AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED TWICE BY THE NATURALIST JOHN RUSSELL 6TH DUKE OF BEDFORD.
London: July 30 1838. 1838. Good. - Approximately 45 words penned in black ink on the first side of a sheet of paper folded to form 4 sides each 9-1/8 inches high by 8 inches wide. Written from Belgrave Square in London the letter is signed "Bedford". There is some light staining to the letter. 3 of its 4 corners are creased and its right side is darkened. Folded 4 times for mailing with 2 additional light horizontal creases. On the 4th side is the recipient's address with Bedford's free frank and a seal. There is a piece out of the 4th side. Good. <p>The Duke is writing to Mr. Thomas Boys a seller of prints and "Printseller to His Majesty" whose business was located at 11 Golden Square London. The letter suggests that the Duke may have been looking to buy an artwork from him. He regrets that he had no time during his brief stay in London to call on Boys at his home and hopes that he will be able to see "David Wilkie's original drawing" on his next visit.<p>Under the name Lord John Russell Bedford entered the House of Commons as one of the members for Tavistock Devon. He succeeded to the dukedom in 1802 on the death of his elder brother. In 1830 he rebuilt Covent Garden market at a cost of 40000 pounds. He was one of the first vice-presidents of the newly founded Agriculture Society and was also an enthusiastic naturalist publishing several books and catalogs related to trees and plants at his country house at Woburn. From 1813 to 1815 he was in Italy and acquired a notable collection of paintings and statuary which were housed at Woburn. [London]: July 30, 1838. unknown
