‎1837. By Boz. With Other Tales and Sketches by other authors from Bentley's Miscellany and The Library of Fiction. Philadelphia: Carey Lea and Blanchard 1837. Original drab boards with rose cloth spine and printed label. First Edition of this early collection of tales by various authors -- which constitutes one of Dickens's earliest American appearances in book form. According to Podeschi 2000 copies were printed in April 1837. This Dickens tale was not collected in an all-Dickens volume until ten years after his death -- in THE MUDFOG PAPERS 1880. Also included in this volume is "An Evening of Visits" by "J. Fennimore Cooper Esq. sic". This volume is in very good-plus condition closed tear in front free endpaper rose cloth faded as always slight rubbing of the spine label; one cannot encounter these Philadelphia volumes from the 1830s in much better condition. ‎"The Tuggs's at Ramsgate." In: THE TUGGS'S AT RAMSGATE by "Boz."‎

‎1837. Together with Other Tales by Distinguished Writers. Philadelphia: Carey Lea & Blanchard 1837. Original light grey-green boards with red cloth spine and printed label. First American Edition being a volume in the "Library of Fiction" limited to 1000 copies issued in January 1837. The volume consists of the title tale by Dickens followed by nine other tales by other writers. This is the only one of "Boz"'s tales that having appeared in a British periodical did not then appear in one of the two book series of SKETCHES BY BOZ see Smith I p. 15 note 2. Instead it appeared in the British "Library of Fiction" in April 1836 and was not included in SKETCHES BY BOZ until that title was issued in monthly parts Nov 1837 through June 1839. In America Carey Lea & Blanchard published SKETCHES BY BOZ second series a month or two after this -- not including "Tuggs's" -- and then combined "Tuggs's" into a reprint of that volume in June of the same year. This is a good-plus copy general soil and edge-wear notably to the rear joint label rubbed but still legible half of rear free endpaper missing. This is acceptable condition for a book that is so scarce in its original binding -- as these 1830s Philadelphia volumes were bound up using extremely delicate cheap materials. Podeschi Yale B1; Wilkins p. 11 reference to the "Select Library of Fiction". Housed in a clamshell case with leather label.

hardcover books‎

‎A CHILD'S HISTORY OF ENGLAND‎

‎1854. in Two Volumes. Boston: Jenks Hickling & Swan 1854. Original blind-stamped dark brown cloth with gilt-decorated spines. Early American edition just possibly the first complete one. Since Harper published the two volumes of its edition separately in March 1853 and in March 1854 so dated on the title pages it is considered to be the first American edition. The date in 1854 when these two Boston volumes were published is unknown so it is possible that this two-volume Boston edition came out earlier in 1854 than Harper's second volume. Jenks Hickling & Swan was a very "fluid" enterprise at the time such that their 1856 and 1857 two-volumes-in-one printings would be by Hickling Swan & Brown and their 1861 two-in-one printing would be by Swan Brewer & Tileston. This set is in very good-plus condition a few small holes in the cloth mainly at extremities or at joints; the gilt on the spines is unusually bright. Smith pp 116-119; Carr UTexas B500 in blue cloth; not cited by Podeschi. Provenance: both front free endpapers bear not only a contemporary signature but also the penciled signature of Dickens bibliographer Walter Smith; in fact this very copy is the one pictured on pages 117 and 118 of his book. unknown books‎

‎A Child's History of England in 3 vols.‎

‎London: Bradbury & Evans 1854. First edition. Fine. A Fine copy in original cloth with publisher's marbled edges and endpapers. Slight bit of sunning to spines but overall in beautiful unsophisticated condition. Collation and issue points conforming to Smith. Bookplates of two previous owners to front pastedowns of each. Internally clean and unmarked. Housed in a custom quarter morocco slipcase with chemise. A superior copy accompanied by an early James F. Drake description.

As the only book Dickens wrote specifically for children it occupies a unique place in his' oeuvre. "Dickens' intention for the book was made manifest in the dedication at the beginning of the first volume to his 'own dear children: Whom I hope it may help bye-and-bye to read with interest larger and better books on the same subject.' This makes the purpose clear. Dickens did not intend the book to supplant or rival those books by Keightley or Macaulay that preceded it. The book rather is intended by Dickens as an exciting or interesting study of the subject which will whet his children's -- and other children's -- appetites for English history and is designed to act as a springboard to discovery" Tearle. Thus while Dickens doesn't break new ground in uncovering or analyzing history he uses his novelistic abilities to make past figures feel more real more exciting and more present and to cast long-ago events as relevant to life in his own time. ‎A Christmas Carol‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1843. 3rd edition. Hardcover. Near fine. Bound in publisher's original red orange cloth with blind stamped covers and front cover and spine stamped in gilt. Four hand-colored plates by John Leech and four black and white wood engravings by W. J. Linton. A Christmas Carol has had an involved publishing history much to the delight of bibliographical detectives. According to John Eckel it was publishedon December 19th 1843 and sold 6000 copies on the first day. Before the end of the year eleven days later it was in the third edition with the combined number of copies of the second and third editions being estimated at only two to three thousand copies. This means that the second and third editions were at least two to three times scarcer than the first although not as complicated with the three states and trial copies that distinguished the first edition. During the haste of the early stages of production Dickens was trying to determine exactly how he wanted the book to appear and experimented with the color of end papers with red blue green and yellow eventually settling on yellow. On the title page he experimented with red green and blue eventually settling on red and blue as his preference. There were many textual errors corrected mostly in the second edition although not entirely. Binding variants were yet another issue. This copy has the title page printed in red and blue with the words "Third Edition" printed in blue. The end papers are yellow. This copy has the heading "Stave I" which was eventually changed to "Stave One." An error on page 49 line 2 was uncorrected remaining so in the third edition. It involved "and-bye ways" the hyphen being misplaced.

Chapman and Hall hardcover books‎

‎New York: Pocket Books 1939. Hard Cover. Very Good/No Jacket. Brazelton Julian. Collector's Edition. Lacks publisher's pamphlet. Light general wear. 1939 Hard Cover. We have more books available by this author!. 217 pp. "A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost Story of Christmas commonly known as A Christmas Carol is a novella by Charles Dickens first published in London by Chapman & Hall in 1843 and illustrated by John Leech. A Christmas Carol recounts the story of Ebenezer Scrooge an elderly miser who is visited by the ghost of his former business partner Jacob Marley and the spirits of Christmas Past Present and Yet to Come. After their visits Scrooge is transformed into a kinder gentler man. Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol during a period when the British were exploring and re-evaluating past Christmas traditions including carols and newer customs such as Christmas trees. He was influenced by the experiences of his own youth and by the Christmas stories of other authors including Washington Irving and Douglas Jerrold. Dickens had written three Christmas stories prior to the novella and was inspired following a visit to the Field Lane Ragged School one of several establishments for London's street children. The treatment of the poor and the ability of a selfish man to redeem himself by transforming into a more sympathetic character are the key themes of the story. There is discussion among academics as to whether this is a fully secular story or if it is a Christian allegory. Published on 19 December the first edition sold out by Christmas Eve; by the end of 1844 thirteen editions had been released. Most critics reviewed the novella favourably. The story was illicitly copied in January 1844; Dickens took legal action against the publishers who went bankrupt further reducing Dickens's small profits from the publication. He went on to write four other Christmas stories in subsequent years. In 1849 he began public readings of the story which proved so successful he undertook 127 further performances until 1870 the year of his death. A Christmas Carol has never been out of print and has been translated into several languages; the story has been adapted many times for film stage opera and other media. A Christmas Carol captured the zeitgeist of the mid-Victorian revival of the Christmas holiday. Dickens had acknowledged the influence of the modern Western observance of Christmas and later inspired several aspects of Christmas including family gatherings seasonal food and drink dancing games and a festive generosity of spirit."--Wikipedia Pocket Books hardcover books‎

‎A Christmas Carol. In Prose. Being a Ghost story of Christmas‎

‎Philadelphia: Carey & Hart 1844. First American edition. Small 8vo illustrated with 8 plates after the originals by John Leech a hand-colored frontispiece three There is a hand colored frontispiece of Mr. Fezziwig's ball three colored plates that are lithographed by P. S. Duval and four black-and-white original brown cloth decorated and lettered in blind and gilt on the front cover and spine and in blind only on rear cover by J. C. Russell Binder. First American edition of Dickens' most popular work. replicating the first English edition the American edition was printed by "C. Sherman printer" as noted on the verso of the title-page. Carey & Hart's American publication was a piracy published in blatant disregard to Dickens' impassioned plea for international copyright protection during his tour of America in 1843. The present copy is in the rare gift binding stamped on the front cover with the binder's name unlike in the ordinary bindings. Edgar & Vail p. 21; Gimbel a80; McGuire Collection 31; Wilkins p. 38; Suzzanet Collection p. 190 item 78 the ordinary binding only. a short 1/8 inch closed tear at the top of the spine slight foxing to endpapers otherwise a remarkably fine copy of this edition far scarcer than the English edition. Enclosed in a red half-morocco folding box.

Carey & Hart hardcover books‎

‎A Complete Set of the Nine Extra Christmas Numbers of ALL THE YEAR ROUND‎

‎1859. London: Office of All The Year Round / Chapman & Hall 1859-1867. In nine volumes. Original self-wrappers first four and blue printed wrappers last five -- as issued.

First Editions of all nine "Extra Christmas Numbers" of this periodical that Charles Dickens founded and edited for its nine years of existence. Previously he had likewise founded Household Words which likewise lasted nine years -- and which has nine Extra Christmas Numbers as well. In addition to editing these tales Dickens also wrote a portion of them -- specifically per Eckel: Christmas 1859: THE HAUNTED HOUSE. Dickens wrote "The Mortals in the House" "The Ghost in Master B's Room" and "The Ghost in the Corner Room" as well as most of the other opening paragraphs. Christmas 1860: A MESSAGE FROM THE SEA. Dickens wrote Chapters I II and V plus passages in the others; the rest is by Wilkie Collins. Christmas 1861: TOM TIDDLER'S GROUND. Dickens wrote Chapters I VI and VII. Christmas 1862: SOMEBODY'S LUGGAGE. Dickens wrote "His Leaving It Til Called For" "His Boots" "His Brown-Paper Parcel" "His Wonderful End" plus part of "His Umbrella." Christmas 1863: MRS. LIRRIPER'S LODGINGS. Dickens wrote Chapters I and VII. Christmas 1864: MRS. LIRRIPER'S LEGACY. Dickens again wrote Chapters I and VII. Christmas 1865: DR. MARIGOLD'S PRESCRIPTIONS. Dickens wrote Chapters I VI and VIII. Christmas 1866: MUGBY JUNCTION. Dickens wrote "Barbox Brothers" "Barbox Brothers and Co." "Main Line" and "No. 1 Branch Line." Christmas 1867: NO THOROUGHFARE. Dickens wrote the Overture Act III plus parts of Act I and Act IV; Wilkie Collins wrote the rest. As for condition all nine issues are near-fine the self-wrappers of the first four have some minor expert restoration; the latter five's blue wrappers are just about fine except for some small ink-drops on the fifth; the leaves of the 1864 and 1867 issues are unopened. It is very tough to assemble all nine of these in this condition. Podeschi Yale E11 E13-E20. Housed in a handsome though lightly scuffed full-morocco case with inner chemise. unknown books‎

‎A CURIOUS DANCE ROUND A CURIOUS TREE‎

‎1860. London: St. Luke's Hospital 1860. Original pale pink wrappers. First Edition second and usual issue -- with the final paragraph in bold not like the rest of the text with the wrapper pink not mauve -- though all are today faded with the front cover title followed by a comma not by a period and with the front cover border decorative only at the corners not all 'round. Dickens describes the wretched conditions inside St. Luke's Hospital "established in 1751 for the treatment and care of lunatics" and in particular the "very sad and touching spectacle" of the annual Christmas Ball there dancing around the Christmas tree. He actually wrote the original piece in 1852 at which time it appeared in his Household Words Dickens's authorship was questioned until 1913 when the original manuscript -- in his hand -- turned up. It is here published in book form for the first time eight years later when Dickens gave permission for the hospital to use it as a fundraising appeal. The hospital added two items to update the piece: an article about the 1860 Ball from the "Times" plus a brief article "Contrast between 1852 and 1860" in which the hospital asserts that many of the deficiencies cited by Dickens have since been addressed. The results of the initial mailing were not good -- which is why for this second issue the final paragraph the actual appeal was highlighted in bold. This is a fine copy of this very fragile item with scarcely any wear soil or foxing; as usual the pink wrappers have faded. Tipped to a corner of the inside front wrapper is an old but hyperbolic catalogue description. As with almost all copies there is a vertical crease because the booklet was folded vertically when the fundraising appeal was mailed out in narrow envelopes. Uncommon in this condition. Podeschi Yale B216 second copy; Carr U of Texas B465; Eckel pp 188-191. Housed in a cloth clamshell case lined with felt.

hardcover books‎

‎1860. the very scarce first issue London: St. Luke's Hospital 1860. Original pale mauve wrappers. First Edition first issue -- with the final paragraph in the same type as the rest of the text and not in bold type with the wrapper mauve and not pink -- though all are today faded with the front cover title followed by a period not by a comma and with the front cover border decorative on all sides not just at the corners.
