Esattamente cento anni fa, nel 1921, gli studi danteschi furono rivoluzionati dal libro di Benedetto Croce La poesia di Dante. Il racconto del viaggio del sommo poeta lungo il Novecento parte da questa soglia ancora oggi significativa. Nel ricostruire le vicende della critica che intorno a Dante si intrecciarono con motivi politici e ideologici, tra posizioni e fronti molteplici, nel secolo scorso, questo libro, composto da tre saggi tra loro connessi, intende ampliare il campo delle celebrazioni e il dibattito fervido fra filologia e critica estetica, analizzando un momento-chiave della cultura italiana. Con Dante e il poema dell’acqua Giampiero Marano aggiunge un nuovo e decisivo tassello a un lungo lavoro di rilettura critica – condotta secondo la fertile quanto inedita prospettiva schiusa dalla philosophia perennis – della storia della letteratura italiana. Questo breve ma denso saggio muove dal presupposto che Dante, in quanto erede dell’antica sapienza mediterranea, sia da annoverare fra i “maestri di verità” di ogni tempo. Del resto, tutta la grande poesia, come quella della Commedia, non essendo riducibile a mera espressione estetica e sentimentale di una soggettività, contiene anche una rivelazione, il dono e la visione di una conoscenza profonda dell’uomo e dell’universo. Le molteplici, metamorfiche configurazioni che il simbolismo dell’acqua viene ad assumere nel poema dantesco vengono qui esplorate con estremo rigore filologico, nulla concedendo a discutibili interpretazioni modernizzanti (di tipo psicanalitico, per esempio). Esse, infatti, tendono a eludere il problema di ricostruire adeguatamente un clima e una temperie spirituale molto lontani dalla nostra mentalità, che sono quelli propri di una civiltà “tradizionale” nel senso guénoniano del termine. Rara prima edizione di questi dialoghi inediti cinquecenteschi; "Sono interlocutori in essi Luigi del Riccio, Antonio Petreo, Michelangelo Buonarroti, Donato Giannotti e Franesco Pricianese. Nel primo dialogo si dimostra, contro l'opinione del Landino, che Dante consumò nell'inferno due giorni naturali, dalla sera del sabato insino alla sera della domenica di Pasqua... Nel secondo si prova che il poeta impiegò quattro giorni nel salire e girare tutto il monte del purgatorio, il primo nel vedere l'antipurgatorio, il secondo nel salire i primi quattro balzi, il terzo nel montare gli altri tre, il quarto nel cercare il paradiso terrestre" (Barbi, "Della fortuna di Dante", p. 145).
