This appeared in parts from May 1849 ending with a double number in November 1850. It then appeared as here in book form. This copy has not been bound from the parts and therefore includes neither the wrappers nor advertisements. . . . . . . Frontispiece vignette title-page and thirty-eight additional inserted plates the majority with tissue inserts as issued. Original blue-green illustrated paper wrappers. Several backstrips chipped at head and foot; some light soiling wear at hinges; some parts skewed. In excellent condition an unrestored example of Dickens' classic work. Includes the scarce insert "Lett's diaries" advertisement at end of Part VIII which unfolds to a 26 inches with ten specimen diary leaves. According to Hatton & Cleaver this is a "particularly scarce" insert. Hatton & Cleaver pp. 253-272. Housed in a custom half morocco and chemise box. In near fine condition an unrestored example of Dickens' classic work which is virtually complete with all preliminary advertisements with the exception of the slips after plates parts 9 13 14 and 16; all front advertisements in part 11 and the "Household Words" advertisement in part 15. With all of the rear advertisements with the exception of "The Theory of Musical Composition" "Illustrated Weekly Journal" and "Penny Maps" in part 15 and all advertisements in parts 2 and 8. Housed in two custom full morocco and chemise boxes. From the library of Peggy and Steve Fossett with their bookplate to the pastedown. Published in the 1860's as part of the "Charles Dickens Edition" or "Original Edition" set this is a printing of David Copperfield from the original plates 1850 in its original brown sandcloth also called "diapercloth" binding with a blindstamped rule around the edges. "David Copperfield". short swollen rule "Dickens" all caps "Illustrated Original Edition" appear on the spine in gilt. Original uncolored endpapers uniform with pages. 9" tall x 5.5" wide. This book is in an early revision state with most of the internal flaws and points listed by Smith pp. 76-77 corrected as follows: title page lists Chapman and Hall while all other references are to Bradbury & Evans in the book including the imprint at the foot of p. 624 and the imprint on iv; the errors on pp. 19 30 34 132 and 237 have been corrected. All other points are present Smith pp. 97-98. The book contains Dickens's errata sheet. This book was composed from the original edition with some errors corrected and then released by Chapman and Hall at a later date along with other matching volumes in a set called the "Original Edition" now called the "Charles Dickens Edition". This book is in very good condition. Boards are chipped top and bottom of spine; there is a small tear at the fold about 1/3 up from the bottom. The spine is lightly faded corners are bumped boards are lightly scuffed with some light foxing. All the structural components are solid. John Carter Taste & Technique in Book Collecting quoted in Smith p. ix said "many of Dickens's cloth-bound novels are hardly ever found in fine condition.Cloth cases provided for his usually ample volumes were poor quality so that the collector may find Martin Chuzzlewit and David Copperfield as difficult and Pickwick more difficult to secure in fine original cloth than in the parts." In the 1860's Dickens revised and edited his books releasing the so-called "Charles Dickens Edition" or "Original Edition" of which this is part. Oxford University Press used the Charles Dickens Edition as the authoritative version of Dickens on which to base their reprint of Dickens's works. This is an exceptional copy of David Copperfield in its original cloth unrepaired un-recased as published from Bradbury & Evans' first edition plates in the authoritative "Charles Dickens" or "Original Edition". Small octavo three volumes bound in three quarter morocco over marbled boards with gilt titles and tooling to the spine in six compartments within raised gilt bands frontispiece to each volume all edges red with illustrations by George Cruikshank. In very good condition bookplates to the front pastedown. The three-volume anthology originated by Dickens to benefit the widow and children of 28-year-old publisher John Macrone. In 1838 Dickens began soliciting submissions and wrote the Introduction rewrote his un-acted farce The Lamplighter altering the name to The Lamplighter's Story and edited the first two volumes. DIckens raised 450 pounds from this charitable publication for Macrone's widow. Other contributors included William Harrison Ainsworth Thomas Moore Leitch Ritchie and Agnes Strickland. London: Henry Colburn 1841. Thomas Hatton's copy First edition the copy of Dickens's bibliographer Thomas Hatton with his bookplate to the front pastedowns. This is a later issue without the incorrect "publisher young" on p. 3 of the introduction and with Palmer as the printer of both volumes. Charles Dickens edited the first two volumes of the work and wrote the introduction as well as The Lamplighter's Story. Proceeds from the sale of the work went to the widow of Dickens' first publisher John Macrone who had died penniless. 3 vols octavo. Engraved frontispiece to each vol. and 11 plates by George Cruikshank Hablot Knight Browne Phiz and R. J. Hammerton. Original green cloth spines lettered in gilt covers panelled in blind light yellow endpapers. Bookseller's ticket to front pastedown of vol. II early sketch of Dickens characters loosely inserted into vol. II. Spines a little sunned and nicked at ends cloth of vol. II slightly discoloured hinges of vol.
