Volumes I-IV & XIII Office 16 Wellington Street and some with New York Dix and Edwards Vols. VI & VII New York: McElbrath and Barker Vol. VIII etc. 20 vols. 8vo. Household Words was considerably more popular in England than America and its publishing history in America is "almost absolutely dark as is the whole subject of periodical printing and 'arrangements' . The 1850's were years of copyright agitation in America and certainly no legally protective arrangements were possible to the English publishers before the journal was discontinued in 1859. And it is not surprising that the course of Household Words was not so brilliant in American as was that of its successor All the Year Round . It was partially a local work and not quite so interesting to an America as to an English reader; it had changed publishers too often; there was no legitimate arrangement between the English proprietors and the American publishers; it was sold at too high a price; it had been published by inexperienced people and therefore had not received proper publicity and promotion; and its lack of pictorial illustration made it unpopular with the masses" Buckler William E. "'Household Words' in America" in Papers of the Bibliographical Society of America vol. 45 pp. 160-66.

Household Words was published every Wednesday from March 1850 to May 1859. unknown‎

‎DICKENS, Charles‎

‎Hunted Down.‎

‎London: printed by C. Whiting; Philadelphia: T. B. Peterson and Brothers; London: John Camden Hotten 1860; 1861; 1870. Dickens's short story Hunted Down in three of its first appearances: the first British edition in serial form the first British edition in book form and the first US edition in book form housed together in a custom-made box. Hunted Down is based on the case of the notorious poisoner Thomas Wainewright whom Dickens met following his arrest in 1837. Queen's Quorum describes the story as Dickens's "most important contribution to the detective short story. a fascinating tale of realistic detection still technically rewarding to all students of the genre. the story transforms real life into 'exquisite' Victorian melodrama". Hunted Down first appeared in the New York Ledger in September 1859. It was first published in Britain in All the Year Round in two weekly issues 4 and 11 August 1860. It was first published in book form in the US by T. B. Peterson in 1861 along with other Dickens stories and in Britain by John Camden Hotten in 1870 as a stand-alone story. 3 copies ATYR: 2 numbers unbound; US: original brown cloth spine lettered in gilt covers panelled and lettered in blind; UK: original wrappers printed in black housed together in blue cloth solander box. Recent bookplate of collector Peter Russell mounted to inside cover of box contemporary pencilled signature to each number of All The Year Round. Slight wear to spines of book form copies All The Year Round numbers a little spotted and leaves loosening. Overall very good. Queen's Quorum pp. 16-17; Eckel p. 198 Eckel incorrectly gives the date of All the Year Round appearance as April rather than August. hardcover‎

‎DICKENS, CHARLES‎

‎IS SHE HIS WIFE OR SOMETHING SINGULAR‎

‎Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1877. First American Edition. 123 x 85 mm. 4 3/4 x 3 1/4". 80 pp. 4 leaves ads.
VERY PLEASING GREEN MOROCCO BY RIVIERE & SONS stamp-signed on front turn-in covers framed with gilt rules densely tooled cornerpieces with floral sprigs on a stippled ground raised bands spine panels lavishly gilt with a starburst of floral tools emanating from a central medallion all on a stippled ground gilt lettering turn-ins gilt ruled with floral garlands at the corners all edges gilt original very well-preserved gilt cloth wrappers bound in at rear. Half-title with ink inscription: "Wm H. Drake / July 4 '83." Eckel pp.159-61; Podeschi B-62. Spine just slightly sunned though difficult to tell because of all the gilt but a very fine copy in a gleaming unworn binding and with only the most trivial imperfections internally.

Attractively bound by a major workshop this is Dickens' third stage play a one-act farce heavy on confusion and coincidence focusing on jealousy and misunderstandings between two married couples. Its stage run in 1837 coincided with a printed version of the play but Eckel says that copies of this first edition no longer exist. The publisher of our edition James Osgood had acquired the sole surviving copy of the 1837 edition which was subsequently lost in a fire in 1879. There was also a London reprint of the play published circa 1873 which Eckel tells us exists in only three known copies the same number being verified by OCLC. Given all this the present Boston imprint is the first obtainable edition of this work. Our copy was handsomely bound by the celebrated Riviere firm established by Robert Riviere in Bath in 1829. He later set up shop as in London in 1840; in 1881 he took his grandson Percival Calkin into partnership at which time the firm became known as Riviere & Son. The bindery continued to do business until 1939 when it was acquired by George Bayntun of Bath. Rivere's work has consistently been of the highest standard throughout its long years of operation and the present volume is no exception. James R. Osgood and Company unknown‎

‎IS SHE HIS WIFE‎

‎Dickens Charles. IS SHE HIS WIFE Boston: James R. Osgood 1877. First American edition first state of binding with correct monogram. Original terra cotta cloth gilt. Mild rubbing at spine ends a couple of stray marks but a very good bright copy of this scarce "comic burletta." In 1876 James T. Fields acquired the only known copy of the original 1837 edition and used it to produce this edition; his unique copy was destroyed when his library burned in December 1879. A British reprint itself rarely seen appeared in 1883. This volume was part of Osgood's 102 volume vest-pocket series which included Twain's rare A TRUE STORY and several Hawthorne Emerson and Lowell titles that are also seldom seen. Books in this series were published only in terra cotta or green cloth with no priority between the two colors and the print runs ran from 500 to 1250 copies per title. Kitton MINOR WRITINGS OF CHARLES DICKENS pp. 207-10. Eckel p. 159. Podeschi B62. hardcover‎

Sixteenmo. 80pp.

Original brown cloth decoratively blocked in black and blind lettered in gilt and black. Off-white endpapers printed in red. A fine bright copy. Housed in a custom maroon cloth slipcase black morocco label on spine gilt-stamped.

Apparently no copy exists of the first 1837 edition of this play Dickens' third published play first performed 6 March 1837; this is the only published work by Dickens to which this situation applies. The Gimbel collection has playbills for performances on 13 March and 6 April 1837. Eckel mentions that the only known copy of this edition was at Osgood for their 1877 reprint and was subsequently destroyed in a fire there in 1879. A census in Eckel finds only three extant copies of the 1873 British reprint. Thus the Osgood reprint of 1877 is the first obtainable printing of this piece.

The Gimbel collection does have a copy of the 1873 English probably the one mentioned by Eckel as lacking the back wrapper; the extensive McQuire collection of American Dickens did not have a copy; Vander Poel had both green and brick cloth variants of the 1877 as did Gimbel.

Eckel 159ff.
