‎Very nice copy. Rare. Almost certainly printed and bound in Exeter. All of the plates are signed with Millais well-known monogram - and that to p.26 also in full although an attempt appears to have been made to cancel this. The improbability of Millais having illustrated a provincially published novel suggests the possibility that it made its first appearance in a magazine - conceivably ‘The Monthly Packet’ for which the advertisements claim the author as a contributor. Three other works by the same author are mentioned in the advertisements: “Two Christmas Days†a twopenny brochure issued by Barnes of Budleigh Salterton; “Church or Chapel One or Both†issued by “John Hodges Bedford Street Covent Garden London; And Church Street Frome Selwood†as the 6th number of ‘Penny Manuals for the People’; and ‘â€The Blarney Stone†An Idyl’ after the manner of Tennyson issued price Three Pence by the same publisher as the present volume. Not in Sadleir Wolff or the British Library Catalogue though the London Library has a copy listed under Gibbons. Calf of spine defective and boards detached; light foxing of first and last few leaves; text otherwise fine. Four works in one volume. The third canto of Childe Harold agrees with Wise’s second issue in all respects commented on by Wise I p.56 and with Randolph’s second issue first variant in all respects commented on by Randolph pp.59-60: the quotation on the title-page is three and a half inches wide and the ‘L’ of ‘Lettre’ falls under the ‘u’ of ‘celui’ the exclamation mark is present at the end of the first line of the second stanza and the fifth line of the note on p.67 has the incorrect reading ‘Eagle’ instead of ‘Falcon’. The last line of the second stanza in this copy ends ‘prevai’ however instead of ‘prevail.’ a variant not noticed by either Wise or Randolph. The fourth canto not in Randolph agrees with Wise’s first issue up to p.208 the end of signature ‘O’ p.155 ending “the impressions of†not “â€Esortazione†as in the second issue but signatures ‘P’ and ‘Q’ are signed ‘P’ and ‘Q’ as in Wise’s third issue and carry the first reprinted text with the revised notes p.217 having three footnotes and p.218 beginning “says Lipsius†the five line errata which was reduced to three lines in the fourth issue and cancelled altogether in the fifth issue here appearing on p.236. Since the present copy is in a contemporary binding this mixture of sheets is evidently correct as issued. The first issue is definitely rare. Lara is of the first separate edition Randolph pp.45-6 noting this as the first issue: the text ending on p.70 and the following leaf being blank on recto and bearing the imprint on the verso the second issue had an inserted quarter sheet bearing a prose note between these two leaves. Randolph states that in all copies of both issues of which he had knowledge p.13 is incorrectly numbered ‘31’; the present copy belongs to what is evidently a somewhat uncommon and presumably early state of text p.13 here being correctly numbered. Two parts in one volume. ‘Canto the Third’ is an apparently unrecorded later state of Wise’s first issue. v. Wise I p.56; Randolph pp.59-60. In this copy the quotation on the title-page is three and a half inches wide as in Wise’s second issue but the ‘L’ of ‘Lettre’ falls under the ‘l’ of ‘celui’ instead of the ‘u’ the exclamation mark is absent at the end of the first line of the second stanza and the last line ends correctly ‘prevail.’ the ‘l.’ of which was dropped in some presumably early copies after the correction was made whilst the fifth line of the note on p.67 has the incorrect reading ‘Eagle’ instead of ‘Falcon’: all points characteristic of the first issue. Paper of spine slightly faded and with small chips to head and tail; slight spine-roll; crayon marks on four leaves and pencilled revisions on one; otherwise a nice copy. Proof Copy - so designated on front wrapper - and differing textually from the published book in several respects: in particular the alteration of a sentence on p.51 which was evidently thought too startling. Eight words have been cancelled in pencil and two substituted presumably with authorial sanction and just conceivably in Coward’s hand. Some of the crayon marks run from one page-margin to its conjugate and suggest that the volume must still have been in sheets when they were made. The published volume which was dated the following year contained a frontispiece thirty plates and an index not here present. Vertical crease in wrappers v. note; wrappers a little foxed and very slightly worn; otherwise a nice copy. One of a small number of copies privately printed for the author. In his 1923 revue ‘London Calling’ Coward burlesqued the Sitwells as “The Swiss Family Whittlebotâ€. As he explains in ‘Present Indicative p.197: “During the first two weeks of the run I received to my intense surprise a cross letter from Osbert Sitwell. In fact so angry was it that I first of all imagined it to be a joke.†During the sketch four poems were recited by “Hernia Whittlebotâ€. The present volume in which Coward has added a further 16 similar verses appears to have been his response to Sitwell’s outrage and one wonders whether the poem “To Nöel Coward†beginning “Pale faced rat! / Wallowing in the pit of middle-class degeneracy. / Juggling clumsily with the immortal souls / Of your superiors. / Illogically defying the very canons of beauty†accurately reflects the tone and content of Sitwell’s letter. As Coward goes on to note: “shortly afterwards another letter arrived even crosser than the first.†Coward’s response this time was more public: the volume ‘Chelsea Buns by Hernia Whittlebot’ published by Hutchinson in 1925. “To this day†says Coward writing in 1936 “I am still a little puzzled as to why that light-hearted burlesque should have aroused him his brother and sister to such paroxysms of fury. But the fact remains that it did and I believe still does.†The vertical crease noted in the covers and faintly visible throughout as an undulation on the more flexible paper of the text occurs on several of the surviving copies of this pamphlet and may suggest that they were posted to Coward’s friends folded into a ‘legal’ sized envelope. It at least distinguishes the present copy from the small residue of unissued copies sold off by the Noël Coward society a few years ago which created a temporary illusion of availability. The ‘erratum’ noted in our description ‘Nöel’ for ‘Noël’ occurs throughout and is presumably intentional though in the Contents the diaeresis is reduced to a single dot.
