‎Sheet music: There’s a Charm in Spring‎

‎Philadelphia: A. Fiot 1855. Softcover. Very Good. Unknown edition likely a later printing. Folio. Single bifolium with a single-sheet-insert making six pages. Notched and worn along the spine from once being bound within an album soiling throughout and some light edgewear still a complete and very good copy. For voice and piano. The front cover states "As sung by Mr. Braham." Unlike most sheet music associated with Charles Dickens this song comes from an actual collaboration Dickens had with the composer John Hullah. This song is from their comic opera The Village Coquettes. The show premiered in 1836 and ran for 19 nights in London before moving to Edinburgh where it was performed under new direction. The reviews were less than favorable and over time Dickens grew to agree with them once stating that he "wouldn’t repeat his productions for a thousand pounds apiece" and he reportedly wished for his foray into theater The Village Coquettes and a piece called The Strange Gentleman to be forgotten completely F.G. Kitton. We know of two other editions of this song thought to be published around the same time but OCLC does not locate any physical holdings of this edition published by A. Fiot though they do record one digital holding and it appears to be equally scarce in the trade. A. Fiot unknown‎

‎Sketches by Boz.‎

‎
Dark green leather spine with gilt banding decoration and tile. Red marbled boards. All edges marbled to match

A truly lovely book Sketches by "Boz" Illustrative of Every-day Life and Every-day People commonly known as Sketches by Boz is a collection of short pieces Charles Dickens originally published in various newspapers and other periodicals between 1833 and 1836. They were re-issued in book form under their current title in February and August 1836 with illustrations by George Cruikshank. The first complete one volume edition appeared in 1839. The 56 sketches concern London scenes and people and the whole work is divided into four sections: "Our Parish" "Scenes" "Characters" and "Tales". The material in the first three sections consists of non-narrative pen-portraits but the last section comprises fictional stories. The sketch "Mr Minns and his Cousin" originally titled "A Dinner at Poplar Walk" was the first work of fiction Dickens ever published. It appeared in The Monthly Magazine in December 1833. Although Dickens continued to place pieces in that magazine none of them bore a signature until August 1834 when "The Boarding House" appeared under the strange penname "Boz". A verse in Bentley's Miscellany for March 1837 recalled the public's perplexity about this pseudonym: "Who the dickens 'Boz' could be Puzzled many a learned elf Till time unveiled the mystery And 'Boz' appeared as Dickens's self." Dickens took the pseudonym from a nickname he had given his younger brother Augustus whom he called "Moses" after a character in Oliver Goldsmith's The Vicar of Wakefield. This "being facetiously pronounced through the nose" became "Boses" which in turn was shortened to "Boz". The name remained coupled with "inimitable" until "Boz" eventually disappeared and Dickens became known as simply "The Inimitable". The name was originally pronounced /ˈboʊz/ but is now usually /ˈbɒz/. The popularity of Dickens's writings was enhanced by the regular inclusion of detailed illustrations to highlight key scenes and characters. Each sketch typically featured two black-and-white illustrations as well as an illustration for the wrapper. The images were created with wood engravings or metal etchings. Dickens worked closely with several illustrators during his career including George Cruikshank Hablot Knight Browne aka "Phiz" and John Leech. The accuracy of the illustrations was of the utmost importance to Dickens as the drawings portrayed the characters just as he envisioned them and gave readers valuable insights about the characters' personalities and motives as well as the plot. The earliest version of Sketches by Boz was published by John Macrone in two series: the first as a two-volume set in February 1836 just a month before the publication of the first number of The Pickwick Papers 1836–37 and then a "Second Series" in August 1836. After Dickens's fame skyrocketed he purchased the rights to the material from Macrone.
Chapman & Hall. hardcover‎

‎BOZ" [Pseud: DICKENS, Charles] [Illus: "Phiz" BROWN, Hablot Knight]‎

‎The Life and Adventures of Nicholas Nickleby Containing a Faithful Account of the Fortunes Misfortunes Uprisings Downfallings and Complete Career of the Nickleby Family In Original Parts‎

‎London: Chapman and Hall April 1838-October 1839. First Edition First Printing with first issue points as called for. 20 parts in 19. 23cm. Original powder blue illustrated paper wraps. 40 plates by "Phiz" as issued with twelve plates either lightly foxed or toned to some degree usually confined to the exposed margins. All parts strong and tight; soiling to the covers of part I with some light chipping to the fore-edge of the front wrap and a small corner of loss; small archival repairs to the rear wrap of part II lower front corner of part IV and spine of part VI soiling and repair to part X small repair to part XII with sections clipped from two of the ad inserts repair to spine of part XVI and the spine of the XIX/XX double issue; all other parts clean inside and out strong and very good or better. A handsome set of the first appearance of Nicholas Nickleby housed in a tailor made chemise and morocco spined solander box.

From a bibliographical standpoint the set conforms largely with Hatton & Cleaver; the first issue points are present as called for the Amesbury Patent Support fold-out is present all five of the "Hill's Wafers" samples being present in good order and with the publisher's imprints being where required on the plates.
Departures from Hatton & Cleaver's "perfect" collation as follows: in Part I the "Nickleby Advertiser" consists of only 6 pages rather than 12; Part IV the "Poor Man's Pill" ad insert is lacking; from Parts VII & VIII the Tyas "Heads of The People" advertisement slip is also absent; the Charles Tilt advert is absent from Part XI. Given the frenzy of activity and breakneck pace of publication a little non-conformity is perhaps to be expected.

A handsome example of Dickens' third novel to be published in parts containing not only the complete story but also offering the most complete vision of contemporary London provided by a blizzard of ephemera encompassing everything from cheap tea gold pocket watches and tickets overseas to commentary on current affairs upcoming publications and a complete cure for ringworm. Nickleby is the Dickens novel that opens the Victorian Age with the first two parts appearing in the weeks preceding Queen Victoria's coronation and the remainder spanning the first year of her reign with changes and developments necessarily reflected in the progress of the work in parts. Scarce thus. Chapman and Hall unknown‎

‎POLLOCK'S CHARACTERS & SCENES In OLIVER TWIST 6 Plates Characters 1 Set Piece 3 Wings and 13 Scenes. Total 23. With Book to the Above‎

‎London: Published by B. Pollock 73 Hoxton Street Hoxton n. d. 1st printing thus. Cf. Gimbel C35; Suzanette Catalogue E.35 showing this illustration; Suzanette TREASURES 30 also showing this image; VanderPoel B1091 all for the entire publication. Now housed in an archival mylar sleeve. Age-toning to paper. Small loss at two right corners. Very Good. Single sheet printed recto only. Wood engraved printing with 7 characters from Dickens' novel. Oriented horizontally: 6-5/8" x 8-1/4"

Item appears to be a leaftet-type advertiser for Pollock's work initially published by Redington and ostensibly the only juvenile dramatization of Dickens' work cf. Suzanette TREASURES. Estimated date of publication varies from authority to authority. VanderPoel gives c. 1839; Gimbel 1860 and the copy auctioned by Christies for the Self sale was described as "Post - 1876". We subscribe to this last as Redington's theatrical publishing firm was taken over by Benjamin Pollock in 1876 after Pollock married Redington's daughter. Pollock reissued many of Redington's plays with his own imprint as did many of the publishers until his death in 1937. Cf. Speaight G. History of the English Toy Theatre 1969 ed. p. 149 191-192. Published by B. Pollock, 73, Hoxton Street, Hoxton unknown books‎
