From the library of a famous Dickens bibliographer First edition the copy of the bibliographer Walter Smith photographed and described in his bibliography of Dickens and inscribed on the front free endpaper in pencil "purchased from Harry Levinson Walter E. Smith". The book is "a collection of eleven sketches plus an 'urgent remonstrance' and a conclusion archly ridiculing contemporary types in response to the announcement by Queen Victoria of her intention to marry Prince Albert. the sketches were not collected in any edition of Dickens's works during his lifetime" Schlicke p. 546. It was the final in a series of sketches - Sketches of Young Ladies was published by Edward Caswell in 1837 which Dickens followed with Sketches of Young Gentlemen in 1838. Octavo. There are no authors mentioned on the title page of this volume however Charles Dickens wrote Young Couples and Young Gentlemen and Edward Caswell wrote Young Ladies. These were written and originally published individually. Now bound together in one volume. Green bevel edged cloth boards with very nice title and decorations in gold red and black. Corners and spine ends frayed. Light soil and edge wear. Brown endpapers soiled. Partial label with ink notations on inside paste down. Hinges cracked front and rear binding is still tight. Rear endpaper vhas 3 inch piece missing from lower corner. Fore edge soil. Occasional foxing to text. Illustrated by Phiz a pseudonym of Hablet Knight Brown. Londion: Chapman and Hall 1840 1840. Three quarter blue leather over marbled paper covered boards. Raised spine decorated in gilt. This slim volume was orginally issued in fragile pictorial grey-green wrappers which are now very scarce. The present binding is by Blackwell with new marbled endpapers to match paper on covers and bound without ads and half- title as per usual. All edges gilt 6 illustrations by "Phiz" Hablot Knight Browne. But for very mild incidental rubbing to heel of backstrip a very fine copy with text free from foxing and plates very clean. Inside front cover exhibits book plate of previous owner. This was the "second collection of 'humerous' papers by Dickens" as Eckel writes the first being "Sketches of Young Gentlemen" published two years earlier in 1838. 1855. at the Theatre Royal Drury Lane Wednesday June 27 1855. London: Effingham Wilson 1855. Original printed self-wrappers.<br/> <br/> First Edition of this speech Dickens gave to the Administrative Reform Association. Dickens was a founding member of this organization that lambasted the government for its indifference to the plight of the common man. Dickens was unable to be present when Austen Henry Layard addressed a meeting at Drury Lane on June 20th but he was entirely in accord with what Layard said. The evidence of government blue books Layard charged revealed "records of inefficiency records of indifference to suffering records of ignorance records of obstinacy" that were a shame to the nation. The Civil Service was grossly overstaffed with men busy making work for each other. Lord Palmerston personally he denounced for an attitude of levity toward the sufferings of the people. Stung by the attack Lord Palmerston retorted with a sneer about "the private theatricals at Drury Lane." And Dickens fired with indignation determined that such a creature "as this Lord Palmerston" must have it rung "into his soul or what stands for it that the time for Dandy insolence is gone for ever." At a second Drury Lane gathering on the 27th. Johnson It is said that the mood Dickens exhibited giving this address mirrored the mood of the novel he was then writing -- NOBODY'S FAULT the name was changed just before publication to LITTLE DORRIT. This copy properly reads "eighteen hundred" on the first page of text which means that it is not the very first and very scarce issue; however this copy does not have the printer Rickerby mentioned on the title page -- his name was added to only the latest issues. In our experience this mixed issue is the one usually encountered -- though any issue in original wrappers is quite uncommon. Just a bit of soil on the blank rear cover otherwise this copy is fine.
