New York: Harper & Brothers 1865. First US Edition . Hardcover. Good-. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall. See photos for condition details. Hardcover original brown cloth boards with gilt text on spine. Cloth is quite spotted and faded edges and corner show tearing and heavy bumping which is also affected the pages inside. Internal binding is good despite the bad corner bumps. No hinge cracks are present and text pages are secure. No signatures or bookplates no library markings. The only evidence of handwriting found is on the front end page where there are remnants of a price once penciled in the corner. The tissue guard for the frontispiece is even still present and attached. Pages are toned due to age and there is some light foxing. Rear of book contains two advertising pages. The first page of Our Mutual Friend states "Book I" all four "books" are bound in this copy which is printed in double column format. First US edition with frontispiece by Bobbitt - Hooper SC. Please note: newly all the pages have faint creasing in the upper outside corner because of the extent of the upper corner bump. <br/> <br/> Harper & Brothers hardcover

Original teal paper cover bound in back with the chipped-off bottom corner restored. The back board is slightly warped. Foxing on and around the plates. Otherwise text unmarked and binding secure. The leather is in beautiful condition unmarred by soiling or chafing. The first edition two volumes in one. Illustrated with black and white plates by Marcus Stone. A nice Mansell bound first book form edition of one of Charles Dickens' most popular novels with all of Marcus Stone's plates present. The first edition of this work in book form. The first issue with the three page postscript to the rear of Volume II and with 'Pricipal' for 'Principal' to Volume II page 115 14 lines up from the bottom. Issue points as stated by John C. Eckel in his 1913 publication 'The First Editions of the Writings of Charles Dickens'. Complete with two volumes bound in one.Bound by Mansell successor to Hayday.Half-title present to Volume I. 'Our Mutual Friend' was the last novel Charles Dickens completed before his death in 1870. It is a satire on society the plot following a young man who recently came into a fortune after his father dies who's body is then found in the Thames. The money then goes to the naïve employees of the late father.Volume I illustrated with a frontispiece engraved title page and nineteen plates.Volume II illustrated with a frontispiece and nineteen plates.All plates are present.Dickens is one of the most popular authors of the Victorian age. His novels show the grimy side of poverty and prosperity in Victorian England showing poor social conditions alongside repulsive characters.Illustrated by Marcus Stone an English painter who was an Associate of the Royal Academy.Bound without half-title to Volume II the slip bound before page 1 of Volume 1 and the publisher's adverts to the rear of Volume II.Bookplate of Francis Augustus Brooks to the front paste down with a wax seal to the bookplate. Brooks was an art collector corporate attorney and a railroad president. In a half crushed morocco binding by Mansell with marbled paper to the boards. Externally generally smart. A little rubbing to the spine joints and extremities with a little paper lifting to the extremities. Spine is a little faded. A few light marks to the boards and spine. Front hinge is starting but remains firm. Bookplate and bookseller's label to the front paste down. Internally firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. A couple of pencil lines to the margins. Prior owner's ink to page ix of Volume I and to the title page of Volume II. Very small tide mark to the margins of the frontispieces and a couple of other plates. Issued monthly from May 1864 to November 1865 in publisher's illustrated green paper wrappers. Wraps are generally in good condition with the minor exception of the first issue missing a small piece at the bottom corner; and the sixth issue has a marginal chip at the rear wrap. Forty woodcut plates by Marcus Stone. The pages are in very good condition and generally clean and unmarked. The first and final issues have minor occasional spotting. <br> Issues held in green cloth chemise. Handsome custom-made brown morocco slip case with gilt lettering. Some bumps edge wear to slip case. Cataloguer's note: We used Cleaver & Hatton's "A bibliography of the periodical works of Charles Dickens" 1933. All the novel's text is present. We collated the ads present and found: nos. 1-3 complete with all ads; no. 4: lacks two ads for Queen Insurance and Glenfield Starch; no. 5: lacks Glenfield Starch ad; no. 6: front ads on p. 3-14 and the rear ads 3-8 are lacking; no. 7 complete; no. 8: one slip and the first 4 pages of ads are lacking as well as the rear Norton Chamomile Pill ad leaf note: this ad is present in no. 4 also two leaves of Chapman and Hall's "List of New Books" are lacking; no. 9: the yellow slip proceeding the advertiser and the slip for the Albert Insurance Company are torn with partial loss Note: the Scottish Union Advertiser ad is present and a rare variant on cream-ribbed paper '. of 45 copies examined only two were seen of this paper.
