Nei volumi si raccoglie il pensiero del giurista e filosofo lucano (Brienza, 1748-1799), uno dei padri dell'illuminismo italiano. E 'stato docente di diritto penale presso l'Università Reale di Napoli, è stato giustiziato nella piazza del mercato di Napoli nel 1799 in seguito al fallimento della rivoluzione in città e per tentare di stabilire una repubblica sul modello rivoluzionario francese. Questi scritti sono l'opera più importante del suo autore, fortemente influenzato dalla filosofia di Giambattista Vico, nella loro analisi storica e lo sviluppo della civiltà, ma molto più virulenta del famoso filosofo napoletano, che tende a denunciare le ingiustizie e abuso di potere dispotici, come è avvenuto per secoli in Italia meridionale in generale e in particolare a Napoli. Autore di studî sulla tecnica della stampa nel sec. 16º. Ha molto contribuito al rinnovamento dell'arte tipografica italiana. Il suo Istituto Grafico, fondato nel 1927, ne continuò egregiamente l'opera e la cui sede, divenuta nel dopoguerra di proprietà dell'Unione Grafici, e acquistata da Angelo Rizzoli nel 1950, ospitò l'Istituto Rizzoli per l'insegnamento delle arti grafiche. PANSERI, ingegnere, studioso della metallurgia e autore di manuali su fonderia e metalli. Novara gli ha dedicato una via. Ottimo esemplare.

Una copia eccezionale di grande qualità, rarissima a trovarsi in queste condizioni. Esordio narrativo e opera narrativa più rappresentativa del neorealismo pasoliniano. Il romanzo fu pubblicato da Garzanti per intervento di Attilio Bertolucci e la prima tiratura del 27 aprile 1955, piuttosto limitata (alcuni stimano 1500 esemplari) andò esaurita in quindici giorni. Pasolini e l'editore Livio Garzanti subirono un processo per oscenità, al quale testimoniarono Giuseppe Ungaretti e Carlo Bo, conclusosi con l’assoluzione.
