This book is in an early revision state with most of the internal flaws and points listed by Smith with a few corrections. pp. 66-67. Full page vignette engraving protective tissue engraved title title page with copyright on verso Dedication preface vii-viii Contents ix-xii List of Plates xiii-xiv Dickens's Errata 10 items xv 624 pp. blank endpaper colored endpaper. Fraying top ad bottom of spine mild skewing. Boards rubbed with scrape marks to rear board. Expected occasional foxing. All the structural components are solid. John Carter Taste & Technique in Book Collecting quoted in Smith p. ix said "many of Dickens's cloth-bound novels are hardly ever found in fine condition.Cloth cases provided for his usually ample volumes were poor quality so that the collector may find Martin Chuzzlewit and David Copperfield as difficult and Pickwick more difficult to secure in fine original cloth than in the parts." In the 1860's Dickens revised and edited his books releasing the so-called "Charles Dickens Edition" or "Original Edition" of which this is part. Bright and handsome. Dickens' "adventure" classic and without doubt his most exciting novel and one he loved well himself in which the Ironic Wit sets forth a plot now beloved to novelists and moviemakers alike - the rich old dude who doesn't trust any of his money-grubbing kin and must find a way to select the proper heir. Dickens re-edited his works for this edition with the intention of developing an authoritative version of his works. When Oxford University Press decided to print a set of Dickens' works this was the edition that was chosen. Light soiling light edgewear. Updike The Merrymount Press hand numbered. This is copy number 698. NOT ex-library. Hardcover has cream paper-covered boards. Front cover has blind-stamped Chi-Rho cross in circle and other circular and floral border designs in central panel. Top page edges are gilt. Deckle fore and bottom edges. Gilt spine lettering. One black and white plate a facsimile of the first page of the manuscript. Only one of the joined pages has been opened the rest are still uncut. Includes glassine dust cover slightly wrinkled with a few small tears at edges. Binding tight. Hinges NOT cracked. Binding tight. Hinges NOT cracked. Book is in excellent condition with only a light stain at the base of the spine. There are a few tiny spots on the spine and two very small holes in the outer spine gutter. Pages clean and unmarked. 128 pages. Beige linen-covered slipcase with paper label bearing the title and the number of the limited edition has moderate wear mild sunning to the closed end and chipping around the edges of the label. Slipcase also has some spots on one side and a few dents on the other. This limited edition was issued at the same time as the first trade edition. Carefully packed shipped in a box.
