First American edition published in cloth. 16mo 6 ½" x 4 ¼"; 1-9 10-96pp; teal colored cloth over board blind stamped decorative borders gilt-stamped lettering and bells hanging from a roof with goblins atop; pale yellow endpapers; gift inscription in pencil dated 1858; 6 fly-leaves; engraved frontispiece and pictorial half-title; 10 engraved plates; age-toning of paper darkening of text block from acidic ink; a few pencil marks4 of the rear fly-leaves have penciled graffiti and contemporary drawings of women; binding is tight; fading of boards chipping at head and tail of spine bumped corners light staining; very good minus. Charles Dickens 1812-1870 was an English novelist perhaps most famous for his story A Christmas Carol. This is the second book in his series of five Christmas novellas all with strong moral and social messages often involving the disparity between the poor and rich classes. First published in London by Chapman and Hall in 1845. There was a reading of this new story by Dickens to a select audience of friends on December 2 1844. This is the first American edition to be published in cloth with illustrations. Lea and Blanchard unknown

Missing ffep front board repaired with tape where hinge cracked inside; outside still attached. Owner's name inked on front and rear pastedowns and title page; one on a rear end paper in pencil. Four newspaper clippings pasted on to end papers one dealing with Dickens' writing method and one on Dickens' 'dummy' books each creating shadows on opposite pages. Variable scattered foxing throughout with many of the pages toned only in the text block while the illustrated pages have mostly escaped this fate. Perhaps 8 pages with pencil lines in margins. Page edges marred by a small scrape. Some tiny pinholes from pg. 95 through to endpapers. Overall still readable though no longer lovely. INSIDE: 12 captivating full page B&W illustrations by D. Maclinse R. Doyle J. Leech and C. Stanfield. Written and published in 1844 a year after A Christmas Carol as another contracted Christmas story and conceived while in Genoa Italy upon hearing the crash and clamor of the church bells there Dickens determined to write The Chimes as striking a 'blow for the poor' according to his first biographer John Forster. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard 1845. Original Cloth. Original fine rib-grain white cloth stamped in gilt and in blind; pale yellow endpapers; binder's septuple flyleaves at front and back. Cloth is darkened and age soiled with rear board showing several darker spots and backstrip chipped at top and bottom. Interior foxed and text pages browned. Twelve full page illustrations on whiter stock than text and very clean with virtually no foxing to images. Though the illustrations are essentially the same as the those which adorned the English edition several have been modified to include additional material. The artists are D. Maclish 2 R. Doyle 4 J. Leech 5 and C. Stanfielf 1. A very scarce imprint usually found in blue cloth of the first American edition of Dickens's second Christmas book. Quite soiled with moderate wear to cloth else a good soild copy. First Edition. Cloth. Good. 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Lea and Blanchard Hardcover
