Bound from the parts with many of the of sheets in the earliest state of the text. 'Dark' plate pp.547 in fine order. Contemporary half navy calf extra gilt to spine marbled sides edges and endpapers. Moderate spotting to plates some offset to tissue guards spotting to frontispiece and vignette title. Binding is gently used and pleasingly aged. An attractive near fine copy. The following first issue points are present: In the title-page vignette Capt. Cuttle's hook is erroneously on his left arm; p.xv no page entry for the frontispiece and vignette and no quotation marks around "the Party" line 2; p.14 ten lines up "aint" has no apostrophe; p.26 line 11 has "fidgetty"; on p.40 l.16-17 "shewed" and "shew" instead of "showed" and "show"; p.284 fifth and sixth lines from the bottom "Delight" instead of "Joy"; p.324 p.582 the last line has no full stop. Other points are noted in the later state. Ex-libris James Hale Bates North American travel writer 1826-1906; engraved bookplate to pastedown executed by Edwin Davis French 1851-1906 in 1894. Octavo 20 parts in 19 original wrappers with 40 etchings by Halbot Knight Brown containing all advertisements as issued. A mixed state set with the following points: Part I with no ads on inner front wrapper rear wrapper blank all other parts with called for ads on wrappers; twelve-line errata slip present in Part V "delight" for "joy" twice on page 284; "Captain" on last line of page 324;  page 426 “if†is not present on line 9; on page 431 the page number is not present which marks it as the earliest issue. In very good condition. Housed in a custom cloth chemise and slipcase. Scarce and desirable. Dombey and Son "was well received by its readers and is considered to be the first novel that reflects Dickens's artistic maturity… Dickens told his first biographer 'It was to do with Pride what its predecessor Martin Chuzzlewit has done with Selfishness" Schlicke 280. The work "has a sense of the numinous is more profoundly touched by the sense of last things than any of Dickens' previous novels. It is larger in conception so that human life is seen in terms of its beginning and its end so that grief and forgiveness become more powerful forces within it… Dickens is aware of its status as art and provides here a simulacrum of human life touched by majesty and purpose" Ackroyd 526. Illustrated with a frontispiece title page vignette and 38 full page plates by Halbot K. Browne. With the eight line errata leaf mentioning 6 errors and the twelve line errata slip. A very good copy the binding square and firm with minor rubbing to the extremities and mild fading of the spine. The contents are spotted to the plates particularly the frontispiece and illustrated title page but are otherwise clean throughout. Dombey and Son originally appeared in 20 numbers bound in 19 monthly parts between October 1846 and April 1848. The novel was first published in book form on April 12 1848. And this is the first time Browne etched some of his horizontal plates. Frontispiece and vignette title have some scattered foxing other plates mostly have browning to upper margins with occasional spots of foxing. Text is clean and bright. Bound in full green morocco double ruled gilt spine has changed to an even tone of brown raised bands with compartment fully decorated and lettered in gilt top edge gilt marbled endpapers From the library of E.G. Lacks the half-title. Contains most first issue points but 'Birds-Eye' is hyphenated in the Contents. Contemporary tan half calf with raised bands gilt titles to dark green label gilt ruling to spine and marbled paper over boards. All edges speckled red with brown endpapers. Heavy spotting to frontispiece and vignette title otherwise moderate spotting to plates with some offsetting to facing leaves. Moderate general wear to binding. Very good. This landmark novel weaves together a number of stories concerning a self-important merchant and his two children. Later half-calf and marbled paper over boards from the parts raised bands spine in six panels title label to second panel contrasting author label to third remaining panels gilt with volute corner pieces flower head centre piece with small roundels to top bottom left and right marbled endpapers. Spine faded slightly rubbed to extremities. Internally the plates often have the usual browning to edges but generally fairly bright and clean. Bound from the original parts several of the plates twenty are bound in twice several covers from the parts are bound in at the rear with a couple of the Dombey Advertisers. Extra-illustrated with both sets of the portraits twelve portraits of the characters again illustrated by Phiz with the original wrappers bound in to rear. Bound by Palmer Howe and Co. of Manchester. London: Bradbury and Evans 1848. First Edition in book form. Very near fine in in a late 19th century binding of 3/4 pebbled black leather covered boards over marbled paper with five raised bands on the spine with gilt text and decorations in the compartments marbled end pages and the top edge of the text block is gilt. There is a minor area of 1/2" by 1/8" at the upper edge of the spine area where the leather is rubbed and the paper edge at the lower edges of the boards is rubbed through in one small area. The hinges are tight and strong. An octavo measuring 8 9/16" tall by 5 1/2" deep containing 624 pages. Tipped-in at the second free end page and before the fly title page is the front wrapper from #3 of the original part. Illustrated with 38 engraved plates and a frontispiece by H. K. Browne "Phiz". An eight line errata page follows the list of illustrations. The word "Captain is spelled correctly on the last line of page 324. Eckel p74 Bradbury and Evans hardcover

Orr. indicates that Wiley is of the late firm of Wiley and Putnam; this volume comprises pp 249-865 starting with Chapter XVII ends with LVII; black leather with some gilt stamping there is a frontis portrait of Dickens and a title page which makes no mention of volumes; there is no list of plates; leather-covered boards show a little soiling and rubbing to extremities minor crackling front hinge is partially cracked but still fairly solid also cracking at title page & pp. 845 & 865 last signature is partially loose but still holding; tear to title page; pencil writing on first blank page foxing & toning throughout some staining child's pencil scribblings on a few pages and at least one plate; all plates appear to be present. 08 <br/> <br/> John Wiley hardcover
