Cloth is darkened and age soiled with rear board showing several darker spots and backstrip chipped at top and bottom. Interior foxed and text pages browned. Twelve full page illustrations on whiter stock than text and very clean with virtually no foxing to images. Though the illustrations are essentially the same as the those which adorned the English edition several have been modified to include additional material. The artists are D. Maclish 2 R. Doyle 4 J. Leech 5 and C. Stanfielf 1. A very scarce imprint usually found in blue cloth of the first American edition of Dickens's second Christmas book. It was published on December 19 and sold so well there were seven editions by the following May. The Chimes followed in December 1844 and three more books appeared in 1845 1846 and 1848 two of the title page dates follow the then-common practice of dating a book published in November or December with the coming year.<br /> <p>The enduring appeal of Dickens’ Christmas stories lies in his unmatched ability to combine sentimentality with melancholy or righteous fury a balancing act of light and dark. Writing "in company" Dickens composed the opening and closing pieces as a frame for stories supplied by his staff writers. The serials continued the tradition of Dickens's five Christmas books of the 1840s. The formula that Dickens used from 1852 to 1866 involved gathering a group of disparate literary individuals who would while away Christmas Eve by recounting various stories in the manner of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. Dickens contributed many stories himself including "A Christmas Tree" "The Mortals in the House" and "The Ghost in Master B's Room". Among the other pieces are "No Thoroughfare" jointly by Dickens and Wilkie Collins and Elizabeth Gaskell's "The Ghost in the Garden Room" and "How the First Floor went to Crowley Castle". Dickens edited the papers consecutively from 1850 until his death in 1870. 18 parts octavo comprising 13 unbound parts and 5 wire-stitched parts in original blue wrappers all as issued. "A Christmas Carol" the immortal story of how ghostly visitations finally inject the miserly Scrooge with the Christmas spirit is called by Eckels "the greatest Christmas book from the pen of any man . . . . Artistically it was a pronounced success and from a literary aspect it has delighted millions of readers." The work is not only finely written but its sentiments had great appeal for Victorian taste.<br /> <br /> Our copy has all of the text first issue points listed in Smith and Eckel but those bibliographers disagree as to whether yellow Smith or green Eckel endpapers have priority. William Todd distrusted all internal issue points beyond uncorrected text including color of the endpapers. He believed the most reliable way to determine priority of issue was by studying the location of the gilt wreath on the cover which was stamped by a single machine. He says "This desideratum is a single point one encompassing all the others and if it is to be a sign of issue the one last appearing in the course of manufacture." The brass stamp with the cover design shifted to the left and developed imperfections as time went on so Todd assigned priority to volumes with the most distance 14-15 mm. between the right edge of the blind-stamped border on the left side of the cover and the left-most extremity of the gilt wreath and with a perfect "D" in the author's name within that wreath. By these criteria our copy is a first issue. As an added bonus our volume contains a letter written and flamboyantly signed by Dickens to Messrs. Curry and Co. concerning newspaper piracy of his works by "wholesale robbers."<br /> <br /> The warm reception of "A Christmas Carol" prompted Dickens to launch a series of four further Christmas books. "The Chimes" was described by the author to his friend and biographer John Foster as striking "a blow for the poor" while "The Cricket on the Hearth" presented domestic life in the ideal Victorian home. "The Battle of Life" is a love story with a happy ending a Victorian rom-com for the holidays and "The Haunted Man and the Ghost's Bargain" finds another grumpy old man learning about the spirit of Christmas from a ghost. The illustrations for these works were done by some of the most popular artists of the day including those whose letters are bound into volumes here: Richard Doyle 1824-83 who created the first cover and the masthead for "Punch"; John Leech 1817-54 well known for his political cartoons and humorous illustrations for "Punch"; Daniel Maclise 1806-70 whose professional life was devoted primarily to painting especially portraits and historical scenes; and Sir John Tenniel 1820-1914 illustrator of "Alice in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking Glass."<br /> <br /> This set was splendidly bound by the masters of the Cosway binding: Riviere Stonehouse and Currie. The "Cosway" style of binding with painted miniatures inlaid in handsome morocco apparently originated with the London bookselling firm of Henry Sotheran about 1909 the year G. C. Williamson's book entitled "Richard Cosway" was remaindered by Sotheran and presumably given this special decorative treatment. The name "Cosway" then was used to describe any book so treated whatever its subject. Admirable miniatures on Cosway bindings were executed by Caroline Billin Currie 1849-1940 from 1910 until her death creating such paintings for Sotheran's usually as here from designs by J. H. Stonehouse for bindings executed by Riviere. The portraits created by Miss Currie for this work show a maturing Dickens from youthful idealism to successful middle age to gray eminence and the festive decoration of the bindings virtually shouts "Merry Christmas" from the bookshelf. The portraits gracing Cosway-style bindings vary greatly in their level of achievement; Miss Currie's paintings are universally acknowledged as the very best. A perfectly serviceable set complete in fifteen 15 volumes of The Collected Works of Charles Dickens. Scarce in the trade in this state and condition. Printed for them by Trow's Printing and Bookbinding of New York. Eastily a Fair condition set but bordering on Good inside and out with still-tight bindings mostly clean interiors complete of pagination and still standing handsomely on the shelf. A still attractive exemplar of an edition published in the heyday of mid-late 19th-century bindings by a publisher that had a short but consequential publishing run: Belford Clarke & Company of Chicago and New York. Bound in short hardcover format with marbled paper over boards half-leather over tips and spine raised bands to spines gilt lettered titles and author's name there and marbled page edges all around if rubbed and faded. Somewhat improbably all but one of the pastedowns are intact. Moderate toning to pages some but not a lot of foxing and discoloration a few folded and creased pages. Scuffing to joints and edges some bruising to and scuffing of tips and to the five raised bands but all hinges sturdy and interiors clean if toned with a few dog-eared pages a torn page here and there some scattered pencil marks here and there etc. Four blind-stamped navigator's wheels to spines gilt-stamped titles and author's name. Else a solid still attractive set and with sewn-in head-bands. "Sketches by Boz" in the form of black-and-white steel engravings and with illustrations including full-page plates by F. Barnard J. Mahoney F.A. Fraser and S. Green. The set is dated on neither title page nor copyright page but the dual imprint of Chicago and New York on title pages shows that the set was produced likely in the 1880s as the publisher operated from 1879 to 1892 by which time the publisher was no longer operational. The web-site entry for Jules Verne books published by them on julesverne dot ca forward slash vernebooks forward slash Publishers jules-verne_BelfordClarke dot etc. shows that in March of 1879 Belfords sic Clarke & Co. "advertised for agents in Toronto at 60 York St. By August 1879 the firm had left Toronto and had settled in Chicago" having failed to secure a footing in Toronto and there in March of 1880 "a new outfit Belford Clarke & Co. was operating as a publisher" and set up shop also in New York. Their run ended in receivership in 1889 and later in effect bankruptcy with the company splitting into New York The Belford Company and Chicago branches Belford Clarke & Company.
