Engraved frontispiece title and 38 plates including the first example of a 'dark plate' and the first use of horizontal plates by Hablot K. Browne with tissue guards preserved. Bound from the parts with stab-holes visible at gutter in contemporary cloth: bluish-green cloth the covers with wide gilt panel smooth spine gilt-decorated and -titled pale yellow endpapers all edges gilt. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM IN AN APPARENTLY BESPOKE CONTEMPORARY CLOTH BINDING. The present binding is not mentioned by Smith: the two variants he describes are both decorated in blind not with the richly-gilt panels found on the present copy. With the following issue points: frontispiece with hook on Captain Cuttle's left arm "bird's-eye" not hyphenated on p. 61 p. xv with no page number for frontispiece and vignette and with all of the errors detailed by Smith as earliest issue except for those on pp. 220 336 and 431. Part XV with 10 diary leaves in the Letts Son & Steer ad. With 40 inserted plates by Hablot K. Brown Phiz who also designed the green wrappers. Spines are expertly renewed on parts I VII XVI and perhaps a few others. Light soiling to wraps of some parts; neat owner name on front wrap of part XII. With 40 plates by Phiz; plate 35 being the first published example of a "dark plate". Booklabel John K. Bindloss Annesdale Eccles and bookseller's embossed stamp Hale & Roworth Manchester to front free endpaper. Spine recoloured hinges just starting some light browning and offsetting to plates. A very good copy. First edition in book form following publication in serial form from September 1846 to March 1848 of the novel "now recognized as one of the greatest of all his works. It is also the first one to have an explicitly contemporary setting" ODNB. The cloth is a secondary binding - for all the Dickens titles the publishers retained first edition sheets and bound them up over the years as demand required. In this instance the design of the cloth matches that of the primary cloth of Bleak House published in 1853 determining it was bound then or thereafter either to match the design of Dickens's more recent novels or else simply reflecting that designs had changed. At any rate Dombey in this secondary binding is much scarcer than in the primary binding which itself is by no means common. Smith I 8.
