London: John Murray 1821. First edition of Byron's retelling of the fall of the Assyrian monarchy and its supposed last king with the Two Foscari and Cain A Mystery. Octavo original boards. In near fine condition. Housed in a custom slipcase. Set in ancient Nineveh and recounting the fall of the Assyrian monarchy and its supposed last king Sardanapalus draws its story mainly from the Historical Library of Diodorus Siculus and from William Mitford's History of Greece. Byron wrote the play during his stay in Ravenna and dedicated it to Goethe. It has had an extensive influence on European culture inspiring a painting by Delacroix and musical works by Berlioz Liszt and Ravel among others. John Murray hardcover books

Grey paper over boards; black green and purple cover illustration of female cat with ball of yarn sitting next to kitten in a cradle. Grey fixed endpapers. No date of publication given; it was published in Britain by Blackie and Son in 1908. This is the first American edition with first verse being "Playtime in Pussy-town." Title vignette is a cat holding a sign reading "Christmas Carols." Most pages have one illustration with amusing verse some have more than one illustration on a page. The center two pages without verse contain four illustrations set in a nickelodeon showing what happens when an audience of cats sees a moving image of mice. The final 11 pages contain verses about Christmas including Santa Claws and several about the traditional English pantomime. Gift inscription on front fixed endpaper dated 1912 or 1913. The scarce first American edition stating only Dodge Publishing is much less common than either the English edition by Blackie and Son or those listing both publishers. In Good- Condition: original cloth spine is gone as is typical of this book; boards have been reattached through an old repair; chipping along edges of gray paper over boards with most significant loss along spine and fore-edge of front board; light soiling throughout primarily along lower edges; occasional foxing; 2-cm. tear from top edge and lower edge of title page at gutter; otherwise solid. <br/><br/> Dodge Publishing Company hardcover

Calf of spine defective and boards detached; light foxing of first and last few leaves; text otherwise fine. Four works in one volume. The third canto of Childe Harold agrees with Wise’s second issue in all respects commented on by Wise I p.56 and with Randolph’s second issue first variant in all respects commented on by Randolph pp.59-60: the quotation on the title-page is three and a half inches wide and the ‘L’ of ‘Lettre’ falls under the ‘u’ of ‘celui’ the exclamation mark is present at the end of the first line of the second stanza and the fifth line of the note on p.67 has the incorrect reading ‘Eagle’ instead of ‘Falcon’. The last line of the second stanza in this copy ends ‘prevai’ however instead of ‘prevail.’ a variant not noticed by either Wise or Randolph. The fourth canto not in Randolph agrees with Wise’s first issue up to p.208 the end of signature ‘O’ p.155 ending “the impressions of†not “â€Esortazione†as in the second issue but signatures ‘P’ and ‘Q’ are signed ‘P’ and ‘Q’ as in Wise’s third issue and carry the first reprinted text with the revised notes p.217 having three footnotes and p.218 beginning “says Lipsius†the five line errata which was reduced to three lines in the fourth issue and cancelled altogether in the fifth issue here appearing on p.236. Since the present copy is in a contemporary binding this mixture of sheets is evidently correct as issued. The first issue is definitely rare. Lara is of the first separate edition Randolph pp.45-6 noting this as the first issue: the text ending on p.70 and the following leaf being blank on recto and bearing the imprint on the verso the second issue had an inserted quarter sheet bearing a prose note between these two leaves. Randolph states that in all copies of both issues of which he had knowledge p.13 is incorrectly numbered ‘31’; the present copy belongs to what is evidently a somewhat uncommon and presumably early state of text p.13 here being correctly numbered. Mazeppa is as Wise’s second issue being without an imprint on p.70. All books listed by Robert Temple are first editions unless otherwise stated. hardcover

In this copy the quotation on the title-page is three and a half inches wide as in Wise’s second issue but the ‘L’ of ‘Lettre’ falls under the ‘l’ of ‘celui’ instead of the ‘u’ the exclamation mark is absent at the end of the first line of the second stanza and the last line ends correctly ‘prevail.’ the ‘l.’ of which was dropped in some presumably early copies after the correction was made whilst the fifth line of the note on p.67 has the incorrect reading ‘Eagle’ instead of ‘Falcon’: all points characteristic of the first issue. The fourth canto not in Randolph agrees with Wise’s second issue throughout: p.155 ending “Esortazione†not “the impressions of†as in the first issue and signatures ‘P’ and ‘Q’ being so signed rather than ‘P’ and ‘Q’ as in Wise’s third issue and carrying the original text p.217 having two footnotes instead of the later three and p.218 beginning “the other†rather than “says Lipsius†the five line errata which was reduced to three lines in the fourth issue and cancelled altogether in the fifth issue here appearing on p.236. Mazeppa bound without the half title and the rear ads apparently the 2nd issue the imprint was moved to the verso of the ads page for the 2nd issue. The Deformed Transformed is the second edition. 80pp; 69 1 pp; 88pp.<br/><br/>The fragment included after Mazeppa is the result of the famous ghost writing contest which resulted in Frankenstein. 8vo., First Edition, EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED with engraved frontispiece and 18 engraved plates; most attractively bound in full red calf, sides with gilt frame border, expertly rebacked to style with old backstrip gilt laid down, gilt top, gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers, uncut, a remarkably well-preserved, fresh, crisp copy. With the publisher's 4pp catalogue (dated February 1816) at end. THIS COPY WAS BOUND BY ZAEHNSDORF IN THE LATTER HALF OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY FOR CHICAGO PUBLISHER AND WHOLESALER A.C. McCLURG; the binding is signed on front free endpaper verso. It was possibly compiled on behalf of a dedicated collector, for the plates and portraits are numerous and relevant. The frontispiece ('Leila', engraved by Mote after Corbaux) and 11 plates relate to the first work; the remaining 7 plates to the second. Of particular interest are the fine portraits of John Hobhouse (to whom the work is dedicated) by Hopwood after Wivell, and John Sobieski (engraved by Thomson from a picture in the Louvre).
