London: Chapman and Hall Published in the 1860's as part of the "Charles Dickens Edition" or "Original Edition" set Martin Chuzzlewit is in its original brown sandcloth binding with a blindstamped rule around the edges. "Martin Chuzzlewit." short swollen rule "CHARLES DICKENS" all caps "ILLUSTRATED" ORIGINAL EDITION" all caps appear on the spine in gilt. Original chocolate brown endpapers. 9" tall x 5.5" wide. The title page is identical to that shown in Smith p. 64 without a publication date. This book is in an early revision state with most of the internal flaws and points listed by Smith with a few corrections. pp. 66-67. Full page vignette engraving protective tissue engraved title title page with copyright on verso Dedication preface vii-viii Contents ix-xii List of Plates xiii-xiv Dickens's Errata 10 items xv 624 pp. blank endpaper colored endpaper. Fraying top ad bottom of spine mild skewing. Boards rubbed with scrape marks to rear board. Expected occasional foxing. All the structural components are solid. John Carter Taste & Technique in Book Collecting quoted in Smith p. ix said "many of Dickens's cloth-bound novels are hardly ever found in fine condition.Cloth cases provided for his usually ample volumes were poor quality so that the collector may find Martin Chuzzlewit and David Copperfield as difficult and Pickwick more difficult to secure in fine original cloth than in the parts." In the 1860's Dickens revised and edited his books releasing the so-called "Charles Dickens Edition" or "Original Edition" of which this is part. Dickens' "adventure" classic and without doubt his most exciting novel and one he loved well himself in which the Ironic Wit sets forth a plot now beloved to novelists and moviemakers alike - the rich old dude who doesn't trust any of his money-grubbing kin and must find a way to select the proper heir. Date at foot of spine. The spine has mellowed to brown which is quite common with old green leather. This first edition in book form contains 39 etchings by Hablot K. Brown Phiz and a steel-engraved frontispiece portrait after the painting by David Maclise. The engraved frontispiece is in the first state with Chapman and Hall at the bottom other plates do not have the imprint and are termed second state. Most of the textual errors as noted in Smith have not been corrected although a few have been changed. Three plates are misbound: "Newman Noggs Leaves the Ladies" is found at p.166 "Nicholas Attracted by the Mention of His Sister's Name" at .308 and "The Children at Their Cousin's Grave" at p. 223. For eighty-five years the manuscript was guarded as a precious family secret and it was handed down from one relative to the next. When Dickens died in 1870 it was left to his sister-in-law Georgina Hogarth. From there it fell to Dickens's son Sir Henry Fielding Dickens with the admonition that it should not be published while any child of Dickens lived. Just before the 1933 holidays Sir Henry then the only living child of Dickens died leaving his father's manuscript to his wife and children. He also bequeathed to them the right to make the decision to publish The Life of Our Lord. By majority vote Sir Henry's widow and children decided to publish the book in London.
