Carmina... Poesie liriche toscane
In -4°, due parti in un volume, antiporta figurata incisa, due tavole incise a piena pagina di cui una con ritratto dell’autore. Testo corredato da centinaia di vignette, testatine, iniziali e finalini istoriati calcografici; diverse illustrazioni incise (I) legato con “Poesie liriche toscane”, inc. di Giovanni Battista Bonacina, Etienne Picart su disegni di Gregorio Tomasini; legatura in piena pergamena coeva semirigida, fioriture e lievi macchie di umidità e bruniture su alcune carte (in particolare pp. 89-92), segni di restauro su alcune carte. Molto raro, questo libro è uno degli esempi più impressionanti della produzione barocca italiana: sconosciuto ai compilatori della Bibliografia Romana: Boffito nomina il primo frontespizio inciso come registrato da Le Blanc, ma aggiunge che per loro un esemplare sarebbe stato introvabile. Prima edizione delle due opere, rilegate assieme e pubblicate postume, probabilmente è un omaggio a Cesarini stampato in tiratura limitata. L’autore è un cugino di Federico Cesi, studioso di legge e filosofia e appassionato di astronomia e matematica. Amico di Galileo e membro dell’Accademia dei Lincei, sollecitò Galileo a scrivere Il Sggiatore. I versi qui contenuti sono dedicati ciascuno a personaggi illustri dell’epoca (molti di loro membri dell’Accademia). Rossetti 1824 Very rare, this is one of the most impressive examples of Italian baroque book production: It was not known to the compilers of the Bibliografia Romana: Boffito mentions the first engraved title page as registered by Le Blanc, but it adds “We couldn’t find the edition”. First edition of the two works, issued together and posthumously published, with a life of the author included. This was probably a memorial to Cesarini published in a small number of copies. The author was a cousin of Count Federico Cesi and, after studies in law and philosophy, developed a passionate interest in mathematics and astronomy. He was friend of Galileo and Ciampoli and a member of the Accademia dei Lincei. He went on to urge Galileo to write Il Saggiatore. The verses here contained, latin and italian, are each dedicated to a notable contemporary (many of these were members of the Accademia).

I titoli sulla TIPOGRAFIA (che Charton qui definisce "L'histoire complète d'un livre ou plutôt du Magasin Pittoreque lui-même") occupano complessive 15 pagine con 12 INCISIONI (tra cui due a piena pagina: macchina per la fabbricazione della carta, e pressa meccanica) e sono importanti perché questa rivista era uscita solo l'anno prima e costituiva un'innovazione epocale per l'alta tiratura e per la ricchezza delle ILLUSTRAZIONI di tipo XILOGRAFICO, per le quali in Francia ancora mancavano incisori e maestranze: dovette rivolgersi alla tradizione inglese e inaugurò sul continente un tipo di periodico popolare ed economico di alto contenuto educativo consono alla sua formazione sansimoniana, per una società industriale emancipata e fraterna, con buoni testi integrati da belle figure. Sansimoniano era anche il condirettore CAZEAUX. In-4° (cm. 29,2x18,8), pp. (4), 412 con centinaia di ILLUSTRAZIONI (alcune ancora da clichés inglesi). Mezza pelle coeva con fregi oro e tit. su doppio tassello (solido, lievi escoriazioni).

In 4, cm 22 x 32,5, pp. 12. Privo di Brossura all'origine. Rara edizione del discorso tenuto da Francois Rene De Chateaubriand, in veste di ambasciatore di Francia, in occasione del conclave tenutosi alla morte di Leone XII e risposta del Cardinal Castiglioni. Questi fu poi eletto papa nello stesso conclave con il nome di Pio VIII. Il discorso dell Chateubriand e la risposta puntuale del cardinale ebbero una certa risonanza nelle cronache dell'epoca, per il tono e i riferimenti del legato francese. Cosi' infatti viene commentato nelle Effemeridi: '...Direbbesi quasi che il Porporato aveva un secreto presentimento della sua elevazione, e che parlava gia' al Cattolico mondo come successore di Leon XII. E mentre lAmbasciatore esponeva le sue idee al Collegio, e che perdevasi nella rigenerazione attuale, mostrando di volervi strascinare la Chiesa; il Cardinale, elevandosi ad una maggior altezza, cercava in Cielo le promesse divine, onde ricordarle autorevolmente allambasciatore, ed insegnargli che il Cattolicismo e' ben superiore allumana civilta' ed alle mondane rivoluzioni, e che desso puo' ben soffrirne, ma non restarne oppresso giammai...'. Il Visconte di Chateaubriand, scrittore e uomo politico, ebbe una pbreve parentesi romana come Ambasciatore di Carlo X tra l'ottobre 1828 e il maggio 1829. Interessante anche come testimonianza tipografica facendosi riferimento all'utilizzo per la stampa della sterofeidotipia, (sistema simile alla stereotipia ma piu' economico) invenzione di Gaetano Cairo da Codogno, direttore generale delle tipografie pontificie

This is a very good copy of this salesman's sample of the book about to be published, Chatterton's classic Ship-Models. The portfolio has red marbled paper-covered boards and green cloth spine and corners. It contains a four page (folded) prospectus for the book, complete with order form. Also a printed, perhaps typed, list of 43 plates titled "Quaint Ships of Various Nations and Periods". 43 black & white photographic plates of ship models, printed on heavy card stock. Portfolio ties defective. Also laid-in is an early review of the book. 10.5" high X 7" wide. This book will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.

Garden City: Garden City Publishing Co. 1934. First Edition Reprint. Hardcover. Very Good Plus/Very Good. Kent Rockwell. 8vo heavy light brown buckram over boards with front and spine blind stamps. Decorative gilt stamp to front and spine outlining illustrated paste on labels illustrated endpapers. The text block of the book has sagged so there is slight wear to the bottom edge. Out of an abundance of modesty I am grading this book merely VG. Jacket presents well with slight chipping and wear to the spine ends and flap fold edges. There is also minor soiling to the jacket which overall if VG.This gorgeous deluxe reprint edition of the Covici Friede Canterbury Tales is both beautifully bound and illustrated. Don't let the copyright page confuse things - this is published by Garden City. Although not the true first after reviewing online photos of the original I greatly prefer the binding choices for this Garden City edition. This is a really beautiful book and it's hard to convey its aesthetic impact with words and pictures. Garden City Publishing Co. hardcover
