One of 30 copies printed for Thomas J. Wise. Ashley Library IV 156. Presentation copy from Wise to John Drinkwater. For John Drinkwater from Thos. J. Wise. John Drinkwater wrote an introduction to the fourth volume of The Ashley Library: A Catalogue of Printed Books Manuscripts and Autograph Letters Collected by Thomas James Wise 1923. This was Wises greatest bibliographical achievement a complete catalogue of his books with full descriptions and collations. The first two volumes were published in 1922 and volumes 3-4 the next year. The massive and still very useful book was to run to a final total of eleven volumes. Each volume had a preface by a different luminary. . . The edition was limited to 250 copies of which 50 were on special paper. This was a short enough limitation to cause quite a scramble for copies and it was the �clat associated with this book that finally set the seal on Wises reputation as the bibliographical authority. Superbly illustrated with a splendid full-page woodcut within a historiated border at opening of Inferno and 99 smaller woodcuts in text; plus numerous black and white woodcut initials of various sizes. Folio. Modern dark-brown morocco binding with sides elaborately paneled in blind spine with five raised bands and gilt lettering. Enclosed in slipcase with matching morocco trimmings. Endpapers apparently retained from an earlier binding. Venice: Bartolomeo de Zanni 17 June 1507. First post-incunable folio edition and the first fully-illustrated post-incunable edition. This edition includes three small pieces: the Italian translations of the prayers Ave Maria Credo and Pater Noster attributed most likely spuriously to Dante. Adams D-86; Batines I p.68-9; Essling 435; Mambelli 22; Sander 2319; Olschki Choix 4389; Panzer VIII p. 384-5. Despite using the traditional incunable layout and including the 1481 Landino commentary the text of La Commedia in this curious edition is already that of the celebrated 1502 Aldine recension superintended by Pietro Bembo. Most of the woodcuts are from the Benalius-Capcasa edition printed 3 March 1491 except the one illustrating Paradiso I which is from the de Plasiis edition of 18 November 1491 and are attributed to the Master of the Pico Pliny a prolific miniaturist whose illuminations appear in a large number of manuscripts and incunables dating from 1464 to 1494. The first quire aa10 contains the introductory essays by Landino and Ficino from the celebrated 1481 Florentine edition including Landinos Sito forma et misura dellonferno et statura de giganti et di Lucifero Life of Dante and several pieces celebrating cultural superiority of Florence. Colophon at foot of leaf L7v. Registro on leaf L8r with woodcut white-on-black printers device with initials B.Z. at foot verso blank. Moderate and gradually diminishing damp-stain to margin of top outer corner. Occasional light soiling mostly to the opening and final leaves. One of the smaller woodcuts with a partial and non-detracting early coloring in brown ink. The 8 leaves of the last quire with lower margin skillfully and inconspicuously repaired at bottom edge well away from text; the final leaf L8 also with repairs to inner margin text unaffected. Harmless paper flaw to margin of aa8 no loss. Some soiling and staining to the endpapers. In all a clean solid wide-margined example of this rare and beautiful edition. <br/> <br/> hardcover

Trace of dust-darkening along top edges a few isolated faint marginal finger smudges otherwise a very good or better copy unopened without slipcase. First edition in this format. One of 225 copies printed by hand by Giovanni Mardersteig on Fabriano handmade paper from a total edition of 230 copies. The text is that of the "Società Dantesca" and in his prefatory essay Croce remarks that this "is more beautiful perhaps than any previous edition of this work though there have been some lavish ones. Cloth lightly rubbed a few very minor nicks at the spine ends a bit of offset to the coated brown endsheets but a quite nice copy very good or better. First edition of this early work by Rossetti his first regularly published book preceded by his contributions to THE GERM and the privately printed . Published in an edition of about 600 copies. This copy exhibits the uncorrected state of p.352 i.e. '252'; the normal array of cancels appear. A prototype for a wood engraved frontis/title is inserted in a handful of copies Tinker's second copy etc but was not included in the formally published book. ROSSETTI 9. ASHLEY LIBRARY IV:113-4.
