDITION. Original publisher's paper boards flat spine edges untrimmed. Printer's device on title page color lithograph headpiece with the crest of the Duc du Chatelet preceding the dedication and 11 FOLDING COLOR LITHOGRAPH PLATES BY LOUIS MARIN BONNET. Brunet II 1354; Graesse II 620. Half-inch chip to head of spine paper boards somewhat faded and abraded as expected corners bumped but the insubstantial temporary binding still very sound and pleasing as an unlikely survival. Occasional short marginal tears paper flaws tiny rust spots or other trivial defects but A REALLY FINE COPY INTERNALLY clean crisp and rather bright with generous margins and the plates very fresh their colors undimmed by time. A work of great significance in the history of color printing "Ideas of a Military Officer for the Disposition of Troops Entrusted to Young Officers in the Defense and Attack on Small Posts" is the only book illustrated by Louis-Marin Bonnet using an important pastel method of engraving or "gravure en manire de pastel." The process was developed by Bonnet's teacher J. C. Franois in 1757; Bonnet 1736-93 improved the technique to add more tones and colors so that prints resembled a drawing done using pastel chalks. The prints produced were of a higher quality and the method was particularly useful in the present work facilitating the interpretation of the military plans and movements depicted in the text. Foss was a military engineer and an instructor at the training school for French infantry officers. The first part of this treatise discusses strategy and tactics for use in attacking or defending small military outposts i.e. those manned by 30-300 men while the second part offers detailed instructions on drawing colored field maps illustrated by Bonnet's fine plates. Internally our untrimmed copy looks very much as it did when originally issued and the plates are particularly bright with no wear to the folds. Franois Ambroise Didot l'ain unknown‎

‎Nouvelles Heures et Prieres. Composées dans le Style des Manuscrits du XIVe. au XVI Siecle.‎

‎Paris: Gruel et Engelmann n.d. originally published in 1870 but this is a later issue Godefroy Engelmann 1788-1839 was a Franco-German lithographer and chromolithographer. He trained in Switzerland and France at La Rochelle and Bordeaux and he studied painting and sketching in Jean-Baptiste Regnault's atelier in Paris. He is largely credited with bringing chromolithography to France and later of commercializing it. After his dealth his son Godefroy Englemann II 1819-1897 carried on his father's work and continued to produce chromolithographic books of very high quality. The present work was first published in 1870 and continued to be issued at least through the 1890s with the same sheets. Full dark blue crushed morocco by Gruel. Covers paneled in blind gilt inner dentelles dark blue silk endleaves elaborately gauffered edges. Octavo. The first leaf features a chromolithographic monogram in blue black and gilt with the date "19 Janvier 1918." Chromolithographic title-page with gilt decoration within an architectural border each page within a chromolithographic border in gold and various colors four full-page illustrations printed in gold and sepia. The last four pages are reserved for "Souvenirs de famille" and are bordered and ruled in gilt. Sepia and gil printer's device on the final leaf. A fine clean copy. In the 1840s the French bookbinding firm Gruel was commissioned by printers Engelmann and Graf to provide a range of covers for facsimiles of illuminated manuscripts. The bindings were to be in different styles and at varying price levels. Prideaux notes in Bookbinders and their Craft that Gruel "always had the highest reputation . . . for initiative in artistic matters as well as for irreproachable execution in the detail of its many-sided achievements. ‎PICTURES AND SONGS FOR THE LITTLE ONES AT HOME‎

‎COLOR PRINTING PICTURES AND SONGS FOR THE LITTLE ONES AT HOME. London: Thomas Nelson and Sons 1865. 8vo. Publisher's cloth. 16 leaves printed on one side only with 15 color plates. First edition. This is a very nice example of color printing by Thomas Nelson who used a transfer lithography method very similar to Baxter's color printing technique In it Nelson transferred the images from steel engravings as opposed to Baxte taking his images from wood blocks. Then Nelson used oil based colors to pri the image as did Baxter producing very bright and vivid colors. The color images in this book are quite small 1 1/2 x 1 3/4 inches and are pasted on pages all printed in brown ink with gold borders and vignettes that surround the color plates. Some sporadic foxing and slight cover discoloration but a good example of a seldom seen Victorian method of color printing. unknown‎

‎COLOR PRINTING EARLY. COSTUMES. LE VACHER DE CHARNOIS JEAN CHARLES‎

‎RECHERCHES SUR LES COSTUMES ET SUR LES THATRES DE TOUTES LES NATIONS TANT ANCIENNES QUE MODERNES‎

‎Paris: Drouhin 1790. FIRST EDITION. 265 x 205 mm. 10 3/8 x 8". Two volumes. FIRST EDITION. VERY ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY MARBLED CALF GILT IN A NEOCLASSICAL DESIGN covers with a cresting palmette frame featuring ornate urn ornaments at corners flat spine divided into compartments by Greek key roll floral spray centerpieces one green and one black label marbled endpapers. With 55 PLATES OF COSTUMES designed by Philippe Chry and engraved by Pierre-Michel Alix 50 of these PRINTED IN COLOR five in black and white a couple of these with color highlights applied by hand and with a color portrait of the author from the 1802 edition tipped in at front. Colas 717; Hiler p. 542; Lipperheide 3203; Cohen-de Ricci 227; Brunet IV 1135. One corner worn to board joints and extremities lightly rubbed but the bindings lustrous and generally very attractive. First volume slightly browned throughout second volume occasionally so volume II with two-inch marginal stain to upper gutter affecting four quires and six plates but not touching text or images two plates with pen marks in margins touching lettering but not image other trivial defects but still an excellent copy internally the colors especially clear and pleasing This is an elegant production with the Neoclassical binding being the perfect complement to the color engravings of ancient Greek and Roman costumes that illustrate the present history of theatrical attire. In the two volumes here theater critic and historian Jean Charles Le Vacher de Charnois 1749-92 covers Classical tragedies and comedies as well as later interpretations of these dramas by playwrights including Racine. Le Vacher de Charnois intended a series of books encompassing as the title indicates theatrical costumes from all nations and from the ancient to the modern; however the French Revolution interrupted his scheme and as a monarchist he was imprisoned in 1792 for his writings in support of the aristocracy. It was long thought that he had died in the massacres at the Abbaye prison in September of that year but later research indicates that he may have been executed during the Reign of Terror in 1794. The artists who illustrated this work were at the opposite end of the politcal spectrum. Painter Philippe Chry 1759-1838 studied with Jacques-Louis David and adopted his master's passionate support for the Revolution as well as his Neoclassical style. Engraver Pierre-Michel Alix 1762-1817 was a specialist in color printing best known for his portraits of leaders of the French Revolution and later of Napoleon and First Empire dignitaries. While the handsome binding here is unsigned the palmette roll on the covers is very similar but not identical to one used by Bozerian see Culot "Jean-Claude Bozerian" roll #44 and plate #XXIV. Perhaps our binder had trained in that atelier as the design and workmanship are certainly of that level. Drouhin unknown‎

‎Washington: Government Printing Office 1871. 4to. 290 x 230 mm. 11 1/2 x 9 inches. 4 205 pp. Illustrated with 7 chromolithographic plates 6 micro photographs and one lithograph. Bound in contemporary pebbled morocco spine and tips over marbled paper boards; edges rubbed but a sound and attractive copy. First illustrated edition; the text was published in an abbreviated form in 1869. This report was initiated by an outbreak of disease in a large number of Texas cattle that had been shipped north and landed in Cairo Illinois. The disease quickly spread and a government response was requested through the House of Representatives. A team lead by the English Professor of Veterinary Medicine James Gamgee and the botanists H. W. Ravenel of South Carolina traveled to Texas to find the origins of the diseased live stock. In an attempt to better illustrate their findings of the impact of the disease on the lungs spleens hearts and kidneys they employed the latest technology of chromolithographic printing and micro photography to produce highly legible detailed images of damaged organs.
