JOHN NEAL'S COPY, with his lightly-penciled annotations, OF THE FIRST AMERICAN EDITION OF ANY PART OF DANTE'S DIVINE COMEDY. 83 pp. + an engraved portrait frontispiece of Dante by David Claypool Johnston. The translator, Thomas William Parsons (1819-1892), was a leading Boston dentist (!), poet, and intellectual. A contemporary (and acquaintance) of Longfellow, Oliver Wendell Holmes, Emerson, Thoreau, and James Russell Lowell, this is his first published work. Although he was only in his early 20s when he composed this translation, he demonstrates a highly-developed poetic sensibility and the work has considerable literary merit (and doubtless played a role in encouraging Parsons' friend Longfellow to translate the entire Comedy a few decades later). Still, Dante was relatively unknown in America during the early 19th century, and so very few copies of this privately-printed edition were issued. This is AN OUTSTANDING ASSOCIATION COPY, with a presentation inscription from Parsons to JOHN NEAL, ESQ. Neal (1793-1876) was an intellectual who traveled in the same literary circles as Parsons. He is considered the first American author to use slang in his writing, and was an early proponent of women's rights (and a lawyer, boxer, and architect as well). Neal read this book carefully, as attested by several brief, lightly-penciled marginal annotations. Published by William Davis Ticknor (1810-1864), who went on to found Ticknor and Fields. Printed on fine wove paper. Large 8vo. BOUND IN THE ORIGINAL CLOTH-BACKED BOARDS, WITH THE ORIGINAL PAPER SPINE LABEL INTACT. Some wear to extremities of binding, but structurally solid. INTERNALLY FINE AND BRIGHT. Housed in a custom-made cloth folding case. Colomb de Batines I, 269 (not mentioning the frontispiece portrait present here); BAL 15518 (with note that this work is cited without being seen). A truly exceptional copy of an important and extremely rare book.

Konstantinos Mousouros, also known as Kostaki Musurus Pasha, was an Ottoman Greek diplomatic official of the Ottoman Empire who served as ambassador to Greece, Austria, Great Britain, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He was born in 1807 in Constantinople (Istanbul) to a distinguished Phanariote family. His brother, Pavlos Mousouros, also became a diplomat. Mousouros became the first ambassador of the Ottoman Empire to the newly independent Kingdom of Greece in 1840, a position he kept until 1848. In 1847-48 he was a central figure in the events known as Mousourika (??????????), which led to his temporary recall and the breakdown of relations between the two states. On his return to Athens he survived an assassination attempt, leading to his transfer to Vienna. In 1850 he took up the post of Ottoman ambassador to the Great Britain and Ireland, which he kept for 35 consecutive years, until his retirement in 1885. During the same period, he also served as ambassador to the Netherlands (1861-77) and Belgium (1861-75). In 1876-78, he was ex officio a member of the short-lived Senate of the Ottoman Empire. Well educated, in 1883 Mousouros translated Dante's Divine Comedy into ancient Greek. He was married and had a son, Stephanos Mousouros, who later became Prince of Samos. (Wikipedia). He is known as the first translator of Dante's Divine Comedy into modern Greek. Musurus Pasha had an intellectual identity. One of the most important occupations of Musurus Pasha in the last years was the translation of Dante's Divine Comedy from Italian to Greek. Being able to translate a work of Italian classics and masterpieces of western literature should be an indication of Musurus Pasha's performance and intellectual dimension. Due to negative statements about Muhammad and Ali in Dante's work, the book was not allowed to be published within the Ottoman Imperial borders. Dante's Divine Comedy, originally called Comedia, and later christened Divina by Giovanni Boccaccio, is widely considered the most important poem of the Middle Ages and the greatest literary work in the Italian language. It's signed and inscribed by Musurus Pasha with a dedication in French to Monseigneur Auguste Bonetti as "A la grandeur Monseigneur Bonetti, Hommage de veneration, Musurus". Il dialetto veneziano è quello più vicino alla lingua italiana e per questo si adatta meglio ad una trascrizione fedele dell'opera di Dante. Questa l'opinione di Giuseppe Cappelli, che traduce e annota sull'opera del sommo poeta l'intero capolavoro del poeta fiorentino. Libro in discrete condizioni, con strappi sulla brossura, che è ancora quella originale.

Entro custodia editoriale. Appena legg. indebolita le leg. del codice, peraltro stato di conservazione assolutamente perfetto (in stato di nuovo). Pregiata edizione in tiratura limitata di 500 copie e numerata (n. 155). Si tratta della riproduzione del prezioso manoscritto della Biblioteca Estense di Modena.
