‎The Chimes‎

‎Hodder & Stoughton London No date. Edition Unstated. Hardcover Illustrated Cloth. Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Illustrator: Hugh Thomson. List of illustrations. Illustrated end pages showing Christmas bells against a gray coloured page. There are seven coloured illustrations tipped in by Hugh Thomson. Red coloured cloth covered boards with dark green coloured decorations and titles to the front panel with gilt coloured titles to the backstrip. A book set around a elderly "ticket porter" Trotty Veck who is filled with gloom at what he reads in the newspapers about crime and immorality. He wonders whether the working classes are simply wicked by nature. His daughter Meg and her fianc Richard want to get married but when they meet an pompous Alderman and a MP who dispenses alms in the manner of a paternal dictator Trotty feels that he and his people are worth nothing. That night he is woken by the local church bells and he goes up into the belfry and discovers the spirit of the bells who tell him that he died on the climb up and show him what will happen to his family and friends mostly unpleasant to show Trotty that far from being wicked mankind is built to strive for better things and will only fall when crushed beyond bearing. Softening and rubbing of the backstrip edges; rubbing of the book corners with the lower right-hand corner of the front panel trade and underlying board visible. Fading of the backstrip with some rubbing and marks to the book panels; stains to the rear panel and is a little erosion to the lower edge of the rear book edge. Tanning and foxing of the text block edges with patchy age toning of the pages: where the -tipped in plates have been placed the plate has saved the inner part of the page from being age toned please see photograph some browning and foxing of the first few and last few pages of the book. The first edition of this particular publication of this title was in 1913 unfortunately there is no publication data easily found. Size: 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. 4 5 1 137 1 pages. Please refer to accompanying picture s. Illustrator: Hugh Thomson. Quantity Available: 1. Category: Literature & Literary; Illustration; 19th century; Inventory No: 0129080. . When Trotty's spark dims and he blames himself and everyone else for his lot he is visited on New Year's Eve by some darkly humoured rather mischievous spirits. They help to restore his faith in a most unorthodox manner and show him that nobody is born evil but rather crime and poverty are only a part of the world we live in. 130 pages. Insured post. First Edition Thus. Hard Cover. Fine. Illus. by Rackham Arthur. 8vo - over 7 - 9" Tall. The Limited Editions Hardcover‎

‎THE CHIMES‎

‎1845. A Goblin Story of Some Bells that Rang an Old Year out and a New Year in. With Illustrations. Philadelphia: Lea and Blanchard 1845. Original blue-grey cloth decorated in gilt. First hardbound and fully-illustrated American edition -- preceded by only three days by E. Winchester's edition and by Harper's edition both of which were issued in wrappers and with one or no illustrations. "The L&B edition is almost an exact copy of the original English edition" with the same front cover decoration and with the same plates by John Leech Richard Doyle and others. The illustrations which in the English edition share pages with text were for this edition "extended" to occupy entire pages: "the work of the illustrations is very well done but it is doubtful if the changes have improved them any" quotes from Wilkins. This copy is bound in blue cloth; others are in yellowish-white or pink no priority. Curiously the binder's name "J.G. Russell Binder" appears in the lower margin of each cover's design. Condition is very good -- better than that externally as there is only minor soil and edge-wear. Unfortunately for the text pages a very cheap paper was employed such that today those leaves are heavily browned. This does not apply to the plates however which are quite white and bright. Smith pp 55-58 his illustrations are of THIS copy; Podeschi Yale A88; Wilkins p. 37. Provenance: penciled signature of bibliographer Walter Smith on the front endpaper where resides as well an inked 1851 gift inscription.

hardcover‎

‎Hesperus Press. New. A follow-up to A Christmas Carol this is the story of a poor ticket porter whose outlook is changed from despair to hope by the spirits of the chimes on New Year's Eve
As Trotty's working day as a lowly messenger draws to a close his daughter Meg arrives with her fiance Richard in tow and they proudly announce their wedding for the following day. This is cause for celebration although their happiness is tempered by the comments of an alderman and other well-off citizens on the rights of the poor to marry. During the night Trotty hears the chimes of a church bell and ventures out to climb the belltower. At the top he is greeted by goblins who tell him that he died during the climb and must now spend his time watching his friends and family live out their lives. What he witnesses makes for grim viewing and Totty finds himself attempting to rescue his daughter from the brink of destruction. He wakes as if from a dream to the bells chiming out the beginning of a new year and finds that no time has passed and it is New Year's Day. But as he sees his daughter cheerfully preparing for her wedding day he is baffled as to whether this is just a dream within a dream. Tackling familiar themes of redemption social injustice and family this is a story of hope and . 2015. TRADE PAPERBACK. Hesperus Press paperback‎
