Donatien Alphonse François, marchese de Sade, aristocratico francese considerato a volte come scrittore, altre come filosofo, poeta, drammaturgo, saggista, criminale, politico, rivoluzionario, ed altro ancora, autore di numerosi classici di una letteratura etichettata come "erotica" in modo a dir poco semplificativo, fu soprattutto un illuminista estremamente attento nel testimoniare i costumi del suo tempo. Condannato a morte in contumacia per libertinaggio si rifugiò in Italia nel 1774 insieme alla sua cognata ed amante Anne-Prospère de Launay per tentare di sfuggire all'arresto; rientrato in Francia nel 1775 tornò poco dopo in Italia sotto il falso nome di "conte de Mazan" iniziando a raccogliere notizie per un futuro "voyage" accompagnato dal pittore Jean-Baptiste Tierce che avrebbe dovuto eseguire i disegni illustrativi da mettere a corredo del libro. Fu in questa occasione che raggiunse Napoli rimanendoci nei primi cinque mesi del 1776 e lasciandone una descrizione crudamente disincantata degli usi e costumi locali oltre che del suo patrimonio artistico e culturale; negli ultimi tempi di questa permanenza visitò quelle località dei dintorni, tra le quali naturalmente Capri, che ritenne di maggior interesse archeologico, artistico e naturalistico al fine di descriverle poi nel suo Voyage.

Francesco Petrarca July 20 1304 – July 19 1374 commonly anglicized as Petrarch was an Italian scholar and poet in Renaissance Italy and one of the earliest humanists. Petrarch's rediscovery of Cicero's letters is often credited for initiating the 14th-century Renaissance. Petrarch is often called the "Father of Humanism". In the 16th century Pietro Bembo created the model for the modern Italian language based on Petrarch's works as well as those of Giovanni Boccaccio and to a lesser extent Dante Alighieri. Petrarch would be later endorsed as a model for Italian style by the Accademia della Crusca. Petrarch's sonnets were admired and imitated throughout Europe during the Renaissance and became a model for lyrical poetry. He is also known for being the first to develop the concept of the "Dark Ages." This standing back from his time was possible because he straddled two worlds - the classical and his own modern day. Wikipedia ___________________________ Susannah Dobson née Dawson died 1795 was an English translator from the south of England. The daughter of John Dawson of the parish of St Dunstan London she married in 1759 a physician Dr Matthew Dobson of Liverpool who died at Bath Somerset in 1784. They had three children. Frances Burney mentions that in 1780 Susannah Dobson was ambitious to get into Mrs Thrale's circle but the latter was not keen: "Mrs Dobson… persecutes me strangely as if with violent & undesired Friendship; yet Mrs Lewis says She is jealous." A modern view of what Thrale wrote in Thraliana is that it implied Dobson was a lesbian. Burney wrote of her "Though coarse low-bred forward self-sufficient and flaunting she seems to have a strong masculine understanding." Dr Dobson had become Mrs Thrale's physician. Susannah Dobson died 30 September 1795 and was buried at St Paul's Covent Garden. Wikipedia hardcover

Il presente saggio sviluppa un'esegesi degli scritti sadiani, sottoponendo ad analisi il substrato filosofico sul quale il divin marchese, ha eretto larga parte del suo corpus letterario e documentandone le fonti, con uno sguardo rivolto al contesto storico e culturale del Settecento francese. Emerge, così, l'immagine d'un filosofo e di un intellettuale che, mediante l'artificio letterario e retorico del romanzo, sa affrontare le questioni più spinose e complesse del tardo Illuminismo e che, ampliando le intuizioni più radicali della tradizione materialistica e libertina, compendia nelle opere maggiori un pensiero tanto organico e profondo quanto abissale e distruttivo, aristocratico ed elitario, frutto di un'intelligenza e di una sensibilità erotiche difficilmente riscontrabili presso altri autori.
