Philadelphia: Carey Lea and Blanchard 1838. xii 388p. engraved plates as called for inserted yellow stock two engraved title pages versions by each artist and printed title leaf with presswork credit verso; first American illustrated edition cased into modern half calf boards over homemade marbling. Textblock was printed on pulpy soft paperstock and is splotched with foxing throughout two original blanks fore and aft remain these adhered to marbled endsheets. Complete text; but misbound into this sequence: roman pagination is followed by pp.13-84 95-96 87-94 85-86 thereafter correct. There are also two torn leaves see 95/96 partly repaired and gutter of 386-87 where there is a gaping but not-at-risk crack. The modern perhaps mid-20thC casing is polished roan has five raised bands and no titling or any label and is unruled; a capable but ugly amateur production with one small corner-tip mouse-gnawed. The two Buss plates present facing pages 69 and 74 otherwise all plates in early states with page numbers as called for but no titles or imprints and the vignette title-page with the signboard reading "Veller" corrected to "Weller" in later issues. "Never was a book received with more rapturous enthusiasm than that which greeted the Pickwick Papers!" Allibone I:500. The first edition i.e. printing of the first volume is quite scarce having been issued in a printing of only 1500 copies. As the following volumes were published serially the first and second volumes were reprinted and one often finds mixed sets. As these volumes were set up and printed as the parts were received from London the text of four parts per volume a very sound case has been made most recently by Richard Loomis in his admirable catalogue of the McGuire collection that "it is.quite certain that four of the five Philadelphia volumes preceded the issuance of" the first British edition in book form. Charles Dickens's first novel was published by Chapman & Hall in monthly installments from March of 1836 until November 1837. The publisher had just started a series of amusing stories dealing with "Cockney sporting scenes". The series was built around the illustrations of Robert Seymour. Publication began on March 30th. Less than a month later on April 20th Robert Seymour committed suicide. Minor browning to a few leaves some spotting spine rebacked and rubbing to board covers. Bookplate of Thomas C. Ogden. 1837. By Boz. To which is added The Pantomime of Life by the same author. Philadelphia: Carey Lea & Blanchard 1837. Bound in full mottled calf with raised bands on the spine. First Edition so collected. In January 1837 Carey Lea & Blanchard published a "Library of Fiction" anthology volume titled THE TUGGS'S AT RAMSGATE "Together with Other Tales by Distinguished Writers" -- the first American appearance of that one Dickens sketch. A month later CL&B published a volume titled SKETCHES BY BOZ which consisted of the Dickens sketches contained in the Second Series of the British SKETCHES BY BOZ neither the UK nor the US edition included "The Tuggs's at Ramsgate". In June of the same year CL&B published this volume which combines "The Tuggs's at Ramsgate" into their earlier "Sketches by Boz" plus adds for the first time an additional Dickens sketch "The Pantomime of Life." Only 1000 copies were printed. Attractively rebound in this understated full-calf binding this is a close-to-fine copy damp-mark at the top of some leaves toward the rear. 1836. In: THE LIBRARY OF FICTION or Family Story Teller; consisting of Original Tales Essays and Sketches of Character. With Fourteen Illustrations in each volume. Vol. I & II. London: Chapman and Hall 1836/1837. Bound in contemporary half calf with marbled boards. First Edition in book form. Chapman & Hall's monthly fiction periodical "The Library of Fiction" began in April 1836 starting right off in that issue with the sketch "The Tuggs's at Ramsgate" by a writer using the pseudonym "Boz." The third June issue included another "A Little Talk about Spring and the Sweeps." When the Second Series of SKETCHES BY BOZ was published in December 1836 the latter tale was included re-titled "The First of May"; "The Tuggs's at Ramsgate" was the only one of Dickens's periodical sketches that did not appear in either volume of SKETCHES BY BOZ -- but it was added when SKETCHES BY BOZ was subsequently issued in serial parts from Nov 1837 through June 1839. These two volumes contain the monthly issues of this new periodical with preliminary leaves added for this book form the second volume issued in 1837 did not have any Dickens contributions but is included here. "The Tuggs's at Ramsgate" includes two plates by Seymour and "Spring and the Sweeps" has one by Buss; both illustrators would soon be involved with PICKWICK PAPERS. Other contributors include Edward Mayhew G.P.R. James Douglas Jerrold Mary Russell Mitford and the Countess of Blessington. This set is bound in contemporary half calf with gilt-paneled spine and black leather spine label and marbled paper-covered boards. Condition is very good minor edgewear of the marbled boards small worm-hole in the first few leaves of Vol II dampmark in the margfin of some plates. See Podeschi E121. unknown books

Partially unopened. A near fine set. <br/><br/> "The Library Edition came about largely because of the suggestion of Forster that while Dickens's works were available in volumes in the Cheap Edition and in reprints of the serial parts there was no high-quality edition that would appeal to the wealthy. Dickens eventually came round to the idea that an elegant edition could raise the stature of his writings. He faced a complication in that the rights to the works were divided between Chapman and Hall and Bradbury and Evans. Consequently the volumes contained the imprints of both publishers. With a dedication to Forster the Library Edition appeared in 22 volumes in 1858-9 at 7s 6d per volume. Titles included Pickwick Nickleby Chuzzlewit Old Curiosity Shop Reprinted Pieces Barnaby Rudge Hard Times Sketches by Boz Oliver Twist Dombey Copperfield Pictures from Italy Bleak House Little Dorrit and Christmas Books. The only illustrations were the frontispieces.<br/><br/>Between 1861 and 1874 this edition was reissued in 30 volumes with the addition of Tale of Two Cities Great Expectations Our Mutual Friend The Uncommercial Traveller A Child's History of England Christmas Stories and Drood. The reissue contained illustrations—the frontispieces plus additional illustrations by artists such as Marcus Stone John Leech and Clarkson Stanfield—and came to be known as the Illustrated Library Edition.Recognizing the continuing potential for sales of Dickens's works Chapman and Hall in 1873 published a prospectus for the Second Illustrated Library Edition containing they contended all the works the novelist wished to preserve.
