br. Questo saggio rappresenta il primo studio complessivo della struttura giuridica su cui si regge la Divina Commedia, colmando in questo modo una lacuna nella bibliografia critica del poema. Justin Steinberg mostra come Dante immagini un aldilà dominato da leggi, giurisdizioni, funzionari e giudici, servendosi però di questo sistema articolato per esplorarne soprattutto le eccezioni. L'autore della Commedia viene così inserito nel dibattito contemporaneo sui rapporti fra letteratura e diritto, sullo stato d'eccezione e sulla sovranità. Dante sentiva che nel mondo reale il sistema giuridico era sempre più minacciato dalla doppia crisi della Chiesa e dell'Impero, dagli abusi e dagli eccessi dei papi e dall'assenza di un vero imperatore. Steinberg mostra come la costruzione dantesca di un oltremondo cerchi di colmare il vuoto che esisteva fra il valore universale del diritto romano e la mancanza di un potere sovrano in grado di applicarlo.

Antonio Stoppani fu celebre geologoe e paleontologo ed è unanimemente riconosiuto come il padre della geologia e paleontologia italiana. Nacque a Lecci nel 1824 e partecipò attivamente alle cinque giornate di Milano. Fu docente al Politecnico di Milano. Fu uno dei fondatori del Museo Civico di Scienze e filosofia Naturali di Milano. Appassionato alpinista, nel 1874 divenne il primo presidente della sezione milanese del Club Alpino Italiano. La sua opera più conosiuta è "Il Bel Paese". Trovanti contiene vari studi fra i quali: Delle priorità e preminenze degli italiani negli studi geologici, Il sentimento della natura e la Divina Commedia, Elogio di Giambattista Brocchi (celebre minerologo e geologo di Bassano del Grappa) e altri. The printed jacket is protected by a second dust jacket original glassine with a few edge-chips. A bright clean square tight copy. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are fresh crisp and unmarked -- obviously never read most pages are unopened. The title page is handsomely rubricated. The colophon page features Thomas B. Mosher's red anchor device. This anthology was assembled by Mosher and contains verse by Algernon Charles Swinburne; John Addington Symonds; Dante Gabriel Rossetti; A. Mary F. Robinson; Laurence Binyon; Cora Fabbri; Percy E. Pinkerton; Aureolus Paracelsus; John Todhunter; and Giovamnni Battista Guarini as translated by Leigh Hunt. Foreword by Thomas B. Mosher. The Venetian Series VI.
