According to Ruari McLean's Victorian Book Design p.151 there were only about eight different titles bound in this style. This was one of the most successful of all the gift or table books of this period and with the most elaborate of the papier mache bindings pierced to show a crimson paper background. Printed letterpress by Vizetelly Brothers with many pages embellished with initials and decorative wood-engravings printed in black and red 6 vibrant chromolithographed illustrations in the text enhanced by the surrounding black type printed in 1000 copies. The front cover is detached with a piece missing from the bottom corners backstrip is mostly missing gutta percha binding has disolved with many pages now loose gift inscription to front blank. Plates bright and clean. Henry Noel Humphreys 1807-1879 was a graphic artist and author born in Birmingham. His illustration work ranged from natural history and book illumination to works of fiction. He would do the incredibly attractive illustrations in Jane Loudon's Ladies' Flower Garden Series 1839-1848. The present title was first published in 1841 but several editions followed. Humphreys would also publish a similar work on Moths in 1845 and a second work on moths and butterflies in 1859.
