‎THE CHIMES‎

‎London: Hodder and Stoughton 1913. Fine in very good plus jacket. Thomson-illustrated edition of the Dickens classic - in the scarce original dust jacket - with "the cheeriest design conceivable calculated to fill the spectator with all the jollity and delight of the Christmas spirit only to look at it" Spielman and Jerrold. Dickens's second Christmas novella was first published in 1844 following up on the success of A CHRISTMAS CAROL the previous year: the official start of a series rather than the feverish one-off that Dickens had original expected A CHRISTMAS CAROL to be. The success of THE CHIMES itself ensured the formula of the Christmas novellas ultimately running to five. The highly sought Thomson edition is a favorite among collectors especially so in the original dust jacket not usually seen. 8.25'' x 6''. Original red pictorial cloth stamped in gilt and blind. In original color pictorial dust jacket flaps blank. Grey pictorial endpapers. Illustrated by Thomson with 7 tipped-in color plates on heavy brown paper with printed frames and captions. vi 138 pages. Contemporary bookseller ticket to rear pastedown. Jacket toned with tiny chip and short closed tears at spine head long closed tear to front panel skillfully repaired with archival tape to verso. Book with only trace edgewear and usual offsetting of brown paper illustration leaves. Firm hinges gilt bright. Hodder and Stoughton unknown‎

‎The chimes: A Goblin Story or some bells that rang an old year out and a new year in.‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall 1845. 8 175pp 1. With an additional engraved title page forming half of a preliminary engraved illustration across two pages and several further in-text illustrations. Original publisher's blind-stamped gilt-decorated red cloth boards. Rubbed and marked with damp-staining to boards bumping to head and foot of spine upper board toned. Inked gift inscription addressed to 'Mary H. Dendy with best love from John Dec 30th 1868' to FFEP. Embossed library stamp of the W.H. Smith & Son. Library Strand to head of FFEP with unused write-in book-label pasted to verso of the same. The second of Dickens' perennially popular Christmas books published two years after the first appearance of A Christmas Carol 1843. The novella controversial for its 'radical' sympathy for the poor makes references to the contemporary judgement on Mary Furley an impoverished young woman who had been convicted of infanticide and sentenced to hang in 1844. In fact Furley's child had tragically drowned during her own suicide attempt induced by her immense desire to escape the harrowing conditions of the workhouse for good. . Thirteenth edition. 8vo.
