London: Taylor and Hessey 1819. In the midway of this our mortal life I found me in a gloomy wood astray Second and preferred edition of one of the most important translations of Dante of the Romantic era following the scarce first edition which appeared in 1814 in such a diminutive format that it was barely legible. This edition was improved with corrections an additional index and notes. Reverand Henry Francis Cary 1772-1844 began his milestone verse translation in January 1797 starting with the Purgatorio before turning his attention to the Inferno in 1800 which would be the part he published first in 1805-6. Cary eventually completed the translation in 1812 and published it at his own expense in 1814 unable to find a publisher due to low sales. The work passed by largely unnoticed until it received enthusiastic praise from Coleridge during one of his lectures in 1818. Reinforced by a glowing review in the Edinburgh Review from Ugo Foscolo this led to the sale of 1000 copies in less than 3 months and the publication of the second edition in 1819. "This work is his chief claim to fame and it remained a standard text well into the twentieth century despite the fact that the number of translators of the work between 1782 and 1966 amounted to eighty-four. Cary's version was admired by Wordsworth Keats Lamb Coleridge Macaulay and Ruskin" ODNB. In his 1966 critical bibliography of the Commedia G. F. Cunningham commented: "Cary's version still holds its place as a minor classic thanks to the fact that its author was a competent versifier with some poetic perception". 3 vols 218 x 140 mm. All vols bound without half-titles. Contemporary Japanese vellum by Aubrey Binder Salisbury spines decorated red calf labels covers gilt-framed with flower detail in corners marbled endpapers top edges gilt others untrimmed. Housed in a custom red quarter morocco solander box with marbled sides by Heritage Bindery. Occasional old marginalia in pencil. Spines toned covers a little soiled and rubbed with spots of foxing vol. I with short split at foot of front joint but firm foxing to edges and occasionally to contents otherwise clean. London: printed for the author by J. Barfield 1814. First complete issue of a great Romantic translation First complete edition of Cary's translation rare first issue with uncancelled title pages. Often regarded as the best translation of Dante of the Romantic era the privately printed work was produced in a diminutive format and type to help Cary reduce his costs. Initial sales were slow but 1000 copies sold in the months after Coleridge championed the translation in 1818. Reverend Henry Francis Cary 1772-1844 began translating the Divina Commedia into blank verse in January 1797 and initially published the Inferno by itself from 1805 to 1806. The complete translation was ready around 1813 but as he could not find a publisher he brought out the work at his own expense in 1814. It was the first edition to adopt the well-known title The Vision. The work passed by largely unnoticed until Cary loaned Coleridge a copy upon their first meeting in 1817. Immediately enthusiastic Coleridge praised the translation and raised its profile during his February 1818 lecture on European literature. Later that month Ugo Foscolo of the Edinburgh Review remarked that Cary's translation was "'a great acquisition to the English reader' 'executed with a fidelity almost without example' and even opined that Dante would have used blank verse had he written in English" Cunningham p. 19. Its sudden critical success convinced the publisher Taylor and Hessey to purchase the unsold sheets from Cary and reissue them in 1818 with cancel title pages bearing their own imprint though still giving the original date of 1814. The firm then produced a second edition in a larger octavo format in 1819. A revised fourth edition published shortly before Cary's death in 1844 became the definitive English text and remained a standard translation well into the 20th century. 3 vols sextodecimo 104 x 64 mm. Bound without half-titles: pp. iii-xiv 2 220; 2 212; 2 216. Contemporary dark red half morocco spines lettered in gilt and ruled in black marbled sides endpapers and edges. The Vision as it was titled appeared to very little notice until Samuel Taylor Coleridge himself publicly praised the work and an article was read about its literary merits at the Royal Institution. First published with Doré's illustrations in French by Hachette in 1861 and first published in English by Cassell in 1866. "One can hardly deny that Doré is not merely one of the most popular but also one of the greatest of all illustrators… He gladly subjugated his imagination aiming at literal renderings of the precise descriptions of the Inferno. A LARGE PAPER COPY of the FIRST TRADE EDITION of the FIRST MODERN TRANSLATION of Dante into English in its complete form including all the parts of the trilogy. Preceded only by the privately printed edition issued by the author. Additionally for this edition is affixed a Life of Dante Notes and an Index. Tall 8vo still bound in the original printer’s boards untrimmed and uncut. VERY RARE THUS. lii 303; xi 309; 297 28 index 6 ads pp. and with all three half-titles as called for. A very rarely encountered set in excellent condition essentially as pristine internally. The text-blocks are in wonderful condition very finely preserved the original boards are rubbed and the backstrips mostly missing on Vols I and III but this is a set which has never been fiddled with and remains entirely unsophisticated and as originally offered from the printer. RARE FIRST EDITION AND COMPLETE SET IN ORIGINAL PRINTER’S BOARDS. ONE OF THE GREAT BOOKS OF ALL TIME.<br> Cary’s famous translation has long been considered the first modern rendering of Dante’s timeless epic into English. While previous English translations prior to Cary’s had been accomplished in the 18th century none were able to transfer into the English language the beauty and richness of language for which Dante has forever been revered.<br> It took Cary many years to make the complete translation. Indeed the parts of the COMEDY were released over a number of years from 1805 on. Cary was influenced greatly by the Romantics and by Coleridge in particular. Though the text was finished in mid-1812 Cary was unable to secure a publisher and was after some years obliged even with his very modest means to publish the work at his own expense. It at first excited little attention but it came under great notice primarily because of the applause of Coleridge whom Cary had met while pacing the beach reading Homer to his son. ‘Sir’ said Coleridge attracted by the sound of the Greek ‘yours is a face I should know. I am Samuel Taylor Coleridge.†<br>“During the rest of the day the wondrous stranger discoursed on Homer making young Cary ‘feel as one from whose eyes the scales were just removed’ and in<br>the evening carried home the translation of Dante of which he had never even heard. The next day he was able to repeat whole pages and his winter course of lectures gave it celebrity. <br> The new and first edition published by a general publisher was secured in 1819 and ever since.it has remained the translation which on Dante’s name being mentioned occurs first to the mind.†Cary’s translation allowed the rediscovery of Dante’s masterpiece by the British of the Romantic Era and it was praised not only by Coleridge but by Shelley Byron and Wordworth as well.<br> Copies of this the first generally published edition of the book in its original three-decker format are extremely scarce. This is a still more scarce large paper copy As to Dante himself “Dante’s theme the greatest yet attempted in poetry was to explain and justify the Christian cosmos through the allegory of a pilgrimage. To him comes Virgil the symbol of philosophy to guide him through the two lower realms of the next world which are divided according to the classifications of the ‘Ethics’ of Aristotle. Hell is seen as an inverted cone with its point where lies Lucifer fixed in ice at the centre of the world and the pilgrimage from it a climb to the foot of and then up the Purgatorial Mountain. Along the way Dante passes Popes Kings and Emperors poets warriors and citizens of Florence expiating the sins of their life on earth. On the summit is the Earthly Paradise where Beatrice meets them and Virgil departs. Dante is now led through the various spheres of heaven and the poem ends with a vision of the Deity. The audacity of his theme the success of its treatment the beauty and majesty of his verse have ensured that his poem never lost its reputation. Pp. xlvii 496 pp. A very handsome copy clean fresh and sound. A HANDSOME EARLY EDITION OF CARY’S HIGHLY IMPORTANT TRANSLATION OF DANTE INTO ENGLISH. Cary’s famous translation has long been considered the first modern rendering of Dante’s timeless epic into English. While previous English translations prior to Cary’s had been accomplished in the 18th century none were able to transfer into the English language the beauty and richness of language for which Dante has forever been revered.<br> It took Cary many years to make the complete translation. Indeed the parts of the COMEDY were released over a number of years from 1805 on. Cary was influenced greatly by the Romantics and by Coleridge in particular. Though the text was finished in mid-1812 Cary was unable to secure a publisher and was after some years obliged even with his very modest means to publish the work at his own expense. It at first excited little attention but it came under great notice primarily because of the applause of Coleridge whom Cary had met while pacing the beach reading Homer to his son. ‘Sir’ said Coleridge attracted by the sound of the Greek ‘yours is a face I should know. I am Samuel Taylor Coleridge.’ “During the rest of the day the wondrous stranger discoursed on Homer making young Cary ‘feel as one from whose eyes the scales were just removed’ and in the evening carried home the translation of Dante of which he had never even heard. The next day he was able to repeat whole pages and his winter course of lectures gave it celebrity. EARLY HENRY FRANCIS CARY TRANSLATION Cary's 1st translation was published in 1814; New Edition Corrected. The book features leather covers a beautiful hubbed spine with gilt decorations marbled end papers and a marbled text block on all sides and a frontispiece portrait of Dante. Includes the "Life of Dante" as well as a "Chronological View of the Age of Dante."<br /><br />Condition:<br />There are some tiny white stain specks on the front cover; clean back cover; the spine label has partially chipped; bright gilt designs on the spine. Tight binding. The text pages are in great condition with no foxing stains or tears; there is a name in pencil at the top of the title page - no other writing found.
