‎Giambattista war der Sohn und Schüler des venezianischen Malers Fabio Canal (1701-1767), der seinerseits Schüler und lange Zeit Mitarbeiter G.B. Tiepolos war (1696-1770). Giambattista war von 1768-1780 Mitglied der venezianischen Malergilde. Er arbeitete als Freskenmaler in Venedig, der Terra ferma, sowie in Triest und Ferrara. Er soll siebzig Kirchendecken ausgemalt haben, so z.B. eine ?Glorie der Titelheiligen? in der Kirche San Eufemia von 1763, eine ?Heimsuchung? von 1771 in SS Apostoli, eine ?Geburt Marias? im Dom von Sevalle u.a. Die Karrieren von Vater und Sohn ziehen sich durch das gesamte 18. bis in das erste Viertel des 19. Jahrhunderts. Beide waren ausgezeichnete Maler, das zeichnerische Werk ist klein und noch nicht ausführlich bearbeitet. Es sind ca. zwei Dutzend Zeichnungen bekannt, von denen drei den Namen des Vaters tragen. Es gibt nur eine einzige Arbeit, die mit Sicherheit dem Giambattista zugeschrieben werden kann (vgl. L. Padoan Urban, Giambattista Canal, in: Atti dell? istituto veneto, CXXVIII, 1969-70, Ss. 41-43). Die Komposition hat einen ausgesprochen erzählerischen Charakter. Sie schildert den Moment, in dem Elieser Rebekka als Dank für ausreichend Wasser aus dem Brunnen für sein Gefolge und die Kamele eine Kette und zwei Armreifen aus schwerem Gold überreicht. Die Darstellung wirkt charmant und elegant, sie erhält durch die Kamele und Schafe, die von rechts kommend in das Geschehen hereinlaufen und nicht zuletzt durch die kokette Haltung der Rebekka, eine amüsante Note. Der neoklassizistische Ansatz dieser Zeichnung kann mit den Freskendekorationen im Palazzo Filodrammatico von 1804 in Treviso verglichen werden.‎

‎Zuerst war Chabry Schüler von J.P. Alaux (1783-1858) und L. Drouyn (1816-1896) in Bordeaux, dann drei Jahre von C. Troyon (1810-1865) in Paris. Darauf ließ er sich für einige Zeit in Barbizon nieder und erfuhr hier im Kreise von J.F. Millet (1814-1875), Th. Rousseau (1812-1867) und V.N. Diaz de la Pena (1807-1876) schnelle Förderung. Nach kürzerem Aufenthalt in Brügge lebte er sieben Jahre in Brüssel, wo er es bald zu Ruf und Ansehen als Künstler und Lehrer brachte. Um 1863 kehrte er in seine Heimat zurück und stellte 1865 zum ersten Mal im Pariser Salon aus, wo er nun bis zu seinem Tode fast alljährlich mit einigen Arbeiten vertreten war. Ein Charakteristikum seiner Malerei sind kühle, graue Farbharmonien, die seine Bilder seit dem Aufenthalt in Belgien bestimmen.‎

‎Die Malerin und Zeichnerin Marianne Chodowiecka war eine Nichte von D.N. Chodowiecki (1726-1801), dessen Töchter Susanne Chodowiecka (1763-1819), Jeanette (1761-1835) und Henriette (1770-1880) ebenfalls künstlerisch tätig waren. Jeanette, die seit 1783 mit Jacques Papin verheiratet war und mit diesem seit 1793/94 in Potsdam lebte, war ihre Mutter. Marianne schuf Porträts, Genre und Interieurs und war 1815-1829 in Potsdam und Leipzig tätig. Bekannt ist von ihrer Hand beispielsweise ein Porträt des bekannten, in Berlin tätigen Musikers, Komponisten und Dirigenten Carl Friedrich Zelter (1758-1832). Zudem fertigte sie Kopien nach ihrem Großvater, dessen Stücke aus dem Nachlaß sie der Berliner Akademie vermachte. Das Gutenberg-Denkmal wurde 1837 in Mainz aufgestellt.‎

‎Sechs Jahre zum Fayencemaler in Marseille ausgebildet, setzte er seine Ausbildung an der Ecole gratuite de dessin und nach 1771 an der Académie de Peinture et de Sculpture in Marseille fort. Schnell erwarb er sich den Ruf eines brillanten angehenden Malers und gewann 1772 eine Silbermedaille und 1773 einen ersten Preis an der Akademie in Marseille. Es folgt die Übersiedlung nach Aix-en-Provence. Mit einem Empfehlungsschreiben an den Maler J.-M. Vien (1716-1809), dem damaligen Direktor der Académie de France, traf er 1777 in Rom ein, wo er mindestens drei Jahre blieb. Wann er nach Frankreich zurückkehrte ist offen und auch, ob er mit P.-H. de Valencienne (1750-1819) zusammentraf, was sein Malstil jedoch vermuten läßt. 1784wirkte er in Aix und leitete seit 1786 die lokale Zeichenschule, die als Folge der Revolution aber 1794 geschlossen wurde. Seine bedeutendsten Schüler waren F.-M. Granet (1775-1849) und A. de Forbin (1777-1841). Nach einer mehrjährigen Lehrtätigkeit in Digne kehrte Constantin 1813 nach Aix zurück und lehrte an der wieder eröffneten Zeichenschule als Professor für Landschaftsmalerei. Obwohl er seit 1817 regelmäßig ausstellte, lebte er bis zu seinem Ende in bedrückender Armut.‎
