Volume one has two-inch split at bottom of front hinge; the front cover of volume two is entirely detached but present. All illustrations and tissue guards are present and in good condition. Volume one is entirely missing the index ribbon; volume two has remains of index ribbon between pages but it is no longer attached. Pages very lightly and uniformly tanned but still supple; faint tanning on the page that follows each plate. Pages clean and unmarked. 273 289 pages. No dust jackets. London: F. S. Ellis 1870. Inscribed to a Pre-Raphaelite disciple First trade edition presentation copy inscribed by the poet on the half-title: "To Sir Noel Paton with friendly regards D. G. Rossetti April 1870." A Scottish artist Sir Joseph Noel Paton 1821-1901 shared many of the same aesthetic ideals as Rossetti and his circle. While studying at the Royal Academy in 1843 he was invited by John Everett Millais to join the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood; though he initially declined his painting would be greatly influenced by their style particularly in its historical accuracy and "minutely observed natural detail" ODNB. He attended John Ruskin's 1853 Edinburgh lectures and later made several attempts to have Rossetti's paintings exhibited at the Royal Scottish Academy. He particularly praised Rossetti's painting Dante's Dream as "among the half-dozen supreme pictures of the world". Poems was Rossetti's first commercially published collection of original poems preceded by two private printings in 1869 and 1870. The events leading up to publication are notorious: when the poet's wife Elizabeth Siddal died in February 1862 Rossetti placed the original manuscripts of his poems in her coffin burying them with her in Highgate Cemetery. When he began composing new poems in 1869 he secretly exhumed the manuscripts of his earlier poems from her grave and published them the following year. The collection opens with "The Blessed Damozel" perhaps his most famous poem and also includes "Dante at Verona" "A Last Confession" "My Sister's Sleep" and several early sonnets. The edition is "perhaps most remarkable for being one of the first books to be designed throughout by an author. Over a period of nine months Rossetti supervised the printing of the proofs while painstakingly designing the covers and endpapers. The result had a great influence on writers and designers of the 1880s; Oscar Wilde's Poems 1881 and several of Walter Pater's books clearly were modeled on Rossetti's unique volume" Stetz & Lasner p. 32. This copy is in an early state binding before the spine was recut with an unsigned gathering bound at the rear. Octavo. With 4 pp. of publisher's advertisements at rear. Original blue cloth spine lettered in gilt spine and covers elaborately decorated in gilt illustrated endpapers untrimmed edges. Book label of William A. Strutz 1934-2024. Three-pages on thin onion skin paper see description 1858. Addressee not named but not someone unknown to Rossetti. “July 13 /58. My Dear Sir Pray accept the photograph which I am sending you today. I wish it were a better impression. The lines you will probably remember are by Henry Taylor. I wanted till after the benefit that I might report it. It was nearly a “decifer†I am glad to say and your kind efforts bore fruit in more than one direction. Let me thank you from Miss Herbert as well as from myself. Will you excuse this wretched scrap of paper which is all I can find- and believe me Dear Sir Yours sincerely DG Rossetti.†Henry Taylor was a contemporary dramatist and poet a man of letters who was admired by the Rossetti family. Ruth Herbert well-known stage actress was a major early model for Rossetti who first posed for him in a painting in 1858 the year of this letter. Near fine: a rare survival given the fragile nature of the onion skin paper which Rossetti used out of necessity. unknown

Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti 12 May 1828 9 April 1882 generally known as Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a British poet illustrator painter and translator. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Rossetti was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Rossetti's art was characterised by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism. His early poetry was influenced by John Keats. His later poetry was characterised by the complex interlinking of thought and feeling especially in his sonnet sequence The House of Life. Poetry and image are closely entwined in Rossetti's work. He frequently wrote sonnets to accompany his pictures spanning from The Girlhood of Mary Virgin 1849 and Astarte Syriaca 1877 while also creating art to illustrate poems such as Goblin Market by the celebrated poet Christina Rossetti his sister. Rossetti's personal life was closely linked to his work especially his relationships with his models and muses Elizabeth Siddal Fanny Cornforth and Jane Morris. Wikipedia hardcover
