Singer Isaac Bashevis short story playwright; Leah Napolin playwright
Yentl The Yeshiva Boy Original script for the 1974 play
New York: Chelsea Theater Center 1974. Original script for the 1974 play. Based on the 1962 short story by Isaac Bashevis Singer and adapted by him and playwright Leah Napolin for the stage the play premiered October 25 1975 at the Eugene O'Neill Theatre and ran for a total of 223 performances. Tovah Feldshuh was nominated for a Tony for her portrayal of the title role. Faithful to the original story the play follows a young women who begins living as a man named Anshel after her father dies in order to continue studying the Torah in defiance of Jewish tradition. There's a strong theme of transgenderism in the play and story as the main character describes himself as "neither one sex nor the other" and having "the soul of a man in the body of a woman." Even after being discovered Yentl chooses to continue to live as Anshel rather than return to life as a woman. This contrasts strongly with the text of the better known Barbara Streisand film despised by Singer where the transgender aspect of the narrative is replaced by a heteronormative romance and musical numbers. Blue studio wrappers. Title page present dated 1974 with credits for novelist Singer and playwright Napolin. 155 leaves mimeograph duplication. Pages Very Good plus wrapper Very Good bound with two gold brads. Chelsea Theater Center unknown

Sirotnik, Gareth
Running Tough: The Story of Vancouver's Jack Diamond
245 pages. Index. Bibliography. "In 1926, four months after leaving his father's once-prosperous farm in Galicia (then a part of Poland), Jack Diamond - age 17 - got off a rickety old boat in Quebec City with a straw suitcase and barely enough money to get him to Vancouver. Ten years later he was battling Canada's national corporations for control of British Columbia's meatpacking industry. Follows Diamond from horse-and-buggy potato pedlar to king of B.C.'s thoroughbred racing; from butcher to university chancellor (SFU)... Along the way, his story is interlinked with the collapse of three European empires, the growth of Vancouver into a burgeoning metropolis and influential people including W.A.C. Bennett and Supreme Court Justice Angelo Branca." - from dust jacket. A well-researched and very readable biography of this amazing sportsman, businessman and philantropist. Will be of special interest to those whose ancestors lived in Galicia early in the last century. Average wear. Usual library markings. A sound copy. Book

Sisson, Terence
Just Nuisance Ab - His Full Story
151 pages with black and white illustrations. The remarkable life-story of one of the most famous Great Danes of all time. Able Seaman Just Nuisance was formally inducted into the Royal Navy at Simon's Town in August 1939, shortly before the outbreak of World War II and his exploits during the war made him a legend in his lifetime. First edition in 1984 was written upon the 40th anniversary of Nuisance's death as a tribute to his old canine "oppo", and as a permanent record of a Great Dane with a unique place in the annals of war - and of dogdom. Prior owner protected the colour illustrated covers with glossy clear adhesive plastic which now affixes first and last leaves to their respective covers. Some writing atop title page else unmarked. Moderate wear. Contents lightly yellowed. Book
