Sherborne from a photograph taken in 1864 with tissue guard; two binder’s blanks at front and back; pp.xxxii380; original v. note dark green crushed Levant morocco very elaborately tooled gilt on sides and spine after a design by the author lettered gilt on spine doublures ruled and tooled gilt with small florets and leaves again after a design by the author; French marbled end-papers; a.e. burnished gold. Fine copy. AThe third printing of the first collective edition of Rossetti’s original poems without the translations following those of 1891 and 1893 . The superb binding which is by Zaehnsdorf is signed and dated 1895 suggesting that this copy was supplied by the publisher as sheets and that this is its original dress. It reproduces as far as the outside covers are concerned though on a smaller scale Rossetti’s design for the covers of the 1870 edition of the ‘Poems’ the tooling here being more perfect than the blocking on cloth of the originals however the brasses for that having been cut badly - though to speak more truly it follows more precisely the design of the binding of the two volume Collected Works of 1886 in its original envisagement the lower of the two small panels on the sides having ten horizontal rows of circlets on the front and eleven on the back cover. The tools used on the doublures are based on elements of the end-paper design of the 1870 volume. A beautiful volume and one of only a very small issue so bound. The front binder’s blank has an ink inscription dated “Nov 20 / 1895†giving the latest limiting date for this issue. These are two volumes from the Siddal Edition, volumes 2 & 3, handsomely bound in limp vellum covers, with titles in gilt, and exposed green silk bands. The volumes are very clean inside and just light soil outside. Both volumes with a small neat signature dated 1901 and also the owners' small elegant bookplate to the inside front cover of both volumes. 6" high X 5" wide, 135 & 140 pages. Engraved frontispieces by Arthur Ellis and prefaces by W.M.Rossetti in both volumes. Volume 2 published in 1900. Volume 3 published in 1901. Thess books will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.

The Collected Works of Dante Gabriel Rossetti
This is a very good hardcover two volume set in the original publisher's decorated dark blue cloth bindings. The bindings and endpapers were designed by Rossetti. The boards are dark blue with bright gilt designs, the endpapers are pale blue with similar designs in light black. The tops of both spines were apparently chipped and repaired professionally at some point with a blue-black cloth. The blue cloth covers are very clean, the gilt designs still very bright. Internally the endpapers have some foxing. Text pages quite clean. There are brief neat signatures from two people in the same family in Leeds, that owned the set at one time, one on each of the title-pages. Also an old booksellers listing for a similar set, clipped probably from an old catalog, is taped on to the inside back cover of volume 1. Edited with preface and notes by William M. Rossetti. 8" high X 5" wide, 528 & 521 pages. These books will be securely wrapped and packed in a sturdy box and shipped with tracking.

I saggi qui raccolti ricostruiscono le dinamiche secondo le quali ha agito l'immaginario apocalittico, soprattutto tra il XIV e il XVI secolo, quando costituì un aspetto centrale della vita intellettuale e culturale in Europa. Fin dai primi secoli dell'era cristiana i chierici svilupparono, a partire dal testo della Scrittura, un'ampia riflessione sul significato del tempo e sulla sua fine. Negli ultimi secoli del Medioevo l'interesse per l'escatologia si fece più accentuato, soprattutto sulla spinta degli avvenimenti politici, ecclesiastici e militari. Una particolare attenzione fu prestata alla figura dell'Anticristo, oggetto di molteplici identificazioni con personaggi storici, concreti o anche immaginari. Chierici e laici manifestarono inoltre una rilevante fiducia nelle numerose profezie concernenti papi ed imperatori. Dal canto suo, l'Apocalisse veniva letta in funzione di stimolo alla riforma religiosa oppure come predizione degli avvenimenti della fine. Tali attese vennero coltivate grazie ad un'ampia circolazione di scritti profetici di diversa natura, spesso riuniti sotto forma di collezione in manoscritti, e poi diffusi in cerchie più vaste tramite la riproduzione a stampa di singoli testi o di raccolte. L'influenza di profezie e di profeti dalla fine del Medioevo si inoltra così nella prima età moderna, in una continuità di attese che si coagulano in precisi personaggi: dallo stravagante frate pugliese convinto di essere il Papa angelico al navigatore ligure scopritore del Nuovo Mondo.
