Fine copy. AThe third printing of the first collective edition of Rossetti’s original poems without the translations following those of 1891 and 1893 . The superb binding which is by Zaehnsdorf is signed and dated 1895 suggesting that this copy was supplied by the publisher as sheets and that this is its original dress. It reproduces as far as the outside covers are concerned though on a smaller scale Rossetti’s design for the covers of the 1870 edition of the ‘Poems’ the tooling here being more perfect than the blocking on cloth of the originals however the brasses for that having been cut badly - though to speak more truly it follows more precisely the design of the binding of the two volume Collected Works of 1886 in its original envisagement the lower of the two small panels on the sides having ten horizontal rows of circlets on the front and eleven on the back cover. The tools used on the doublures are based on elements of the end-paper design of the 1870 volume. A beautiful volume and one of only a very small issue so bound. The front binder’s blank has an ink inscription dated “Nov 20 / 1895†giving the latest limiting date for this issue. April 1882 in Birchington-on-Sea, Kent) war ein britischer Dichter und Maler, der in beiden Künsten gleichermaßen begabt war. Er war wegen seiner dominierenden und charismatischen Persönlichkeit die treibende Kraft der Präraffaeliten, die die Reform der britischen Kunst als Ziel hatten. Er hielt wenig von Konventionen und wurde in den letzten Lebensjahren ein exzentrischer Sonderling. ... Rossetti gehörte zu den ungewöhnlichsten Künstlern des 19. Jahrhunderts. Er selbst sah sich als malenden Dichter. Von den anderen Mitstreitern der Präraffaelitischen Bewegung hob er sich durch seine Auffassung und seine Arbeitsmethoden deutlich ab: Er war weder geduldig noch ein Naturtalent. Auch war er nie an der genauen Ausführung von Details interessiert, neigte dazu, komplizierte Hintergründe zu vermeiden und hatte eine Abneigung gegen Landschaften. Daneben fehlte ihm auch eine gründliche technische Schulung. So sind seine ersten Werke (Die Jugendzeit der Jungfrau Maria, Die Verkündigung) zwar anspruchsvoll, legen aber auch seine zeichnerischen und perspektivischen Grenzen offen. Doch lässt die Aussagekraft die technischen Mängel vergessen. Holman Hunt war der Ansicht, dass Rossettis Werke nicht nur gegen die Grundsätze der Präraffaeliten verstießen, sondern dass dieser die Lehren nie ernsthaft angenommen habe. Rossettis Verdienst sei jedoch, dass er die beiden genialen Künstler Edward Burne-Jones und William Morris in ihrer Entwicklung gefördert habe. Im Gegensatz zu den anderen Präraffaeliten benutzte er für seine Werke oft Aquarellfarben. Rossetti entwickelte hierin eine völlig eigene Malweise. Er trug die Farben häufig kräftig und in Strichen und Punkten auf. Dadurch erzielte er ein juwelenartiges Funkeln, das besonders bei heraldischen Verzierungen vorteilhaft wirkt (siehe Die Vermählung des hl. Georg mit der Prinzessin Sabra). Er machte keinen Unterschied zwischen Wasser- und Ölfarben. Er wendete die Techniken bei vielen Bildern über Kreuz an. Sein Freund William Bell Scott schrieb, Rossetti habe "mit Aquarellpinseln in Öl gemalt, mit so dünnem Auftrag wie bei einem Aquarell". Trotz seines Widerwillens gegen die akademische Disziplin war er der vorzüglichste der Präraffaeliten. Oft vertiefte er sich sehr in einzelne Themen, doch erhielt er sich seine Vielseitigkeit. So versuchte er sich 1857 in Oxford an der Wandmalerei. Aber sein Versuch scheiterte kläglich wegen seiner unvollkommenen Technik. ‎This is a very good hardcover two volume set in the original publisher's decorated dark blue cloth bindings. The bindings and endpapers were designed by Rossetti. The boards are dark blue with bright gilt designs, the endpapers are pale blue with similar designs in light black. The tops of both spines were apparently chipped and repaired professionally at some point with a blue-black cloth. The blue cloth covers are very clean, the gilt designs still very bright. Internally the endpapers have some foxing. Text pages quite clean. There are brief neat signatures from two people in the same family in Leeds, that owned the set at one time, one on each of the title-pages. Also an old booksellers listing for a similar set, clipped probably from an old catalog, is taped on to the inside back cover of volume 1. Edited with preface and notes by William M. Rossetti. 8" high X 5" wide, 528 & 521 pages. These books will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.‎
