Each major order of Monk is depicted & described in most unflattering terms. "Hence it is evident that the monk forms a distinct class of mammalia which holds a middle place and forms a connecting link between man and monkey." "Dominican Monk. Demeanor hypocritical; gait lascivious; expression of the countenance perfidious; barks or yells at midnight with a harsh discordant voice. The olfactory senses of this species are developed in the most wonderful manner so that it will smell at any distance wine and heresy. Strong was Treasurer U.S. Sanitary Commission during the Civil War. Marbled endpapers. Top edge gilt. 215mm. Original quarter leather over marbled boards. Binding worn with rear board detached. First edition in English. Ignaz von Born 1742-1791 was Austrian by birth. Educated at a Jesuit college in Vienna he spent 16 months as a member of that order before becoming thoroughly disillusioned. He studied law for a time in Prague and then toured Holland France and Germany studying mineralogy. He returned to Prague in 1770 and worked in the department of Mines and the Mint. In 1776 he returned to Austria and wrote several books on mineralogy including a very influential study in 1786 dealing with extracting precious metals through amalgamation. In addition to his scientific work Born was known for his satires especially of the Jesuits. In this work he studies the habits and habitats of that most pernicious of species - the clerical Monk in a clever send-up of the still novel Linnaean system. Langensalza Hermann Beyer N.D. but ca. 1875. Oblong folio 42.0 x 34.0 cm. Printed front wrapper and twelve chromolithographed plates. Contemporary blind green pebbled quarter cloth over marbled boards. Later paper label with gilt title mounted on the front board. A colourful atlas that went through nine printings up to 1885 but is quite rare nonetheless. Perhaps it was used only very locally. There is no indication of authorship. Four plates show the vegetable kingdom one plate marine invertebrates the shells in reverse one plate insects one plate fish and reptiles including snakes crocodiles etc. two plates show birds and three plates mammals. Boards rubbed the insect-plate with a large tear repaired the margins somewhat soiled; otherwise a good copy. Not in any major bibliography. hardcover

Il souhaite à son « cher collègue et ami », une seconde médaille. « Je vous remercie bien vivement de vos compliments qui me font d’autant plus de plaisir que vous êtes un peintre de la bonne souche du bon maître Vollon. Votre intérieur d’église est extrêmement bien et nul plus que moi ne serait heureux de lui voir une seconde médaille, et ce ne serait que justice. Au moment des propositions, il vous a manqué 2 voix mais j’ai travaillé mes amis depuis et j’espère bien qu’au moment du vote définitif vendredi être plus heureux ».

Magnifique lettre à propos de son tableau « Le Bénédicité des Hospitalières de Beaune » qui figura au Salon de 1903. Il adresse à son correspondant de nombreux détails à propos de cette œuvre et la décrit telle qu’il l’a ressent « Ce titre vous indique où j’ai pris mon sujet c’est à l’Hôtel Dieu de Beaune en Bourgogne fondé en 1443 par Nicolas Robin chancelier de Philippe le Bon Duc de Bourgogne […] J’ai 14 dames hospitalières debout autour d’une table au moment du déjeuner elles disent le Bénédicité. Elles sont vêtues du costume datant de l’époque de la fondation et qui est en laine blanche et coiffée du hennin en toile blanche également. La réfection est toute en boiseries Louis XV et dans le fond un grand tableau sur Toile représentant Jésus devant Pilate, dû au pinceau du peintre Moillon ».
