Tuschfeder in Schwarz, auf cremefarbenem Japan, rechts unten signiert und datiert ?Herm. R.C. Hirzel Octo. 1903?. 44,8:31,5 cm. - Etwas braunspurig im weißen Rand links.‎

‎Der Apotheker, Maler, Radierer, Grafiker und Zeichner war Schweizer Herkunft. Hirzel besuchte in Genf die Schule und machte hier im Anschluss eine Lehre zum Apotheker. Danach studierte er in Genf und Berlin Chemie und Naturwissenschaften, entschied sich dann aber Ende der 1880er Jahre in Berlin sein Studium abzubrechen und Maler zu werden. Er belegte Kurse an der Kunstakademie Berlin, bildete sich aber auch autodidaktisch weiter und wurde dabei von Karl Hagemeister (1848-1933) beraten, für den er auch ein Exlibris entwarf. Er fand seine Motive in den Naturlandschaften der Mark Brandenburg, unternahm 1890 eine Studienreise nach Sizilien und in die Campagna Romana. Als künstlerisches Ausdrucksmittel wählte er die Radierung, deren Technik er sich selbst angeeignet hatte und erhielt 1893 auf der ?Internationale Kunstausstellung? in Rom für seine dort gezeigte Radierung die Silbermedaille. Im selben Jahr kehrte er nach Berlin zurück und spezialisierte sich hier wieder auf Motive aus der Mark Brandenburg. Wohl aus finanziellen Gründen ging er 1904 nach Russland, um dort als Baumwollverkäufer zu arbeiten, kehrte aber 1910 nach Berlin zurück. In der Folge war er als Gebrauchsgraphiker tätig und schuf Reklameblätter, Notenumschläge, Exlibris und andere Kleinkunst. Dazu gehörte auch Goldschmuck und Emaille-Arbeiten.‎

‎Studium am Bauhaus in Dessau 1928-1930, wo er P. Klee und W. Kandinsky kennenlernte. 1930 richtete das Bauhaus für seine Werke eine eigene Ausstellung ein und ebenfalls 1930 wurde er vom Jenaer Kunstverein für die Ausstellung Junge Künstler am Bauhaus Dessau eingeladen. Mit der nationalistischen Machtübernahme wurde sein Werk als entartet verboten und er floh als Mitglied der KPD in die Schweiz und nach Paris. 1934 arbeitete er bei P. Klee in Bern. Aus familiären Gründen ging er 1939 nach Deutschland zurück, wurde eingezogen und war 1940-1946 als Kriegsgefangener in der Sowjetunion. Danach nahm er seine künstlerische Tätigkeit wieder auf und lebte in Rudolstadt/Thür., Paris und Berlin, seit 1976 in Pompeiana.‎

Etwas fleckig, verso am Oberrand mit teils durchscheinenden Kleberesten. Möglicherweise Abwandlung des mythologischen Themas von Orpheus und Euridike. Der trauernde Orpheus bezauberte nach dem Tod von Euridike, die auf der Flucht vor dem Gott Aristaios auf eine Schlange trat und an ihrem Gift verstarb, mit seinem Gesang und Spiel Tiere, Mensch und Götter.‎

‎Huber verdiente seinen Lebensunterhalt zunächst als Knecht, dann wurde er Soldat. Gönner ermöglichten ihm schließlich ein Kunststudium bei dem Münchner Historienmaler J. Schraudolph (1808-1879). Als Maler hauptsächlich religiöser Themen hatte Huber bald Erfolg. So erwarb Ludwig I. von ihm ein Bild für die Neue Pinakothek. Während Arbeiten zur Ausschmückung des bayerischen Nationalmuseums mit Darstellungen aus der bayerischen Geschichte verstarb Huber im Alter von 38 Jahren.‎

B. No 3.?. 49:60,5 cm. - Papier insgesamt leicht vergilbt, kleinere Randeinrisse sorgfältig restauriert. Die südliche Landschaft verrät in ihrer etwas dilettantischen Zeichenweise die noch nicht sehr geübte Hand des jungen Künstlers. Möglicherweise ist das Blatt nach einer fremden Vorlage und im Zeichenunterricht bei J.A.B. Reges entstanden.‎

‎Der Vater des bekannten Frankfurter Malers Adolf Höffler (1825-1898) besuchte zunächst die Zeichenschule von J.A.B. Reges (1772-1847) in Frankfurt und ging 1817 nach Paris als Schüler von A.J.Gros (1771-1835). Er kehrte 1822 nach Frankfurt zurück, unternahm Studienreisen an den Rhein und in die Schweiz, war in Frankfurt hauptsächlich als Porträtist tätig und widmete sich später fast ausschließlich der von ihm gegründeten Mal- und Zeichenschule.‎
