Early printed bookplate of John Colston to each front pastedown with later inked ex-libris "J. Hames" added beneath each printed portion. The full foolscap octavo edition of Don Juan preceded in each case by quarto editions in the same year. Cantos I-II are from an early but not first printing with 1820 date at base of title page but no statement of "New Edition" as seems somewhat common though this issue appears unmentioned by Wise. Set in ancient Nineveh and recounting the fall of the Assyrian monarchy and its supposed last king Sardanapalus draws its story mainly from the Historical Library of Diodorus Siculus and from William Mitford's History of Greece. Byron wrote the play during his stay in Ravenna and dedicated it to Goethe. Three poems bound up together in contemporary calf moderate edgewear corners rounded rebacked date to front blank old Atwood armorial bookplate inside cover scattered foxing and browning; Manfred with the added quote to the title and the Davison imprint at rear usually regarded as the 3rd issue bound without the half title. Mazeppa bound without the half title and the rear ads apparently the 2nd issue the imprint was moved to the verso of the ads page for the 2nd issue. The Deformed Transformed is the second edition. 80pp; 69 1 pp; 88pp.<br/><br/>The fragment included after Mazeppa is the result of the famous ghost writing contest which resulted in Frankenstein. Index shows 61 plates so for some reason these volumes appear to be extra illusterated. Bound in period half calf calf corners marble boards raised bands gilt tooling leather title labels coloured endpapers. Calf rubbed scuffed worn on edges. Generally both binding in good firm condition. Internally some persistant moderate spotting or browning heavier in plates. Generally most plates clean. The binding is signed by Zaehnsdorf on front free endpaper verso. As usual this copy is bound without the half-title and advertisement leaf. With the publisher's 4pp catalogue dated February 1816 at end. THIS COPY WAS BOUND BY ZAEHNSDORF IN THE LATTER HALF OF THE NINETEENTH CENTURY FOR CHICAGO PUBLISHER AND WHOLESALER A.C. McCLURG; the binding is signed on front free endpaper verso. It was possibly compiled on behalf of a dedicated collector for the plates and portraits are numerous and relevant. The frontispiece 'Leila' engraved by Mote after Corbaux and 11 plates relate to the first work; the remaining 7 plates to the second. Of particular interest are the fine portraits of John Hobhouse to whom the work is dedicated by Hopwood after Wivell and John Sobieski engraved by Thomson from a picture in the Louvre. All uniformly bound in attractive fine early leather bindings of full red straight grained morocco. Spines with four raised bands each with gilt ruling. Compartments ruled lettered and decorated in gilt. Gilt decorative borders on boards with four blind stamped ruled lines inside the panel. Turn-ins with floral gilt roll. Board edges with gilt tooling to corners. All edges gilt. Neat previous owner bookplates on front paste downs. One gathering slightly sprung in volume one. Some light spotting to a few pages in each volume but generally a clean set. Spine of volume three is a bit faded and worn and a bit of rubbing to the extremities of the other volumes but overall a very good and beautifully bound set. John Murray.
