Handsomely bound and extra illustrated First edition a superb extra illustrated copy with the scarce suites of plates by Thomas Sibson and Frederick William Pailthorpe - neither of which are in the celebrated Suzannet and Vander Poel collections - in a particularly fine binding by Rivière whose work was renowned for "the quality of the materials the forwarding and in the delicacy of the tooling" ODNB. This copy includes the complete suite of Sketches of Expeditions from the Pickwick Club a series of ten unofficial illustrations first published in 1838 to accompany some of the "most striking scenes" of the novel. Also included is Pailthorpe's 1882 series 24 Illustrations to the Pickwick Club all hand-coloured described by Grego as "thoroughly in harmony with the first series of plates" by Phiz and Seymour p. 450. All of the original plates are also present in their early states as called for with no titles or imprints. The Pickwick Papers Charles Dickens's first novel transformed the obscure journalist into England's most famous writer within months. The first monthly instalment was issued in an edition of 1000 copies in April 1836. The work became a publishing sensation after the introduction of Sam Weller in chapter 10 the fourth instalment issued in July 1836 after which the publishers reprinted the earlier instalments so that readers could catch up. The serial was originally intended to be primarily a vehicle for the cartoons of Robert Seymour until he died by suicide after the first number was published. Robert William Buss then took over but he was inexperienced in steel engraving and had to be replaced. The final choice Hablot Knight Browne "Phiz" was to be Dickens's chosen collaborator for the next two decades. Octavo 270 x 129 mm. 112 engraved plates including etched vignette title page "Weller" no priority frontispiece 41 plates by Robert Seymour and Hablot Knight Browne Phiz with 2 additional plates by R. W. Buss. Smith to front pastedown and of Jeremy and Penny Martin to front free endpaper and faded ownership inscription of one Alex F. Little to engraved title page. Four wide gilt ruled raised bands gilt decorated compartments and titles in gilt to the spine. Gilt decorated board edges and inner dentelles. All edges gilt. Bound from the parts. Engraved frontispiece vignette title and 41 plates 43 in total as called for. First state of engraved title page Veller and the two suppressed plates by R. W. Buss present facing pages 69 and 74. All 7 Seymour plates are present as called for and the Phiz plates are in the earliest state page numbers without publisher's imprint. A very good copy indeed the binding square and firm with minor wear to the extremities small nick without loss to the upper left corner of the front board. Tiny retailer's label 'G. Simms Manchester' to the upper left corner of the front pastedown the ownership name of 'L. Garnett' in ink to the front endpaper and a pencilled name 'C. Garnett Esq' to the head of the title page. The plates are spotted and darkened at the edges to various degrees; the text pages with just the odd spot of foxing to the margins are otherwise clean throughout. An attractive entirely unsophisticated example of Dickens' first novel in the earliest state containing the suppressed Buss plates and six of the seven Hatton and Cleaver first issue points within the text that of p.25 noted as present in only one copy. First published in 19 monthly parts over 20 months between March 1836 and October 1837. Colophon at rear notes limitation of 1500 numbered copies this #1132 signed by illustrator Austen. This copy bears a fine publisher's letter: Tipped to inner flyleaf is a meaty Typed Letter Signed from LEC founder George Macy 1900-56: 1p 8½" X 11" New York NY 6 June 1932. Addressed to Mortimer H. Hess. Near fine. Paper clip imprint at left margin; single original horizontal light fold. On Limited Editions Club letterhead Macy discusses the firm's fourth series. In part: "Here at the office we are in a dither of excitement over it. For it is obvious that the continued success of this Club has been due to the plan which enabled us to furnish our members with worth-while fine books at low prices. And now in this fourth series that plan enables us to furnish our members with five fine books containing more than one thousand pages each and two fine books printed completely by hand -- at the same prices!" Forty-three engraved plates by Seymour and Phiz and the two Buss plates which Dickens requested to be removed in subsequent printings on pages 69 and 74 frontispiece and title vignette with thirty-two extra plates by Onwhyn. In near fine condition with toning throughout. Accompanied by an autographed check by Dickens tipped in on the third free endpaper and drawn on Coutts Bank payable to "Young Ladies Quarters" for twenty-five pounds London fourth March 1862.
