The only two points not found are both only found in "Some copies" pg 230 not missing the 2; Page 620 "received". In the primary binding variant with "MDCCCLIII" stamped in gilt on the foot of the spine. But unlike Smith's variant mentioned this current copy is bound with the half-title. Octavo 8 x 5 inches; 217 x 140 mm. i-viiviii-xxixii-xivxvxvi 12-624. With forty engraved plates including the frontispiece and engraved title. Bound with half-title. With a note in Dickens' hand tipped in on front free endpaper reading "Bleak House and The East Wind."<br> <br> Original publisher's green fine diaper-grain cloth spine lettered in gilt covers blindstamped according to the primary stamping pattern and with variant "MDCCCLIII" in gilt at foot of the spine. Yellow coated endpapers. Edges uncut. Spine a bit sunned. Corners and head and tail of spine a bit bumped and some light chipping to head and tail of spine. Back outer joint at top of spine with a small repair to cloth. A tiny split to top front of outer spine joint. Cloth on spine a bit wrinkled. Binding slightly skewed. Plates a bit foxed and toned. Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell<br> <br> With the note in Dickens' hand tipped in to the front free endpaper reading "Bleak House and The East Wind." "The wind blowing in the east is a constant point of reference for Mr. John Jarndyce one of the novel's central characters and a beacon of social good. He deploys the phrase when his world is threatend by disorder or when he witnesses broader injustices. Easterly winds after all were believed to carry dirt and disease and were considered a real threat in Victorian Britain. Given the novel's preoccupation with physical environments and how these relate to individual and public health this small comments is in fact incredibly charged with meaning." Sotheby's<br> <br> "In Bleak House for the first time society is seen as an absurdity an irrelevance almost a madness. A dark force from which the real people must escape in order to create another society of their own. Dickens had been preparing for this novel all his life and despite the calamities. which had helped to provoke it in the first place . was even happy while he was writing it. It might even be said that Bleak House cured the very malaise which was responsible for its composition" Ackroyd 649-50.<br> <br> Smith Dickens I 10.<br> <br> HBS 69008.<br> <br> $7500. Bleak House
London: Bradbury & Evans 1853. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First Edition. Hardcover. Formerly owned by Oliver Sacks unsigned. Illustrated with an engraved title page and frontispiece alongside a further 40 plates. Illustrated by Hablot Knight Browne known by his pen name "Phiz" an English illustrator who contributed his work to ten of Charles Dickens' books. The novel was first published in serial form between March 1852 and September 1853. "Writing at the height of his powers Dickens adopts a virtuoso form of double narration and the novel has since the middle of the twentieth century been widely acclaimed as his greatest work" ODNB. Of note is the inclusion of ten dark plates a new mode of illustration particularly fitting to the novel.<br /> From the library of Dr. Oliver Sacks the renowned neurologist author and educator. DICKENS, Charles (1812-1870), [BROWNE, Hablot Knight, illustrator]
Bleak House
London: Bradbury and Evans 1853. Crime Fiction FIRST EDITION FIRST ISSUE. Octavo 22 x 15cm pp.xvi; 624 2. Typographical errors present in the first issue: p.19 line 6 'elgble'; p.209 line 23 'chair' instead of 'hair; and p.275 line 22 'counsinship' instead of 'cousinship'. Lacks the half-title. With 40 engraved illustrations by H.K. Browne including a frontispiece and vignette title page. Brown half morocco marbled paper over boards four raised bands gilt titles and trim marbled edges and endpapers. Discreet ownership to pastedown 1950. Text leaves clean browning to margins of plates as usual especially title and frontispiece. Paper sides worn extremities rubbed. Very good. Although many of Dickens most famous works are crawling with crime it is just this title that can be firmly placed in the murder mystery category. 'Bleak House' is essentially a classic whodunit professionally solved which became only the second entry after Poe's 'Tales' in the Haycraft-Queen cornerstone list of crime fiction. Dickens returned to crime fiction for his highly-rated final story the 'Mystery of Edwin Drood' but this was unfinished and the case unsolved. Within 'Bleak House' the author experiments with dual narrators and the story ranges from the dark and filthy Victorian slums to the landed aristocracy; Inspector Bucket is one of the earliest detectives to appear in fiction and was probably based on C.K. Field of the recently formed Scotland Yard. An essential mystery novel. London: Bradbury and Evans, 1853 unknown
