A very nice unrestored copy.<br /> <br /> Bleak House is the ninth novel by Charles Dickens first serialized between March 1852 and September 1853. It is one of Dickens's most intricate works with numerous characters and interwoven subplots centered on the infamous case of Jarndyce and Jarndyce a long-running legal dispute in the Court of Chancery over conflicting wills. The case drags on for years devastating the lives of many involved.<br /> <br /> The narrative structure of Bleak House is unique featuring a dual perspective: part of the story is told by Esther Summerson the novel's heroine in the first person while the other part is narrated by an omniscient third-person narrator. This approach adds both a personal and societal dimension to the storytelling giving readers intimate access to Esther's experiences alongside broader societal commentary.<br /> <br /> Dickens drew inspiration from real-life legal cases particularly Thellusson v Woodford a case about a contested will that dragged on for decades beginning in 1797 and not concluding until 1859. Although some legal professionals at the time criticized Dickens's portrayal of the Court of Chancery as exaggerated Bleak House played a role in raising public awareness about the inefficiencies of the legal system. Front hinge is starting with a 2 inch section at crown having split. Calf shows toning on front board at top. Gilt tooling is fading in places. Text block is luxuriously gilt to all edges A.E.G. Lovely marbled endpapers. Frontispiece Half Title and Title Leaves have a faint vertical stain affecting an inch or so strip near fore edge for the top half of the leaves. Text is unmarked. In a lovely example of the publisher's full purple morocco deluxe binding. All edges gilt yellow-coated end papers. In Near Fine unrestored condition with just light to moderate foxing throughout but generally an exceptional survivor. <br /> <br /> One of Dickens' finest novels the action in Bleak House revolves around a never-ending set of related Chancery Court cases to resolve the inheritance of a considerable estate. Dickens turns his pen to a biting condemnation of the system and the need for reform which shouldn't surprise the Dickens scholar. A complex novel and filled with subplots it engages and titillates the reader from start to finish. Noted by some for Inspector Bucket's prominent role in investigating a murder which earned it a spot on the Haycraft-Queen cornerstone list of detective fiction the novel is also memorable for its complex representation of femininity: "There's more to Esther than simple good nature. Lacking a few of the advertisements and slips as always usual chipping and curling to the edges minor foxing to plates otherwise a very good set of all 20 parts with all the text and plates intact and unscathed. Some parts signed "Todd" in ink. Full red morocco pull-off case lettered in gilt. A very good set.<br /> <br /> § First edition in the original parts. "Between the publication of David Copperfield and the writing of Bleak House Dickens had established a weekly journal which after much discussion he called Household Words. he had been writing largely for this new venture this including his "Child's History of England" which ran serial. The result was that when he fairly got started with Bleak House he fell ill several times. In a letter he confessed that he was overworked. The new novel was an attack in the abuses of Chancery. An interesting feature is Dickens's defense of the theory of spontaneous combustion in the preface of the book" Eckel 78. Hatton & Cleaver 275-304. unknown

London March 1852-September 1853: Bradbury and Evans. First Edition. H. K. Browne Phiz. In the original monthly parts 20 parts in 19 in the original green printed wrappers. ALL wrappers are correct. ALL the ads slips and Advertisers called for by Hatton & Cleaver are present. FIRST ISSUE OF THE TEXT uncorrected thus: in part I page 19 line 6 with "elgble" - part VII page 209 line 23 with "chair" - part IX page 275 line 22 with "counsinship." ANNOTATED in part II on the final page of text as we have seen in other copies: "CP" meaning "clean and perfect" and with the initials of bibliographer Thomas Hatton "TH" on the same page. Please note that "The Village Pastor" a small booklet present here is often missing because it was removed to make use of the subscription form which appears on the inside of rear wrapper. Plates in part V show light off-setting. Plates in parts VI X XV XVI XVII and XVIII are lightly tanned at edges not affecting illustrations; all other plates are very good to fine. Tissue guards are in place. Several spines have been expertly renewed. Subscriber name on front wrap of parts XVI and XVII. Bookseller ticket on front wrap of part XII. Octavo i-viiviii-xxixii-xivxvxvi 12-624. Housed in a handsome red quarter-leather slipcase with chemise.
