Cloth boards heavily age soiled with shelf wear and edge wear including staining rubbing scuffing and fading to cloth. Fading to gilt at front panels with fading more heavily at spines obscuring titling. Bumps and fraying to corners and spine tips. Spines square. Vol. V and Vol. VI cracked at hinges else intact. Bindings else sound. Stains and fading to text block edges. All frontispiece illustrations intact with tissue guard. Vol. IV tissue guard has sustained two small closed tears. Additionally in Vol. IV pp.736 and pp.1121 illustration plates appear to be missing. All else illustration plates are accounted for and well-preserved. Interiors age-toned throughout. Pencil and color pencil markings to pastedowns and endpapers with sparse staining and foxing to front matters. Texts free of markings. <p>There are no dates in the volumes I examined. 1970 as stated by other dealers seems about right. The volumes have certainly never been read. This edition states "Centenary Edition" but the binding is nowhere close to any other "Centenary Edition". The embllishments on spines and fronts and the "gilt " titles are bright and fresh. All vols have a silk page marker. Postage for 36 books will be far in excess of Biblio's quote which might just cover only 2 books. In near fine condition. A very sharp set. Founded in 1922 in London by Francis Meynell his second wife Vera Mendel and their mutual friend David Garnett The Nonesuch Press was established in the basement of Garnett's bookshop in Soho. Nonesuch was unusual among private presses in that it used a small hand press to design books and then had them printed by commercial printers. Three of the volumes although uniform in size color binding publisher etc do not state they are part of the New Century Library collection. These are books III and XVI and XVIII. These are Oliver Twist A Tale of Two Cities and Sketches by Boz. These three are identical to the others aside from what was stated earlier. Bindings are great on all 18 volumes. Some chipping at spine and faint stains in text but an attractive copy of a very scarce collection of stories including Dickens' `The Lamplighter's Story' and `Public Life of Mr. Tulrumble Once Mayor of Mudfog' and stories by Thomas Moore Douglas Jerrold and W. H. Ainsworth. There was no English edition of this collection. OCLC locates only five copies bindings unknown. This crudely printed pamphlet has more the appearance of a sloppy proof: quads and spacers have worked up between words on several pages including the title-page! and the running title on one page has been crudely cut-cancelled. This copy has the "1" missing from the date on the title-page as noted by McCutcheon. Not in Podeschi Carr or Wilkins nor in the McGuire collection. McCutcheon 79. Edgar & Vail p. 23. unknown
