The program starts with a short bio here is an excerpt: The Black Eastsiders between the turn of the 20th Century and the sixties were the residents of a crescent shaped areas that had it's northernmost tip in Boyle Heights. It went southbound through downtown Los Angeles along Central Avenue generally with it's southern tip in Watts. It's eastern and western boundaries were Alameda and Main streets roughly. We inhabited the Eastside until covenants in land sale contracts prohibiting purchase by Blacks were outlawed by the United States Supreme Court. While we were legally segregated on the Eastside our institution and businesses developed. They even flourished. After we gained the right to purchase housing wherever we chose we moved away and the significance of that crescent shaped land mass diminished. One thoughtful eastsider looking back in time remarked "we got what we wanted but we lost what we had." . in hte heyday of the Eastside the institutions that bound us so close together were in place and working. We attended school and earned our grades. We submitted to the authority of our elders. If we were wrong we accepted punishment corporal or otherwise. We attended church and Scout meetings. We played in the playgrounds and walked the streets tat were free from violence. We felt safe and secure. We listened to and accepted the chastisement of our parents and neighbors. We were reaised in a climate of love and mutual respect. We were bonded together so closely that we became an extended family.
