Nice autograph twist to this copy: In 1983 BBC produced a television miniseries version with British actor JOHN GLOVER born 1935 playing Paul Dombey Sr. Tipped to inner flyleaf is a fine heavy stock 5" X 3" card signed large and bold by him in black ballpoint dated by him 17 December 1969 at upper right. London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. In the primary cloth First edition bound from the original parts in the publisher's primary cloth binding. The novel is "now recognized as one of the greatest of all his works. It is also the first one to have an explicitly contemporary setting" ODNB. Following issue in parts from September 1846 to March 1848 Bradbury and Evans issued the novel in book form in the present cloth. In the 19th number of the part issue a slip advertised the novel ready for delivery on 12 April at £1 1s. in cloth or £1 4s. 6d in half morocco. The slip goes on to note "Subscribers desirous of having their copies bound in a similar style can have them done by Messrs. Chapman & Hall 186 Strand or through their Booksellers at the following prices:- Whole bound morocco gilt edges 6s. 6d. Half bound marble leaves 4s. 6d. In cloth lettered 1s. 6d". This copy represents an owner of the parts making use of these binding services with the characteristic stab-holes in the gutter where unstitched from the wrappers. At such a reduced price 1s. 6d compared to £1 1s for a new copy in cloth it is evident why an owner of a complete set in parts would prefer having them bound rather than purchasing a new book-form copy. For Dickens's novels the publisher kept a stock of first edition sheets and bound up copies and issued them over time as demand required. So too owners of the parts could make use of the binding services long after publication. Changes in the cloth design over time allow the binding to be dated and a primary binding to be identified. Smith noted this binding style as a variant but incorrectly identified a binding with a chain design as the primary - the chain design was in fact introduced by Chapman and Hall in the 1860s after they acquired remaining first edition sheets from Bradbury and Evans. Similar bindings with a chain design can be seen in Chapman and Hall's Dickens publications of the 1860s see Kremers p. 249. Kremers has subsequently identified this design which he dubs "marigold" as the primary binding. "Marigold" is unique to Dombey and Son. Copies of the novel were subsequently bound into the "lineal-globe" cloth in the 1850s with a central arabesque on the covers which is the primary binding of Bleak House 1853 and Little Dorrit 1857 and the "chain" cloth in the 1860s as stated above; these are secondary bindings. The primary "marigold" binding has two variants of blocking with ornamentation on the inner frame as here and without; the variant with ornamentation is presumed by Kremers to be the earlier. The spine lettering also has two variants indiscriminate with the blocking variants the base lettered either "London 1848" or "London" only as here; the absence of the date is presumed by Kremers to be secondary state. Demy octavo. Frontispiece vignette title and 38 plates by Hablot Knight Browne Phiz; plate 35 being the first published example of a "dark plate". Original green diaper cloth Kremers' "marigold" primary spine lettered in gilt spine and covers with elaborate design in blind cream endpapers. Expertly recased with neat repair at spine ends and joints spine and extremities a little sunned slight stain to front cover and ring stain to rear some foxing as usual plates browned and stained at foot. The work "has a sense of the numinous is more profoundly touched by the sense of last things than any of Dickens' previous novels. Dombey and Son is "now recognized as one of the greatest of all his works. It is also the first one to have an explicitly contemporary setting" ODNB. The novel is further noted for containing "the first published example of a so-called dark plate which was created by a machine process that tinted the etched plate and heightened its black-and-white contrast. The one dark plate in Dombey and Son is "On the Dark Road" p. 547. The smooth blending of light and shadow on this illustration vividly contrasts it with the other illustrations in the novel and is a fine example of the dark plate process" Smith. The technique was later put to use for ten plates in Bleak House and eight in Little Dorrit. Octavo 220 x 140 mm. Etched frontispiece vignette title page and 38 plates by Hablot Knight Browne Phiz. Complete with half-title. Near-contemporary green half calf by Tout spine with raised bands compartments tooled in gilt marbled sides ruled in gilt marbled and gilt endpapers top edge gilt green silk bookmarker. With 15 wrappers from the original monthly parts bound in at rear. Contemporary ownership inscription of one E. C. Murray dated 1886 to a binder's blank contemporary newspaper clipping containing an article on Dickensian names in the London Directory pasted below further signs of ownership to wrappers. Spine sunned a couple of small scuffs to sides front joint superficially split but firm very occasional and mainly marginal foxing to contents plates generally bright a few small marks otherwise clean. Dickens' telling tale of father and son father and daughter - when the fifth instalment appeared Thackeray - himself in the middle of serialising "Vanity Fair" - exclaimed "There's no writing against such power as this - no one has a chance! Read that chapter describing young Paul's death: it is unsurpassed - it is stupendous". This copy exhibits the dropped "if" on p.426 - a point of no proven significance any more than all the other errors and minor variations said to indicate a mythical "first issue" - in particular the depiction of Captain Cuttle's hook on the wrong arm in the title-page vignette. There are no copies depicting it on the correct arm. See the "Not Peevish" post on the "Bookhunter on Safari" blog December 20th 2013. Demy 8vo 210 x 131mm. xvi624pp. Etched frontispiece extra-title and thirty-eight plates by "Phiz" H. K. Browne. Part XIV is of a mixed issue: "if" is missing from line 9 p. 426 the page number is present on p. 431 as usual;p. 582 the last line has no full stop. <p>The Charles Dickens Edition 545 pages with eight illustrations.<br /><br />A very nice contemporary undated copy of Dickens's classic published between 1867 and 1879 Chapman and Hall published some undated editions during that period. Very good condition with some foxing on illustrations and a little rubbing on edges hinges heel and head of spine. All pages are tight clean and unmarked with very slight age-darkening; binding tight completely intact; some slight bumping of corners.</p> Chapman and Hall hardcover
