Based on American historian Bernard DeVoto's 1947 book "Across the Wide Missouri With an Account of the Discovery of the Miller Collection" William A. Wellman's film is a dramatization of an account of several fur traders and their interactions with Native Americans. Flint Mitchell Clark Gable is a fur trapper in the 1830's in unnamed territories along the Missouri River in the Rocky Mountains. Flint marries a Blackfoot princess Kamiah Maria Elena Marques in an attempt to access beaver rich territories belonging to the Blackfoot people and ends up falling in love with her. Beautifully shot with breathtaking vistas in the Rocky Mountains. Set in and shot on location in Colorado. Goldenrod titled wrappers rubber-stamped copy No. 179 dated 6-6-50 with credits for producer Robert Sisk director William Wellman and screenwriter Talbot Jennings. 117 leaves with last page of text numbered 102. Shown is Ann Hovey as she is attacked after stowing away on a train by Ward Bond playing against type as a villainous railroad worker. The rape is not only attempted but takes place a radical element even in a pre-Code film. A film that has held up well in that it breaks the stereotype of hobos as nothing more than restless drifters and delves into what fueled the movement during the Great Depression. Many teenagers male and female were forced to leave their homes and ride the rails because their families were unable to provide support. 8 x 10 inches. About Near Fine with some penciled annotations on the verso regarding another actress in the film Dorothy Coonan who would go on to marry the film's director William A. Wellman. Octavo 180pp. A very good copy with some scuffing to the edges in a very good dust jacket with a large chip at the base and at the top right corner of the front panel. This was J. Talbot Holland's copy; Holland was a Broadway actor who played the part of "Al" in this production. The book is signed by about 20 cast members including Sarah Marshall the lead actress who won a Theatre World Award for her portrayal of Bonnie Dee Ponder.
