Issued without dust jacket. <br /><br />Original edition in deep bright orange with debossed type on the front cover done for the show in Daytona Beach the book was reissued in yellow-orange cloth by <strong>the University of Washington Press</strong> and later by <strong>Portland Press</strong> both later editions also included some paint signed copies. Chihuly has reused ISBNs for many of his titles confusing the determination of which are first editions. His first book <strong>Chihuly Glass</strong> was self published in 1982. The ISBN was reused for <strong>Chihuly Baskets</strong> in 1994 published by <strong>Portland Press</strong>. <strong>Portland Press</strong> created by Chihuly in the early 1990s for publication of his own books. <strong>The University of Washington</strong> first published several titles including the First Edition of <strong>Form From Fire</strong>. Chihuly reissued <strong>Form from Fire</strong> with the same ISBN as the <strong>UW</strong> publication through <strong>Portland Press</strong> in the early 1990s. The editions are clearly identifiable by the <strong>University of Washington</strong> credit on both the title page and the CIP page which was changed to <strong>Portland Press</strong> on the later version. Grund dieses Aufsehens war, daß hier ein international bekannter "seriöser" Wissenschaftler in die politische Arena stieg und ein durchaus landläufiges Thema in brisant-aggressiver Weise behandelte: er fragte nicht nach den Ideen, auf die sich die Intellektuellen berufen, sondern nach ihrer Einstellung zu dem, was in Vietnam geschieht, und das Ergebnis war ein zorniges 'faccu.se. Seitdem ist Noam Chomsky aus der amerikanischen Widerstandsbewegung nicht mehr fortzudenken. Seine Aufsätze, Reden, Diskussionsbeiträge halfen dem Protest, sich zu artikulieren und zu begründen. Und sie öffneten vielen die Augen für die Vorgeschichte der heutigen Repression und Verblendung, für den Anteil, den die liberalen Intellektuellen, diese "neuen Mandarine" des Imperium Americanum, an Amerikas Weg in den Faschismus haben, den Chomsky mit einer Fülle erschreckender Zitate illustriert. -- Zehn Aufsätze, in den letzten beiden Jahren geschrieben, sind in diesem Band versammelt. Ihr zentrales Thema ist die zwielichtige Rolle, die die amerikanische Intelligenz bei der ideologischen Rechtfertigung der amerikanischen Macht, an der sie selbst partizipiert, spielte und spielt. Das Buch beginnt mit Vietnam und endet mit diesem Thema, an dem sich - so radikal wie wohl noch nie bisher - die liberale Intelligenz scheidet: in eine, die weiterhin mystifiziert und legitimiert, und in eine andere, die nicht mehr "liberal" zu sein vermag, weil das Zustimmung zum Völkermord bedeuten würde. -- Chomsky attackiert die amerikanischen Intellektuellen - betroffen sind gleichermaßen die deutschen. Sein Buch greift ein in die heute geführte Diskussion um die Politisierung der Wissenschaft; es demonstriert, wohin das als unpolitisch und wertfrei sich verstehende Akademikertum führt - in eine Verblendung, die der Repression Vorschub leistet. Chomskys Kritik an dieser liberalen Haltung ist zugleich ein Aufruf zum Widerstand gegen sie, ein Plädoyer für jene "Stimmung aus Zweifel und Rebellion", die er bei vielen Studenten angetroffen hat, und auf die allein er seine Hoffnung für die Zukunft seines Landes gründet.
