His novels show the grimy side of poverty and prosperity in Victorian England showing poor social conditions alongside repulsive characters. Undated dated from Jisc from a copy held at the University of Liverpool Library. Bookplate loosely inserted 'John Craig Freebairn'. Condition: In a half calf binding with marbled paper to the boards. Externally smart. A little rubbing to the boards and raised bands resulting in a small amount of loss of leather to the rear board. Front hinge is starting but firm. Bookplate loosely inserted. Other than these points the pages are clean and bright with just a hint of toning and age spotting to betray it's age. The first edition first impression of this work. The first edition of this work in book form. Complete with two volumes bound as one. 'Our Mutual Friend' was the last novel Charles Dickens completed before his death in 1870. It is a satire on society the plot following a young man who recently came into a fortune after his father dies who's body is then found in the Thames. The money then goes to the naive employees of the late father. Volume I is complete with a frontispiece and nineteen plates. Volume II is complete with twenty plates with the frontispiece bound facing page fifty-four. Dickens is one of the most popular authors of the Victorian age. His novels show the grimy side of poverty and prosperity in Victorian England showing poor social conditions alongside repulsive characters. Illustrated throughout by Marcus Stone with a frontispiece to each volume nineteen plates to Volume I and nineteen plates to Volume II. Collated complete except lacking the slip preceding page one of Volume I and lacking the half-title of Volume II both as stated by John Eckle in his Dickens bibliography on page 97. Condition: Rebound in a half calf binding with cloth to the boards. Externally generally smart. Light marks to the boards and spine. Some loss to the head of the spine. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and generally clean with the odd scattered spot. Some loss to the first and last few pages and to the frontispiece though not affecting image.
