The original scheme was not successful and Dickens altered the format to make Master Humphrey's material a framework for his novels The Old Curiosity Shop nos.6-45 and Barnaby Rudge nos.46-88. MASTER HUMPHREY'S CLOCK was a weekly magazine Dickens intended as a flexible framework for his fiction and other writing in more frequently published units. Circulation fell quickly and a serial THE OLD CURIOSITY SHOP began in the fourth issue. BARNABY RUDGE followed and upon completion of that serial a total of 88 weekly parts Dickens returned to the monthly parts format. This is an fairly early copy of the three volume form with the most of the errors called for by Smith. Smith 6. Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi
London: Richard Bentley 1838. First Edition. Octavo. First issue with the last plate without a border edited by Boz. In two volumes 288 and 263pp. illustrated by George Cruikshank. Grimaldi a famous performing clown left his memoir in manuscript to his executer who attempted to have it published. The publisher bought the memoir edited by the executer but it needed too much work to be saleable. Dickens received from his publisher the opportunity to publish this work. Dickens signed an agreement and reworked the memoir adding his own flair. Dickens never had the opportunity to consult the manuscript as the executer sold it. Bound in contemporary 3/4 polished calf over marbled paper covered boards raised bands with compartments decorated in gilt dark brown and green morocco spine labels gilt all edge marbled with matching endpapers occasional spots of foxing to plates. 1838. Edited by "Boz." With Illustrations by George Cruikshank. In Two Volumes. London: Richard Bentley 1838. 36 pp undated Vol II ads. Original pink cloth embossed with flowers with gilt-decorated spines. First Edition of this early Dickens piece worked on after OLIVER TWIST and before NICHOLAS NICKLEBY -- during the time leading up to his break with the publisher Bentley. There has been considerable controversy regarding just how much Dickens contributed to this book. We quote from Johnson's biography: Bentley had acquired a life of the famous clown Grimaldi longÂÂwindedly and clumsily arranged by Thomas Egerton Wilks from autobiographical notes. He Bentley proposed that Dickens revise it. Dickens stipulated that his name should appear only as editor not as author and demanded a minimum of 300 pounds and a half share of the profits after deduction of expenses to which Bentley agreed. Dickens did no original writing except for an introductory and possibly a concluding chapter. His revisions mostly drastic abridgement he dictated to his father who vastly enjoyed his exalted office as amanuensis. This copy is in the primary binding of pink cloth embossed with a floral design with a clown in gilt holding the title on each spine. It also has the last plate in Vol II in the first state without the "grotesque" border that was added around Cruikshank's plate -- the border was removed for the subsequent 1846 one-volume edition. Condition is very good: as always the pink spines are a little faded and there is very slight shelfwear at the binding extremities there is also a discreet signature at the top of each title page; the original pale yellow endpapers are present and uncracked and foxing of the plates is generally limited to the two frontispieces. With the 36-page undated publisher's catalogue bound-in at the end of vol.2. and plate facing page 238 in the second state. In fine condition. Housed in two half morocco and chemise slipcases. After the legendary pantomime's death Dickens was invited by Richard Bentley to edit and improve Thomas Egerton Wilks's clumsily written Life of Grimaldi which had been based on the clown's own notes which Dickens did under his regular nom de plume "Boz". Octavo bound in full crimson crushed levant morocco by Baytun with morocco spine labels lettered in gilt gilt titles and tooling to the spin in six compartments within raised gilt bands double gilt rulings and fleuron cornerpieces to the panels gilt turn-ins and inner dentelles marbled endpapers all edges gilt tissue-guarded frontispiece portrait of Grimaldi with illustrations by George Cruikshank. From the library of Albert Hooper with his bookplate to the pastedown. In fine condition. An exquisite example. After the legendary pantomime's death Dickens was invited by Richard Bentley to edit and improve Thomas Egerton Wilks's clumsily written Life of Grimaldi which had been based on the clown's own notes which Dickens did under his regular nom de plume "Boz". As a child Dickens saw Grimaldi perform at the Star Theatre Rochester in 1820. The Memoirs of Joseph Grimaldi illustrated by George Cruikshank sold well to Dickens's surprise. G. 1877. A Farce in One Act. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company 1877. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black. First "Collectible" Edition of this play first performed in 1851. We say first "collectible" because there are only four known copies of the original 1851 pamphlet; supposedly a fifth from which Osgood printed this edition was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879. This is a volume in the publisher's "Vest Pocket Series" so named for its diminutive size a second Dickens "comic burletta" was published in this series the same year -- IS SHE HIS WIFE. This copy is terra-cotta in color; others are green without priority. It is a bright near-fine copy minor rubbing at the tips one small mark on the fore-edge of the leaves -- quite uncommon in this condition. Eckel pp 64-5. <br/><br/> hardcover books

Original vegetable vellum white boards gilt uncut. A hint of dust to white covers else a very fine copy of this slender volume. Dickens began writing this sketch in 1847 to raise additional money in a benefit for Leigh Hunt who was destitute at the time. A prior benefit had fallen short of its goal but before this piece could be finished Hunt received a pension that helped him considerably and the project was dropped. The American collector Lowell M. Palmer bought the original manuscript and had this volume privately printed from the manuscript; the rare book department of Dodd Mead sold copies for $10 each. The wrappers of both issues which are edgeworn and chipped have been carefully rebacked on the reverse with transparent tissue paper reinforced with a thin strip of the same on the spine and re-sewn. In addition the number for 1866 has the entire first and last pages of text reinforced with the transparent tissue. Some negligible foxing to text and soiling to wrappers of both issues with the 1866 number showing a couple of stains to the front wrapper. A total of 14 illustrations including a portrait of Dickens and a vignette title-page. Octavo. viii1-1902 pp. In the original six monthly parts as issued in blue paper wrappers. Housed in a green three-quarter leather pull-off case in a green cloth chemise. Wrappers show some general light wear butsome minor expert repair and are very good overall. The front wrap on Part 1 has a small ink spot near one edge and shows a bit more wear than the other wrappers. Almost all advertisements are present including the rare cork ad in Part 2 lacking only four pages nos. 7 - 10 of the "Edwin Drood Advertiser" in Part 3 and the eight-page Chapman & Hall catalog in Part 5. Another minor difference the eight-page Chapman & Hall catalog in Part 1 is not completely unpaginated; pages 2 and 3 are marked as such. Part 6 has the "Eighteenpence" slip pasted over the original price on front wrap as found in the earliest issues. Some plates show mild light foxing. Text leaves are clean. Edwin Drood with two brown morocco labels lettered in gilt John Jasper's Secret with one brown morocco label lettered in gilt. Gilt ruled board edges decorative turn-ins marbled end-papers top edge gilt. Joints a little rubbed but quite sound. A very attractive example housed together in a felt-lined fitted marbled board slipcase.<br/><br/>"When Dickens died on June 9 1870 he had completed only enough of his manuscript to make up six instalments leaving unfinished a work which had commanded the widest attention for its opening numbers and which promised to be one of his most effective and popular books. Although only three parts had been issued prior to his death publication of the work continued and on completion with Part 6 of all available material the vast army of readers was left high and dry as to ‘The Mystery.' The Author during the writing of the story never disclosed the ultimate development of his plot" Hatton and Cleaver.<br/><br/>John Jasper's Secret was the first of many attempts to solve The Mystery of Edwin Drood. Original blind-stamped green publisher's cloth with spines elaborately decorated in gilt. First "Cheap" Edition actually volume 2 of the first and most important collected works of Dickens with in this case a 4pp new introduction and a specially commissioned new frontispiece. Begun in 1847 with works already published Dickens added further titles as he went along. Despite being called "cheap" Dickens made sure that these volumes were just as high quality in texture and ornamentation as his first editions; there are 17 volumes in total all are rarely seen in fine condition. NEAR FINE spine a trifle browned as almost always with this olive-green cloth trifling wear to the extremities lower inner hinge just barely cracked bright gilt excellent eye appeal. .
