Original moderate blue fine-diaper cloth spine lettered in gilt spine and covers stamped in blind pale yellow coated endpapers. Recent custom blue morocco-backed folding case. Title vignette and 3 wood-engraved vignettes in the text. The Suzannet copy with the engraved bookplate of Alain de Suzannet Sotheby's 22 Nov. 1971 lot 87 to J. E. Teale; subsequently resold at Sotheby's 1984. Rebacked with original spine laid down light toning to margins a very good copy. First edition presentation copy inscribed by the author at the head of the half-title "Thomas Beard Esquire From his old friend Charles Dickens Devonshire Terrace Nineteenth May 1846". The inscription is dated the day after publication. Thomas Beard 1807-1891 was almost the oldest of Dickens's friends and their friendship was uninterrupted until the novelist's death in 1870. Dickens joined Beard as a reporter on the Morning Chronicle in August 1834 through Beard's recommendation; Beard was best man at his wedding and godfather to his eldest son Letters of Charles Dickens eds. Housed in a custom red cloth solander box red morocco label. Wood-engraved title page vignette and three other vignettes by Samuel Palmer. Peeling bookseller's ticket to front pastedown. A couple of patches of trivial wear around joint ends light rubbing to spine lettering contents clean with light creasing to a few page extremities. A near-fine bright copy. First edition of Dickens's second travel book based on the travel letters he published in the Daily News 21 January-11 March 1846 describing his journey through France and sojourn in Italy in 1844-45. While preparing the book for the press he hit a snag: "Clarkson Stanfield had agreed to illustrate the text for Dickens but when he read those passages of the narrative in which Dickens satirises the excesses of Catholic devotion he resigned from the project. Stanfield was himself a prominent English Catholic after all as Dickens knew and he could scarcely be connected with a publication which treats his Church's ritual as little more than a parade of mummers. As usual Dickens went at once into action in order to find a substitute; fortunately and curiously he chose a young artist who then had no real reputation Samuel Palmer whose wonderful illustrations are not the least of the merits of Pictures from Italy in its final state" Peter Ackroyd Dickens 1990 pp. 491-92. First Complete American Edition issued as No. LXIII in Wiley & Putnam's "Library of Choice Reading" -- available either in wrappers on its own or bound in red cloth together with Mrs. Jameson's MEMOIRS AND ESSAYS as here. During 1846 seven letters from Dickens in Italy were published in The Daily News in London and in America Wiley & Putnam jumped on them and published them in two wrappered parts titled TRAVELLING LETTERS WRITTEN ON THE ROAD -- the only such book edition on either side of the Atlantic and extremely scarce today. Later that year Dickens polished up the letters and added considerably to their number creating the U.K. volume PICTURES FROM ITALY published on May 18th; Wiley & Putnam quickly issued this corresponding American edition on June 8th followed "a day or two" Smith later by William Colyer's edition. Condition of this copy is very good: the original endpapers are intact but there is some wear along the outer joints though the book is tight. Smith pp 77-80 including photographs of this copy; Podeschi Yale A100 listing only a copy in wrappers; Carr Texas B495 likewise; Wilkins p. 28. Hardcover. 4 p.l. 270 & 2 pages; First edition bound in a full deep tan morocco leather art binding four raised bands on the spine decorative stamping in blind on the spine and covers with the initials "MWY" stamped within a decorative diamond-shaped lozenge constructed of decorative tools in blind on the front cover and the date: "1924" stamped in the center of a matching lozenge on the rear cover. An interesting copy certainly a first edition in a handsome albeit worn binding which is more to the neo Georgian than the Victorian taste. There are hand-marbled endapers with paste-downs framed by extra-wide inner dentilles with decorative ruling in blind and round tools in the corners. The marbled endpapers are clearly not commercial but were likely made by the binder who has not signed this interesting binding -- unless the initials at the center of the front cover belong to the binder who may or may not have been the owner of this copy. There are broad and real headbands in alternating shades of white and red; all edges of the leaves are gilt. The binder has retained the original spine from the publisher's cloth binding -- now mounted to a sheet at the rear of the volume. Alas there is some wear now to this binding with cracking along the front outer hinge the board is still soundly attached on the cords a small chip at thecap and a longer chip at the bottom of the spine are now missing exposing a portion of each headband. There is rubbng to the edges of the raised bands the edges of the boards and the corners. But in all this remains an interesting and handsome binding in the craftsman style of the early years of the twentieth century. The copy is an example of the first edition retaining the half title and the ad leaf preceding it as well as the two pages of ads at the rear. Bibliographical understanding of the complex printing history of the issues of the two printings of this 1846 Dickens first edition have evolved since the 1911 publication of Eckel and even Smith and the Gimbel Collection catalogue from Yale seventy years later. The following are the points of issue of this copy: on the title page there is a comma after �Wood� in the fourth line of text; there is a full-stop tiny period after the printer�s imprint on p.270; the drop-head decorative title to the first page of text is set entirely in Black Letter; on p.271 in the advertisement for �The Cricket on the Hearth� the last line reads: �Twentieth Edition. In Foolscap 8vo price 5s.� Further on page 244 line 8 the �e� of the first �the� is printed too heavily and also slightly clogged but not battered by wear. It appears that this letter "e" becomes progressively battered during the printing run of this volume. If a prospective buyer knows of other points we will gladly respond to inquiries. . Dickens his wife Kate and her sister Georgina with the Dickens's five children and several servants left London by coach on July 2 1844 bound for Italy. After one month's stay in the Villa Pallavicino della Peschiere in Genoa where Dickens wrote The Chimes he and Kate left the children with Georgina and traveled south stopping first in Pisa and Florence. In Rome Dickens was captivated by the ruins practically overcome he later said by the sight of the Coliseum. They also visited Herculaneum and Pompeii making a perilous ascent to the rim of Vesuvius and peering into the "Hell of boiling fire below." Dickens published reports of his journey in the Daily News as a series of eight "Travelling Letters. Written on the Road." Pictures from Italy incorporating the letters with five chapters added appeared in book form on May 18 1846 but not before hitting a rather tortuous bump in the road: "Clarkson Stanfield had agreed to illustrate the text for Dickens but when he read those passages of the narrative in which Dickens satirises the excesses of Catholic devotion he resigned from the project. Stanfield was himself a prominent English Catholic after all as Dickens knew and he could scarcely be connected with a publication which treats his Church's ritual as little more than a parade of mummers. . . . As usual Dickens went at once into action in order to find a substitute; fortunately and curiously he chose a young artist who then had no real reputation Samuel Palmer whose wonderful illustrations are not the least of the merits of Pictures from Italy in its final state" Ackroyd Dickens pp. 491-92.
