Dickens Charles
Children's Stories from Dickens Re-told By His Grand-Daughter and Others Illustrated by: Frances Brundage Harold Copping The Baroness Orezy Willis Grey Edith Scannell & Major Giles; edited by Edric Vredenburg
London: Raphael Tuck & Sons. Very Good. 1907. Hardcover. 104 pages; Publisher's green cloth pictorial decoration in gilt on the front cover and spine beveled edges to the boards. Date is approximate. Minor wear to the binding with a short trifling tear at the edge of the rear free endpaper some tanning to the first and last leaves transfer from the paper of the endpapers and a black ink rectangle to a small portion of the title page effectively obscuring a single name. The first Tuck-published text with this title was issued about 1890 with 48 pages of letterpress text and 12 chromolithographed illustrations by Frances Brundage. By the time of the DIckens centenary in 1911 the Tuck firm published a more luxurious edition with a slightly altered title page naming the author's grandaughter: "Children's Stories from Dickens Re-told By His Grand-daughter Mary Angela Dickens and Others." London: Raphael Tuck & Sons 1911. Illustrated by Harold Copping. There was a special issue of this new and expanded Tuck edition issued in a numbered edition of 500 Copies signed by Dickens' Grand-Daughters with Dickens' Centenery stamp on upper pastedown -- in gilt- decorated red cloth all edges gilt. The book offerred here appears to have been issued by Tuck in the years between these two editions-- probably about 1907. The text had grown to 104 pages but the Tuck stock of the color plates appears to have been exhausted. So this copy was issued with the alteration to the title page mentioned above on which the first name of the list of illustrators contained in a border formed by a decorative shield was neatly and effectively blacked out. This was Frances Brundage -- the artist responsible for the colored plates not present in this copy. Frances Isabelle Lockwood Brundage 18541937 the daughter of the artist Rembrandt Lockwood -- was a mainstay of the firm of Raphael Tuck & Sons. She was responsible for a number of popular images depicting attractive and endearing children on postcards valentines calendars and other ephemera. As a book illustrator she became known for illustrated children's classics such as the novels of Louisa May Alcott Johanna Spyri and Robert Louis Stevenson and traditional literary collections such as The Arabian Nights and the stories of King Arthur and Robin Hood. In the case of Alcott the remarkable story is that the young artist sold her first professional work a sketch illustrating a poem by Louisa May Alcott to the author. Brundage was her married name -- Frances Lockwood married William Tyson Brundage in 1886 and worked prolifically under that name until her own death at 82 in 1937. Raphael Tuck founded his firm in 1866. The great international boom in postcards made Tuck and his heirs a great success. Many of the Tuck firm's charming chromolithographs were printed in the founders' native Germany. It may be that even before the difficulties created by the first World War it took time to restock color plates particularly those stocked from foreign printers. This issue with wonderful black and white plates and text illustrations by Harold Copping The Baroness Orezy Willis Grey Edith Scannell & Major Giles -- may have been prepared to clear out the remaining stock of sheets before the planned enlarged edition which Tuck was to issue in the centennary year of 1911. Or it may be that only a few copies of this issue were published by necessity without the colored chromolithographs. Either way it makes commercial sense that the firm would delete the name of one of their most popular artists whose fine work was temporarily not included in these few copies issued without her chromolithographs. A scarce Dickens "B" item -- not mentioned in OCLC etc. . Raphael Tuck & Sons hardcover

A near fine and partially uncut copy. Charles. Edmund. Brock 1870-1938 was a widely published English line artist and book illustrator who earned his first book commission at age twenty. He became a very successful illustrator best known for his line work initially in the tradition of Hugh Thomson but he was also a skilled colorist. Brock's work varied with the sort of story he was illustrating some of it refined and described as "sensitive to the delicate teacup-and-saucer primness and feminine outlook of the early Victorian novelists" while other work was "appreciative of the healthy boisterous thoroughly English characters" i.e. soldiers rustics and "horsey types." Other illustrations were grotesqueries drawn to amuse children looking at or reading storybooks.

London: J.M. Dent & Co., 1905 hardcover
