<p>1859 English verse translation of Dante Alighieri's Inferno printed in London by Henry G. Bohn under the title The Trilogy: or Dante's Three Visions. This single-volume edition contains Dante's Inferno translated by John Wesley Thomas. The format reflects Bohn's practice of consolidating European classics for mid-century English readers. Thomas's rendering appears less frequently than those by Cary or Longfellow and is not noted in major bibliographies. The volume is bound in the publisher's original brown cloth with decorative blindstamped framing; spine titled in gilt. Binding remains secure though textblock is weak at the center. Moderate wear to corners and spine ends. Pages display toning and foxing consistent with age. Condition: Good. Handwritten provenance of Thomas Freer Barton-le-Willows June 20th 1859. Interior pages clean and complete. Color frontispiece included. Referenced in some period Bohn catalogues. Examples in original cloth are uncommon. Item Number: #28683. Samara: Printing House of the Headquarters of the 4th Army 1918. 95 1 pp.; 19.5 × 14 cm.</p><p>In the publisher's printed wrappers. Tears to spine small fragments missing. Tears along the edges of wrappers with small fragment losses. Printed on heavy paper.</p><p>Maria Isidorovna Liverovskaia 1879–1923 was a Russian Romance philologist translator specialist in the Western European literature of the Middle Ages and professor.</p><p>In her first marriage 1898 she was married to the naval physician Aleksei Vasil'evich Liverovskii. In her second marriage 1921 to the physicist Nikolai Nikolaevich Semenov future Nobel Prize laureate.</p><p>She received her secondary education at the Smol'nyi Institute 1890–1896 graduating with a large gold medal. In 1907 she became one of the first women in Russia to study as an auditor in the Romano-Germanic Department of the Faculty of History and Philology at St Petersburg University. She attended lectures at Munich University. She defended her dissertation for the degree of Master of Romano-Germanic Philology 1912; the subject of her dissertation was the songs of the Provençal troubadours. She taught at Raev's Higher Historical and Literary Courses and at the same time delivered a course in foreign literature at Tagantseva's women's gymnasium. She knew 17 languages. She translated into Russian Dante's <em>Vita nuova</em> and the medieval chanson-fable <em>Aucassin et Nicolette</em>. She worked at Petrograd University in the department of V. M. Zhirmunskii.</p><p>In 1917 she became one of the organizers of the Faculty of History and Philology at the Samara Teachers' Institute where she took the position of docent in the Department of Germanic and Romance Languages. When the pedagogical institute received the status of an open university Liverovskaia was awarded the title of professor becoming one of the first women in Russia to hold such a title.</p><p>A very rare edition; as WorldCat shows it is not held in any library outside Russia.</p>

The ""nine bad shots"" are slicing hooking topping smothering pulling pushing skying sclaffing and shanking. Starting with an introductory section on grip and stance and swing- illustrated with right and wrong photographs those authorities- in surprisingly simple terms- explain how a few basic principles properly applied will prevent and correct tendencies to do any or all of the bad shots. The last section covers iron play putting getting out of the rough and traps handling uneven lies -- again with photographs that illustrate the points they are making. Issued fortnightly between May 1903 and September 1904. 136 full-page Engravings by Dore. Minor edge wear and a rusty mark from a paper clip on the first part overall a very good to near-fine set in unusually nice condition considering the fragile format. There is light spine wear to a few parts one has a crease in the rear cover Part 7 has a small chip from the upper corner a couple have dried-out glue and are loose from the covers; in general they are very fresh and clean. Original receipts for some parts 6d from a Drapery shop are laid in also advertising leaflets and colour ad cards for soap are tipped-in to numerous parts. Title pages are printed in red & black; contents pages and list of plates are printed in the final part as well as a sample Dore plate for the forthcoming edition of Milton's Paradise Lost.
