The History of Gorhambury.
First edition, 4to, [2],90pp., lithographed throughout wove paper watermarked "Whatman 1820", inscribed "E. H. Grimston from his affectionate aunt Harriot Grimston Oct 13th 1840", Edward H. Grimston was the second son of the author, and Harriot her sister-in-law, lithographed portrait frontispiece of the author on india-proof paper, title within decorative border, 9 lithographed plates and plans, one etched plate, 11 lithographed armorials in the margins, some light spotting, contemporary half morocco,upper joint split. "Probably the earliest [British] topographical book with its text lithographed... the most striking feature of the book is the discrepancy between the assurance of the writing of the main text and the naivety of the drawings..."?Twyman, Early Lithographed Books, pp. 179-180. Twyman suggests that Charlotte Grimston (wife of the first earl of Verulam who owned Gorhambury) was responsible for the views and plans, but employed a professional lithographic writer for the text. A Manual of Lithography, Clearly Explaining the Whole Art, and the accidents that may happen in Printing, with different methods of avoiding them. To which is added, (now for the first time printed) selections from the work of M. Br?geaut; forming a sequel to the manual, and bringing down the improvements in the art of the present time. Translated from the French, by C. Hullmandel.
Third Edition, corrected, xix,117,[3]pp., 2 fold-out lithographed plates, the first containing twelve figures of tools and implements, the second nine figures of printing presses and parts, both plates are lightly water-marked affecting the image, & with 1" marginal tear to vertical fold of each, final leaf includes publisher's advertisements for two additional titles by Hullmandel; front & back endpapers soiled, with early owner's signature (L. Stilson) & date on front pastedown, final two blank leaves bit stained, half calf with early marbled paper over boards, red leather label (3x2") with gilt border & title, "A Manual of Lithography", & the name "L. Stilson" added to front board; spine worn & rubbed with 1-1/4" piece missing at head & small label with black "C" at foot; 3" split in front joint; corners, edges & joints worn, paper boards chipped, edges of cover label chipped. Hullmandel's best know work and most influential publication is his book 'The art of drawing on stone' which was first published in 1824. But in terms of establishing lithography in Britain, his translation from the French of this treatise by Raucourt de Charleville was probably just as important. This third and final edition contains some important new additions. Colonel Antoine Raucourt was chief engineer at the Ecole des Ponts et Chauss?es in Paris and ran its in-plant lithographic press. His book was originally published in Toulon in 1819. Hullmandel thought highly of Raucourt's treatise and wrote in the preface: "The books which have hitherto been published on lithography are very imperfect, and are much more adapted to persons who already understand the art than those who wish to learn it... I have repeatedly wished for a guide to explain the new accidents which occur every instant, and which... appear each time so new and intricate, that the beginner is consequently tempted to give up all hopes of ever succeeding. I am consequently better enabled to appreciate the value of this excellent treatise on lithography, and hesitate not an instant to pronounce it the best work which has ever been published on the art." RARE 16th-century edition of the "Thesaurus Linguae Sanctae", a Hebrew-Latin dictionary for Catholic ministers, originally composed during the early 16th century by the Dominican Bible scholar St.Pagnini. The dictionary appended a list of nominalization patterns and a list of irregular nouns. This edition was printed by the famous Dutch publisher Christopher Plantin at 1570, during the first years of the religious strife that came to be known as the Eighty Years' War. The book features the publisher's elaborate emblem on the title page, a decorative first capital letter on the first text page, and floral title bars in several places throughout the book. The book ends with a royal privilege from Emperor Maximilian II. 115x165mm. Unpaginated preface and appendix. 380 pages (irregular pagination: [188] + [193-380], but the text is COMPLETE. Rebound in black cloth Hardcover. Gilt lettering on spine. Ex libris and binder's stickers on endpaper. Pen inscriptions (dated 1752) on title page, and outside the text on few other pages. Last text page upper edge slightly torn - NO damage to text. Pages yellowing. [SUMMARY]: This 16th-century old Plantin dictionary is surprisingly preserved in very good condition.

Artistica legatura francese del XVIII secolo in marocchino verde oliva, filetti e bordura stilizzata impressi in oro ai piatti, al centro dei quali venne aggiunta da Ridge e Storr per volontà di J.H. Thorold l'ancora aldina tra 1824 e 1831. Prima edizione aldina, e seconda assoluta, che segue la rarissima originale di Francesco Alopa del 1496, delle opere di Luciano di Samosata (II sec.d.C.), tra i più complessi e raffinati scrittori in lingua greca. Splendida elegante impressione di un testo assai affascinante, il primo impresso da Aldo che presenti la numerazione delle pagine, recto e verso, in alto al centro. L'opera di Luciano termina alla p. 447 ed è seguita dagli scritti di Filostrato e Callistrato in edizioni originali. Bell'esemplare, molto marginoso e genuino, completo e immune dalle censure che spesso si trovano in altri, nei quali l'Indice usava sopprimere il "de morte Peregrini" (p. 386) ed il dialogo "Philopatris" (p. 436), oppure eliminare le pag. 385-392 e 435-440. Bell'esemplare, marginoso e fresco, in raffinata legatura, di illustri provenienze: Syston Park library, Thorold: "The Syston Park library had ben started, about 1785, by Sir J. Thorold... his son, Sir John Hayford Thorold, was truly a great collector. Sarlavla page decorated with traditional ornaments. First edition of this extremely rare and the first translation of the Anabasis of Alexander in the Ottoman / Turkish literature. One of 1010 copies. The Anabasis of Alexander was composed by Arrian of Nicomedia in the second century AD, most probably during the reign of Hadrian. The Anabasis (which survives complete in seven books) is a history of the campaigns of Alexander the Great, specifically his conquest of the Persian Empire between 336 and 323 BC. Both the unusual title "Anabasis" (literally "a journey up-country from the sea") and the work's seven-book structure reflect Arrian's emulation (in structure, style, and content) of the Greek historian Xenophon, whose own Anabasis in seven books concerned the earlier campaign "up-country" of Cyrus the Younger in 401 BC. The Anabasis is by far the fullest surviving account of Alexander's conquest of the Persian Empire. It primarily revolves around the military history, reflecting the content of Arrian's model, Xenophon's Anabasis; the work begins with Alexander's accession to the Macedonian throne in 336 BC and has nothing to say about Alexander's early life (in contrast, say, to Plutarch's Life of Alexander). Nor does Arrian aim to provide a complete history of the Greek-speaking world during Alexander's reign. Arrian's chief sources for his writing of the Anabasis were the lost contemporary histories of the campaign by Ptolemy and Aristobulus and, for his later books, Nearchus. One of Arrian's main aims in writing this work on history seems to have been to correct the standard "Vulgate" narrative of Alexander's reign that was dominant in his own day, primarily associated with the lost writings of the historian Cleitarchus. The Anabasis gives a broadly chronological account of the reign of Alexander the Great of Macedonia (336-323 BC), with a particular focus on military matters. George Rhasis (Yorgaki Razi) translated Anabasis Alexandrou = "History of Alexander the son of Philip" the work of Xenophon under the title "Târîh-i Iskender bin Filipos". This is the first translation of an ancient Greek historian into Turkish. Georgios Rhasis, who was one of the first writers of the French-Turkish dictionary in the early period, was an Ottoman intellectual who worked as an instructor and translator in Ottoman and French languages. He also taught at the Eastern Languages School in Paris and continued her studies in Corfu and Paris. In 1821 he came to be in Istanbul as a famous orientalist. Rhasis left the city and the homeland he lived in to settle in Tsarist Russia due to concerns during the Greek Revolution in 1821. The Bulaq or El-Amiriya Press is the first official and governmental printing press to be established in Egypt, and functions according to industrial printing basis, causing not just a qualitative but also a quantitative and knowledgeable leap in science throughout the Arab region. It's established in 1820 by Muhammad Ali Pasha of Egypt and Sudan (1769-1849) and it was part of Muhammad Ali's inclusive development plans for the modernization of Egypt.
